Download or read book Internet Law written by Chris Reed and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-07 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common fallacy regarding cyberspace is that the Internet is a new jurisdiction, in which none of the existing rules and regulations apply. However, all the actors involved in an Internet transaction live in one or more existing jurisdictions, so rather than being unregulated, the Internet is arguably highly regulated. Worse, much of this law and regulation is contradictory and difficult, or impossible, to comply with. This 2004 book takes a global view of the fundamental legal issues raised by the advent of the Internet as an international communications mechanism. Legal and other materials are integrated to support the discussion of how technological, economic and political factors are shaping the law governing the Internet. Global trends in legal issues are addressed and the effectiveness of potential mechanisms for legal change that are applicable to Internet law are also examined. Of interest to students and practitioners in computer and electronic commerce law.

It features opening statements by Congressman Steven H. Schiff, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Basic Research, Congresswoman Constance A. Morella, chairman of the House Subcommittee on Technology, as well as Congressmen Pete Geren and Curt Weldon. Testimony is included from two panels of witnesses. The first includes: (1) Anthony M. Rutkowski, Executive Director of the Internet Society; (2) Ann Duvall, President of Surf-Watch Software, Inc.; and (3) Steven Heaton, General Counsel and Secretary of Compuserve; all of whom offer background information on the nature and structure of the Internet and an introduction to screening software and other technologies that can assist parents in restricting access to obscene material on the Internet. The second panel includes: (1) Mike Geraghty; (2) Kevin Manson; and (3) Lee Hollander; who discuss the law enforcement perspective--the extent to which police and courts can restrict the activities of the purveyors of cyberporn, problematic issues in attempting legal regulation of the dissemination of information, and outlets for cyberporn-related grievances. Book Synopsis Broadcast and Internet Indecency by : Jeremy Lipschultz
Download or read book Broadcast and Internet Indecency written by Jeremy Lipschultz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-02-14 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indecency--arguably among the most provocative and incendiary issues in today's media--is speech at the edge of social tolerance. This timely volume examines broadcast and Internet indecency from legal and social perspectives, utilizing current cases and well-publicized examples. In exploring the issues associated with this highly controversial area, author Jeremy Harris Lipschultz makes headway toward an understanding of how indecency, as communication on the fringes of social norms, functions in defining free expression through specific types of speech. He contrasts conceptualizations of indecency and obscenity, synthesizes case law and social research, and develops theoretical generalizations for future research and study. His work provides a comprehensive examination of broadcast and Internet indecency issues and cases that serve to test generalizations about freedom of expression and one's ability to define free speech.

Book Synopsis Global Perspectives on Social Issues by : Richard Procida
Download or read book Global Perspectives on Social Issues written by Richard Procida and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2003 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pornography is a volatile issue in the United States_depending on the source of opinion, it can be viewed as either demeaning or empowering. Global Perspectives on Social Issues: Pornography asks whether the issue is similarly contentious around the world. Richard Procida and Rita Simon collect in this volume a wealth of data on laws, regulations, and public opinion regarding pornography in a wide sample of countries in both the West and the East. The authors pose and discuss the following questions: Is censorship of pornography correlated with authoritarianism? Does the censorship of pornography lead to the censorship of other more valuable speech, such as political or artistic speech? How much of a factor is pornography in violence against women and the sexual abuse of children? Is the United States more, or less, prudish than other nations around the world, particularly other Western democratic nations? The book reveals a variety of approaches to the treatment of pornography, providing sociologists, legal scholars, and women's rights activists with a valuable reference tool.

Book Synopsis United States Code by : United States
Download or read book United States Code written by United States and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 1146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.
