When Fish was invited to create 100 new works of art in honor of City Hall's 100th birthday, he moved his studio into a City Hall office to become the city's first-ever artist in residence. This celebratory book gathers all 100 pieces of artwork—each rendered in his signature whimsical style—featuring everything from the city's famous architecture and treasured local landmarks to portraits of colorful local residents in a gallery of "unofficial mayors." Together these images form an energetic, visual tour de force showcasing San Francisco's vivacious spirit and vibrant history.

Book excerpt: In the early 1970's, the Federal Government undertook to investigate corruption penetrating the entire criminal justice system in New York, particularly the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) of the narcotics division of the New York Police Department. Young and enthusiastic detective Robert Leuci was chosen by federal prosecutors Rudolph Guliani, Maurice Nadjari, and Tom Puccio to probe this world of corruption as an undercover agent. Leuci had enjoyed a swift rise from patrolman to the rank of detective. He knew Frank Serpico and while he was sympathetic with Serpico he felt the corruption filtered down. The police were at the bottom of this food chain. This is the true story. Leuci helped put together corruption cases against lawyers, bail bondsmen, mob figures and some of his own. Leuci seemed perfectly suited to his special job. His cover was deep with only the Police Commissioner aware of his dual role.As team leader within the SIU, Leuci had access to all of the players in criminal justice from judges down. He walked a tightrope that made his life a nightmare. His life was in jeopardy from both sides.

Book excerpt: In this landmark work, Jed Perl captures the excitement of a generation of legendary artists–Jackson Pollack, Joseph Cornell, Robert Rauschenberg, and Ellsworth Kelly among them–who came to New York, mingled in its lofts and bars, and revolutionized American art. In a continuously arresting narrative, Perl also portrays such less well known figures as the galvanic teacher Hans Hofmann, the lyric expressionist Joan Mitchell, and the adventuresome realist Fairfield Porter, as well the writers, critics, and patrons who rounded out the artists’world. Brilliantly describing the intellectual crosscurrents of the time as well as the genius of dozens of artists, New Art City is indispensable for lovers of modern art and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book is judgment; the style symbolism. God is revealed as the Almighty, the Eternal, the Judge of all the earth. Christ appears exercising His judicial functions, first in the house of God, and afterwards among the nations. The Holy Ghost is seen, not as the "one Spirit," but in His perfect diversity of action in connection with the government of God. Here, as in all Scripture, the person of Christ is the central figure, the glory of Christ the central object. But next to the person and glory of Christ the kingdom and the Church occupy the most prominent place. The world is, however, throughout regarded as a scene of judgment. Hence it is the judgments, and not the blessings, of the earthly kingdom that are here recorded. So, too, the Church on earth is looked upon, not in its privileges, but in its responsibilities, as the house of God, at which judgment must begin. On the other hand, the heavenly glories of the Church, and the heavenly side of the kingdom, about which the Old Testament is silent are here blessedly unfolded. The style of the book is largely symbolic, and in this it resembles the prophecies of Daniel. But while in Daniel the symbols are generally explained, in this book their interpretation is usually left to be gathered from other portions of Scripture. Many other features, both in the subject and the style, require notice; but these will be more conveniently examined as they arise than in any preliminary remarks. The book naturally divides itself into three parts. At the close of the first chapter John is told to "write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be after these." "The things which thou hast seen" are not so much a separate division as an introduction to "the things which are." But "the things which shall be after these" comprise two distinct classes: those which precede, and those which accompany or follow, the coming and kingdom of Christ. The three divisions of the book are therefore, First. "The things which are," described in the addresses to the seven churches, and preceded by the introductory vision; Second. The judgments falling on the earth before the Lord's advent from heaven; and, Third. The coming and reign of Christ, ending with the judgment of the dead before the great white throne, and leading on to the eternal state in which God is all in all.

Book excerpt: Italo Calvino's beloved, intricately crafted novel about an Emperor's travels—a brilliant journey across far-off places and distant memory. “Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.” In a garden sit the aged Kublai Khan and the young Marco Polo—Mongol emperor and Venetian traveler. Kublai Khan has sensed the end of his empire coming soon. Marco Polo diverts his host with stories of the cities he has seen in his travels around the empire: cities and memory, cities and desire, cities and designs, cities and the dead, cities and the sky, trading cities, hidden cities. As Marco Polo unspools his tales, the emperor detects these fantastic places are more than they appear.
