Download or read book Changes in the Sheep Industry in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. sheep industry is complex, multifaceted, and rooted in history and tradition. The dominant feature of sheep production in the United States, and, thus, the focus of much producer and policy concern, has been the steady decline in sheep and lamb inventories since the mid-1940s. Although often described as "an industry in decline," this report concludes that a better description of the current U.S. sheep industry is "an industry in transition."
Book Synopsis Landscapes of Wool Production by : Jennifer Wilhelmina Hoover

Book excerpt: Various textile producers are beginning to push back against trends of "fast fashion" by positioning their work as "slow" and "local." Such projects rest on the assumption of intrinsic connections between fiber and the place where it was grown, which are palpable in the textures of clothing fashioned from those fibers. In this research, I set out to examine links between fiber and place in wool production through participant observation as a novice wool classer in California. Drawing on methods and models from Actor-Network Theory and other "new materialist" approaches, I use the physical structures of wool as a metaphorical framework through which to understand the social dynamics of textile production, distribution, and consumption. Close attention to the material and social characteristics of wool reveals the instability of binaries such as local/global, natural/manufactured, and material/social. Following an examination of mutually constitutive relationships between pastoral landscapes, sheep, and shepherds, I propose that wool functions as the material memory of the rangeland ecosystem. That memory is read and transformed into a potential economic future by the wool classer, who evaluates and sorts fleeces. Finally, I conclude that contradictions within and between various criteria by which wool is valued result in friction and tension which paradoxically hold the industry together, even as it seems they should tear it apart.
