The modern village is well known for its picturesque Argyle Park and flourishing downtown, but it was once revered as a vacation resort destination for those near and far. The community has evolved from decades of residents, visitors, and experiences that have contributed to and created the history of Babylon village, one of the oldest established communities on the South Shore of Long Island.

Book excerpt: Compelling evidence is given to show that the sudden destruction of the great city "Babylon" -portrayed in the Bible's book of Revelation as a seductive prostitute -is a veiled prophecy of the impending annihilation of modern-day New York City. As a combination of Bible study and personal testimony, this book recounts the author's seemingly mundane personal experience and follow-up events that triggered this alarming view over fifty-five years ago. The investigation uncovers solid scriptural evidence that "Babylon" symbolizes a real physical city, and that New York City uniquely matches the identifying clues. A chapter is devoted to the question-among all the cities of the world-why would New York City be singled out for destruction? Additionally, an analysis of historical and contemporary world events, viewed in the light of relevant Old and New Testament Bible prophecies, is used to formulate an end-time scenario that could lead to the shocking destruction of New York City. The scenario identifies three presently existing powers that will likely form the unprecedented confederacy that will eventually carry out the deadly attack. Readers are invited to evaluate the evidence and draw their own conclusions. Regardless of a reader's conclusion, the study should produce increased assurance that our Heavenly Father, who sacrificed his divine Son so that all might have eternal life, sees the end from the beginning and still has everything in His ultimate control. WILLIAM A. (Bo) GRISSOM holds the PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Cincinnati and professor emeritus status at Central State University in southwestern Ohio, where he served as professor for thirty years before retiring in 2006. Dr. Grissom was a licensed professional engineer for 35 years and gained industrial experience with IBM, GE, NASA Lewis, Baldwin Piano Company, and Chrysler Corporation. This is his second book following his retirement from engineering education. His first book entitled, Hath God Said ... Remember the Sabbath Day? - the Gospel in Both Testaments, addresses conflicting doctrinal views advocated by major Christian factions. Both books apply the same logical, detailed approach required in the field of engineering to the study of the Bible. Dr. Grissom and his wife, Sandi, reside in Xenia, Ohio and have been blessed with six grown children.

Book excerpt: Does it not seems odd to you that America, The richest and the most powerful country today, The only country who has liberated other nations from evil. The greatest evangelical nation on the earth) IS NOT EVEN MENTIONED IN THE BIBLE? As it is God's will that you are here now, witnessing the unmasking of evil. It is the will of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that you and your family see this and be safe from all the wrong doings of our time. Just as the Holy Word says: "I have told you these things, so that in me, you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart, I have overcome the world." John chapter 16 verses 33. I made an astonishing discovery that connected all the hidden clues. You must understand, the holy texts of the Bible are full of metaphors and symbolism. Because the prophets tried to describe things that exist in the future using words available in their time. So when the profits saw airplanes in their visions, the description would be: "Mount up to heaven" referring to the air travel and the air force... Just like: "It will ascend above the heights of the clouds; it will be like the most high" Is clearly a metaphor for reaching space. The fact that both of these metaphors refer to a nation known to Bible scholars as Babylon or "Mystery Babylon" is no coincidence... Mystery Babylon is an end time’s nation... 12 Mystery Babylon Final Devastating Impact How else would it be to have an Air Force and reach space? And John the Apostle in the Book of Revelation describes it in great detail. And by the prophets Jeremiah and Isaiah) Holy men who have heard the word of God carefully put in writing to see our lost souls when the tribulation day comes. "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah chapter 41 verses 10...Through the account of John the Apostle in the book of revelation and through the writings of the prophets and Isaiah. Babylon is hailed as a "Queen among the nations" and the lady of kingdoms." (Isaiah 47:5,7); It is the youngest and only superpower in the world, Jeremiah 47, Revelations 18), According to the Apostles and the prophets, Babylon "reigneth over the kings of the earth"(Rev17: 18). It was "The praise of the entire earth" and an astonishment among the nations" (Jeremiah 51.47). Babylon is a democracy weighed down by its massive Government. "Thou art wearied in the Multitude of thy counsels." Isaiah (47:13) Babylon destroys her own land, with pollution and waste: "Because thou hast destroyed thy land" (Isa14: 20) "I have polluted my inheritance and given them into thy hand" (Isaiah 47:6). Ask yourself this: How could an early day prophet know about pollution since there was no such thing in ancient times? The answer may already be obvious.

