Book excerpt: John Greenleaf Whittier (December 17, 1807 - September 7, 1892) was an American Quaker poet and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Frequently listed as one of the fireside poets, he was influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whittier is remembered particularly for his anti-slavery writings, as well as his 1866 book Snow-Bound. Whittier was first introduced to poetry by a teacher. His sister sent his first poem, "The Exile's Departure", to the Newburyport Free Press without his permission, and its editor, William Lloyd Garrison, published it on June 8, 1826. Garrison as well as another local editor encouraged Whittier to attend the recently opened Haverhill Academy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edna St. Vincent Millay (February 22, 1892 - October 19, 1950) was an American lyrical poet and playwright. Encouraged to read the classics at home, she was too rebellious to make a success of formal education, but she won poetry prizes from an early age, including the Pulitzer Prize in 1923, and went on to use verse as a medium for her feminist activism. She also wrote verse-dramas and a highly-praised opera The King's Henchman. Her novels appeared under the name Nancy Boyd, and she refused lucrative offers to publish them under her own name. Millay was a prominent social figure of New York City's Greenwich Village, just as it was becoming known as a bohemian writer's colony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Frank Praeger's Sighs and Stray Gusts and Other Occasional Poems we find a poet weaving karmic webs of inclination and happenstance, extending to his readers a series of invitation to play, or walk awhile hand-in-hand, or stop a moment to wonder. The poems themselves emerge from Praeger's imagination and heart, from a place of deep compassion, and they travel far in place and time, displaying an astonishing range of emotion while still grounding themselves in the subtle distinctions of place, most notably Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula on the shores of Lake Superior. Here we find poems of both quiet dignity and of barbaric yawp, and both their vigor and their gentleness of attention, their assent into both fantasy and fond reminiscence, was a pleasure to immerse myself in. I paused only occasionally, as the speaker in Praeger's opening poem, to look "up from our foraging / half-hidden among bushes and dwarf trees." What a wonder to see the world anew. ̶ M. Bartley Seigel author of This Is What They Say and founding editor of the critically acclaimed literary magazine [PANK].

He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. Dryden was born in the village rectory of Aldwincle near Thrapston in Northamptonshire, where his maternal grandfather was rector of All Saints. After the Restoration, as Dryden quickly established himself as the leading poet and literary critic of his day, he transferred his allegiances to the new government. Along with Astraea Redux, Dryden welcomed the new regime with two more panegyrics: To His Sacred Majesty: A Panegyric on his Coronation (1662) and To My Lord Chancellor (1662).
