Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Observations on the Hygiene of the Army in India: Including Remarks on the Ventilation and Conservancy of Indian Prisons; With a Chapter on Prison Management The sanitary condition of the British Army in India has of late been the subject of anxious inquiry. It is hoped that the practical suggestions made in this treatise may prove of use at the present time. It has not been my object to enter into any elaborate discussion on the composition of foul air and impure water. Our knowledge of these, particularly the former, is, in some respects, involved in considerable obscurity; and many of the arguments relating to the gases, vapours, and other substances in which are supposed to lie their peculiar poisonous qualities, are purely hypothetical. But, however various the opinions regarding the particular gases or vapours in impure air which generate certain diseases, and however difficult it may be to exactly define its true character, all are agreed as to its generally baneful influence on the human constitution, and the healthful, invigorating effect of living in a pure atmosphere. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Florence Nightingale: An Introduction to Her Life and Family introduces the Collected Works by giving an overview of Nightingale’s life and the faith that guided it and by outlining the main social reform concerns on which she worked from her “call to service’’ at age sixteen to old age. This volume reports correspondence (selected from the thousands of surviving letters) with her mother, father and sister and a wide extended family. There is material on Nightingale’s “domestic arrangements,’’ from recipes, cat care and relations with servants to her contributions to charities, church and social reform causes. Much new and original material comes to light, and a remarkably different portrait of Nightingale, one with a more nuanced view of her family relationships, emerges. The Series In the Collected Works of Florence Nightingale all the surviving writing of Florence Nightingale will be published, much of it for the first time. Known as the heroine of the Crimean War and the major founder of the modern profession of nursing, Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) will be revealed also as a scholar, theorist and social reformer of enormous scope and importance. Original material has been obtained from over 150 archives and private collections worldwide. This abundance of material will be reflected in the series, revealing a significant amount of new material on her philosophy, theology and personal spiritual journey, as well as on her vision of a public health care system, her activism to achieve the difficult early steps of nursing for the sick poor in workhouse infirmaries and her views on health promotion and women’s control over midwifery. Nightingale’s more than forty years of work for public health in India, particularly in famine prevention and for broader social reform, will be reported in detail. The Collected Works of Florence Nightingale demonstrates Nightingale’s astute use of the political process and reports on her extensive correspondence with royalty, viceroys, cabinet ministers and international leaders, including such notables as Queen Victoria and W. E. Gladstone. Much new material on Nightingale’s family is reported, including some that will challenge her standard portrayal in the secondary literature. Sixteen printed volumes are scheduled and will record her enormous and largely unpublished correspondence, previously published books, articles and pamphlets, many of which have long been out of print. There will be full publication in electronic form, permitting readers to easily pursue their particular interests. Extensive databases, notably a chronology and a names index, will also be published in electronic form, again permitting convenient access to persons interested not only in Nightingale but in other figures of the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the world of women who married, or dealt with British soldiers below the rank of officer during the nineteenth century, including fiancées, wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters, as well as the prostitutes they consorted with. It examines women's experiences over the time cycle of a soldier's service. It considers women's finances, how they struggled to make ends meet and how they appealed to the government for support, including in widowhood and after a soldier's service had been completed. It discusses how soldiers' women were viewed in the press, in literature and in society more widely, highlighting in particular issues concerning morality and independence, and outlines how the Crimean War and its aftermath brought about extensive army reforms and also a sharp revision of the reputation of soldiers' wives. The book includes an exploration of soldiers' relations with prostitutes and how prostitutes were regulated, and a consideration of the impact on soldiers' wives of physical arrangements such as barracks, and overall provides much insight into the nature of plebeian life in the nineteenth century. The women portrayed often emerge as exceptionally resolute, independent and canny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of Florence Nightingale is a two volumes biography of a famous founder of modern nursing, written by English man of letters Sir Edward Tyas Cook. Florence Nightingale was an English social reformer, statistician and the founder of modern nursing. Nightingale came to prominence while serving as a manager and trainer of nurses during the Crimean War, in which she organized care for wounded soldiers at Constantinople. She gave nursing a favorable reputation and became an icon of Victorian culture, especially in the persona of "The Lady with the Lamp" making rounds of wounded soldiers at night. The quality of Cook's biography is that it draws extensively from Miss Nightingale's own correspondence and presents as closely as it can a person she was. First volume covers the period from 1820 to 1861, and second volume continues to follow events in her life from 1862 to 1910.
