Book Synopsis The Music of Lennox Berkeley by : Peter Dickinson
Download or read book The Music of Lennox Berkeley written by Peter Dickinson and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fully revised edition of Peter Dickinson's acclaimed study of one of the great British composers of the twentieth century. Sir Lennox Berkeley (1903-1989) was one of the leading British composers of the mid-twentieth century and his music has unique qualities which will ensure its survival far beyond transient fashions. Peter Dickinson knew Berkeley for more than thirty years and this much enlarged book places the composer in the context of his extended study with Nadia Boulanger, his friendship with Britten, and the achievement of an independent voice of remarkable distinction. The new book now benefits from interviews with Lady Berkeley, Michael Berkeley, Julian Bream, Colin Horsley, Sir John Manduell, Nicholas Maw, Malcolm Williamson and the late Basil Douglas, Desmond Shawe-Taylor and Norman del Mar. There are photographs, a full list of works, bibliographies and over a hundred musical examples. PETER DICKINSON is Head of Music at the Institute of United States Studies at the University of London and an Emeritus Professor of the Universities of Keele and London.

Book Synopsis The Impact of the British Oboist Léon Goossens by : Jonathan Tobutt
Download or read book The Impact of the British Oboist Léon Goossens written by Jonathan Tobutt and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-28 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of Léon Goossens’ musical life, the author reassesses the current limited and fragmented perspectives of Léon’s contribution to British oboe playing through his interpretative and performance strategies, his orchestral and solo careers, the people who influenced and were influenced by him, his character as reported by those who studied and worked with him and, significantly, his pivotal role as a catalyst for new compositions that created a considerable library of British oboe music addressing a paucity in the repertoire. To place Léon’s impact in the context of the oboe’s history in Britain, factors concerning the influence of the French School on the British style of oboe playing are explored, as well as the entrenched polarised attitudes towards the instrument and a solo compositional vacuum prevalent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that ultimately provided a platform for a restoration of the instrument’s status.

Almost all of Berkely's later writings follow, and then there are four interviews he gave in the 1970s. Download or read book Marcel Tabuteau written by Laila Storch and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laila Storch is a world-renowned oboist in her own right, but her book honors Marcel Tabuteau, one of the greatest figures in twentieth-century music. Tabuteau studied the oboe from an early age at the Paris Conservatoire and was brought to the United States in 1905, by Walter Damrosch, to play with the New York Symphony Orchestra. Although this posed a problem for the national musicians' union, he was ultimately allowed to stay, and the rest, as they say, is history. Eventually moving to Philadelphia, Tabuteau played in the Philadelphia Orchestra and taught at the Curtis Institute of Music, ultimately revamping the oboe world with his performance, pedagogical, and reed-making techniques. In 1941, Storch auditioned for Tabuteau at the Curtis Institute, but was rejected because of her gender. After much persistence and several cross-country bus trips, she was eventually accepted and began a life of study with Tabuteau. Blending archival research with personal anecdotes, and including access to rare recordings of Tabuteau and Waldemar Wolsing, Storch tells a remarkable story in an engaging style.
