Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obedience to Sonship Call examines the relationship of Ruth and Naomi. The story of Ruth clearly demonstrates the power of obedience and its impact upon our lives in shaping the inner man. If the inner man is truly submissive to the call of the Lord through our spiritual parents, we can reach our spiritual destiny. We can get where God expects us to be. Ruth’s life and Naomi had a spiritual significance or importance in the spiritual realm, which is in line with what most of us are going through in our daily lives. Just to mention a few issues in relation to spiritual sonship call: obedience, submission, loyalty, humility, and so forth have a greater impact in our lives today. Sonship call prepares our hearts to desire that which God has set for our lives. Through listening and paying attention to the words of wisdom given by our spiritual parents in the Lord, we can gain access to our destiny. Sonship call helps us to stay connected to our spiritual parents so that we can receive our blessings from the Lord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has often been observed that Jesus’ filial obedience is an important Matthean theme. In this work the author argues that the articulation of Jesus as Son of God in Matthew is significantly influenced by the Deuteronomic concept of obedient sonship. After noting the complexities of Matthew’s use of Scripture – including the subtle ways he engages texts – Deuteronomy’s pervasive influence in ancient Judaism and Christianity is considered. It is argued that the requirement of Israel’s covenantal obedience as God’s son(s) is a major concern in Deuteronomy, as well as in other Jewish and Christian texts that appear to echo Deuteronomy. Indeed, it is argued that a pattern can be detected in which the sonship of Israel is invoked either to summon Israel to obedience, or to rebuke the nation for disobedience. The author concludes that the necessity of Israel’s obedient sonship is an important part of Matthew’s interpretive milieu that derives ultimately from Deuteronomy, and our understanding of Matthean Christology is greatly enhanced when viewed in this context. This study may further help us understand why Matthew’s concern with obedient sonship applies not only to Jesus uniquely, but also to the early Christian community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its beginnings in the early 1960s the Charismatic Movement has been at its most visible and influential in the sphere of public worship. This book is the first major study of charismatic worship as it is encountered in Church of England parishes. Having traced the historical development of the Charismatic Movement in the Church of England, the book explores the public worship of six selected case study churches. By focusing on patterns of liturgical order, congregational singing, and Òprayer ministry, various aspects of worship are discussed. These include leadership, use of music and song, transformation of people and place, and the influence of cultural trends in notions of intimacy and characteristics of live performance (presence, spontaneity, and visibility). The concluding section offers a theological evaluation and investigates charismatic worship from a trinitarian perspective.

Book excerpt: A constructive study of Trinitarian theology that aims to clarify our knowledge of the triune God by rightly ordering the theological language we use to praise him. The Triune God reaches its conclusions about how this doctrine should be handled on the basis of the way the Trinity was revealed. As such, theologian Fred Sanders: Invites a doxological invitation to the reader to contemplate the mystery of the Trinity. Establishes the biblical exposition and draws the doctrinal implications from it. Offers dogmatic principles for Trinitarian exegesis. Though Sanders does interact with major voices from the history of doctrine—and his arguments are indebted to and informed by the great tradition of Trinitarianism—he is clear throughout that Trinitarianism is a gift of revelation before it is an achievement of the church. The most patristic way to proceed toward a well-ordered doctrine of the Trinity is, after all, to study Scripture. -ABOUT THE SERIES- New Studies in Dogmatics seeks to retrieve the riches of Christian doctrine for the sake of contemporary theological renewal. Following in the tradition of G. C. Berkouwer's Studies in Dogmatics, this series provides thoughtful, concise, and readable treatments of major theological topics, expressing the biblical, creedal, and confessional shape of Christian doctrine for a contemporary evangelical audience. The editors and contributors share a common conviction that the way forward in constructive systematic theology lies in building upon the foundations laid in the church's historic understanding of the Word of God as professed in its creeds, councils, and confessions, and by its most trusted teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We cannot know Jesus without knowing his story. And that story began long before Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The Gospels tell us clearly that Jesus himself, along with his earliest followers, understood who he was and what he came to do in the light of the story of Israel as told in the pages of the Old Testament. Like them, we too will find that our own understanding of both Jesus and the Old Testament is transformed as we see each in the light of the other. Engaging with the Scriptures, Christopher J. H. Wright uncovers Jesus’ self- understanding as Son of Man and Son of God, following the path and fulfilling the call that God had placed before Israel. Through this we discover that the deeper we go into understanding the Old Testament, the closer we come to the heart of Jesus. In this revised and updated second edition Wright digs deeper into the Old Testament revealing the God whom Jesus embodied. Each chapter is followed with questions and exercises, which can be used either in personal study or in group discussion.

Book excerpt: At the heart of all ecumenical dialogue between Catholics and Evangelicals is their fundamental agreement on Christology and a common understanding and confession of the lordship of Jesus Christ as the unique Savior of the human race. Infinity Dwindled to Infancy provides a broad survey of doctrinal and historical issues at play in Christology. Drawing from a wide range of sources contemporary New Testament scholarship and patristic Christology, key medieval theologians, major Protestant voices, Catholic theologians, and recent magisterial statements from Vatican II Edward T. Oakes presents two millennia of thinking on one of the great paradoxes at the heart of Christian faith: an infinite God who is finite man . . . in short, Infinity dwindled to infancy.
