Book Synopsis Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest by : Sylvie Gauthier
Download or read book Ecosystem Management in the Boreal Forest written by Sylvie Gauthier and published by PUQ. This book was released on 2009 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Ecosystem Management. A management approach that aims to maintain healthy and resilient forest ecosystems by focusing on a reduction of differences between natural and managed landscapes to ensure long-term maintenance of ecosystem functions and thereby retain the social and economic benefits they provide to society. That is the definition of forest ecosystem management proposed in this book, which provides a summary of key ecological concepts supporting this approach. The book includes a review of major disturbance regimes that shape the natural dynamics of the boreal forest and gives examples from different Canadian boreal regions. Several projects implementing the forest ecosystem management approach are presented to illustrate the challenges created by current forestry practices and the solutions that this new approach can provide. In short, knowledge and understanding of forest dynamics can serve as a guide for forest management. Planning interventions based on natural dynamics can facilitate reconciliation between forest harvesting needs and the interests of other forest users.

Book Synopsis An Assessment of Tree, Snag and Downed Wood Residuals in Boreal Fires in Relation to Ontario's Policy Directions for Emulating Natural Forest Disturbance by : Ajith Perera
Download or read book An Assessment of Tree, Snag and Downed Wood Residuals in Boreal Fires in Relation to Ontario's Policy Directions for Emulating Natural Forest Disturbance written by Ajith Perera and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to residual tree mortality, the complement of snag and downed wood residuals increased in time. After three years, abundance of large diameter residual trees was very low, and congruent with directions provided in the NDPE guide for retaining residual trees post-harvest. Local fire intensity appeared to be the most important global determinant of occurrence of residual trees, but with an inverse relationship. Our results do not support the hypotheses that pre-burn forest cover and site conditions are reliable global predictors of residual tree occurrence."--Abstract

Book Synopsis A Review of Published Knowledge on Post-fire Residuals Relevant to Ontario's Policy Directions for Emulating Natural Disturbance by : Ajith H. Perera
Download or read book A Review of Published Knowledge on Post-fire Residuals Relevant to Ontario's Policy Directions for Emulating Natural Disturbance written by Ajith H. Perera and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire intensity within forest fires varies as weather and site conditions change, leaving live forest patches, and individual trees, as well as dead structure as standing trees and downed stems. Such remnant structure from pre-burn forests are collectively known as post-fire residuals. This review of the literature is focused on establishing the state of knowledge on post-fire residuals as relevant to directions in Ontario's Forest management guide for natural disturbance pattern emulation (NDPE). It covers information reported for boreal North America, captured from reports that are published and universally accessible. The report includes a description of the methodological steps followed in searching, reviewing, and synthesizing literature; definitions and descriptions of post-fire residuals; abundance and variability of specific types of post-fire residual structure; and associations of post-fire residual structure with forest cover, site conditions, and fire behaviour. It also identifies knowledge gaps and uncertainties about aspects of post-fire residual structure that are relevant to the NDPE guide directions.--Includes text from document.
Book Synopsis Animal production and natural resources utilisation in the Mediterranean mountain areas by : A. Georgoudis
Download or read book Animal production and natural resources utilisation in the Mediterranean mountain areas written by A. Georgoudis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean inhabitants depend on natural resources for their livelihoods. Livestock production and forestry are key sources of income yet are carried out under harsh conditions such as limited land resources, marginal agricultural conditions, isolation, and scant equipment and infrastructure. Livestock is of particular importance in mountain production systems as they convert plant biomass into useful products for humans such as milk, meat and draught power. These products are key to the regions' sustainability. The main topics discussed in this book are: Human geography of Mediterranean mountain territories. Livestock production and natural resources. Improving the efficiency of livestock systems in Mediterranean mountain areas. Applications of new technologies for environmentally sound management of livestock and natural resources. The role livestock plays in rural development and in safeguarding natural resources.
