Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical perspective of the image of the cross as one of life instead of death What would Christianity be like if the principle of a new creation were its guiding idea, and the Cross as Life-Giving Tree its central image? After exploring this principle’s deep roots in tradition, worship, and art, this book proposes Hildegard of Bingen’s concept of virditas—“green-ness”—as a way to know it in daily life. It claims the Cross as healer of division, both among followers of Jesus and among the nations. Holy Cross, Life-Giving Tree is illustrated with Cross images from throughout the Christian world and compares eastern Christian liturgies of the Cross with those of the west. It recounts the origins of the early Jerusalem cult of the Cross, and invites readers to meditate on Scripture passages used by ancient artists. Each of its six chapters ends with reflection questions for going deeper. Holy Cross, Life-Giving Tree is designed for use by study groups or by individuals.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Herity is one of the leading archaeologists in the Early Christian period in Ireland. These papers document a sustained interest in the early development of Irish Christian monasteries and hermitages between the years 400 and 700. Major concerns include the form and layout, buildings and other monuments of these early foundations, particularly those on islands in the Atlantic, most of which were founded before 600. Examination of their cross-carved slabs and pillars has led to a study of the forms of the Tomb of the Founder Saint and the characteristic pilgrimage round known in Irish as an Turas and still performed today. The development of ideas based on the pioneer work of Francoise Henry is documented in two papers on Fechin's hermitage at Ardoilean or High Island off the Galway coast in 1977 and 1990. Recent papers are also concerned with the forms of the Chi-rho and other early crosses in the insular context.

Book excerpt: "Evidence found in Classical and Medieval sources suggests important contacts between south-west France and Ireland, both commercial and cultural, long before the modern period." "Far from being an impediment to cultural and commercial relations, the Atlantic Ocean was seen as an internal Celtic sea linking the people of Britain, Ireland, Gaul and Spain. This collection of essays (nine in French; six in English) analyses the evidence of the historical and socio-cultural relations between Ireland and the Aquitaine region in the light of modern research in the fields of archaeology, history, folklore, linguistics and literature. It covers from the sixth to the fourteenth century and the geographical area of Ireland, the Irish foundations in the British Isles and the province of Aquitaine."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