It is forbidden to go to any of the Dead Places except to search for metal and then he who touches the metal must be a priest or the son of a priest. Afterwards, both the man and the metal must be purified. These are the rules and the laws; they are well made. It is forbidden to cross the great river and look upon the place that was the Place of the Gods-this is most strictly forbidden. We do not even say its name though we know its name. It is there that spirits live, and demons-it is there that there are the ashes of the Great Burning. These things are forbidden- they have been forbidden since the beginning of time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Babylon by the Sea focuses on a seaside community that, once rich in salt marshes, attracted many of the area's first settlers. Originally called Sumpawam, it was purchased from Native Americans in 1670. The township was formed from South Huntington and named Babylon in 1802 by Mrs. Conklin, a staunch advocate of the Bible. Babylon includes the villages of Lindenhurst and Amityville, and the hamlets of North and West Babylon, Copaigue, Deer Park, Farmingdale, and Wyandanch. This vibrant community evolved from a humble beginning of farming, fishing, and whaling into an attractive resort community. The area was unknown until the nearby barrier beach, Fire Island, gained prominence as a summer resort. The South Shore line of the Long Island Railroad gave the seaside locality impetus when the train reached Babylon in 1867. Hotels and boardinghouses sprang up around town and beside the sea. Among the pleasure seekers were many wealthy New Yorkers who came in quest of the invigorating air and relaxation outside the city. The trip from New York took just over an hour; a trolley would meet the visitors and transport them to the Great South Bay. For many years, the South Shore Railroad was the only electrified train, and Babylon became the point of convergence for travelers bent on speed. The village also witnessed the birth of radio and wireless communication when Marconi contacted ships at sea from Babylon.

The events in the book are seen through the eyes of pre-teen boys in living on Long Island, New York in the late 1930s and early 40s. It is not so much a tale of survival as it is about the resiliency of youth and how they found ways not only to cope with but to and try to understand the horrific events of December 1941 and the days and years after.

In the days leading up to the funeral and infamous after-party, Aubrey slips seamlessly between her past and present. Memories of friendship tangle with painful new encounters, while underneath it all Aubrey feels the rush of something closing in, something she can no longer run from. And when the past and present collide in one devastating night, nothing will be the same again.

Book excerpt: Bringing together the research of internationally renowned scholars, Assyria to Iberia at the Dawn of the Classical Age contributes significantly to our understanding of the epoch-making artistic and cultural exchanges that took place across the Near East and Mediterranean in the early first millennium B.C. This was the world of Odysseus, in which seafaring Phoenician merchants charted new nautical trade routes and established prosperous trading posts and colonies on the shores of three continents; of kings Midas and Croesus, legendary for their wealth; and of the Hebrew Bible, whose stories are brought vividly to life by archaeological discoveries. Objects drawn from collections in the Middle East, Europe, North Africa, and the United States, reproduced here in sumptuous detail, reflect the cultural encounters of diverse populations interacting through trade, travel, and migration as well as war and displacement. Together, they tell a compelling story of the origins and development of Western artistic traditions that trace their roots to the ancient Near East and across the Mediterranean world. Among the masterpieces brought together in this volume are stone reliefs that adorned the majestic palaces of ancient Assyria; expertly crafted Phonecian and Syrian bronzes and worked ivories that were stored in the treasuries of Assyria and deposited in tombs and sanctuaries in regions far to the west; and lavish personal adornments and other luxury goods, some imported and others inspired by Near Eastern craftsmanship. Accompanying texts by leading scholars position each object in cultural and historical context, weaving a narrative of crisis and conquest, worship and warfare, and epic and empire that spans both continents and millennia. Writing another chapter in the story begun in Art of the First Cities (2003) and Beyond Babylon (2008), Assyria to Iberia offers a comprehensive overview of art, diplomacy, and cultural exchange in an age of imperial and mercantile expansion in the ancient Near East and across the Mediterranean in the first millennium B.C.—the dawn of the Classical age.

The teacher, Aaron Port, lives in Greenwich Village and reverse commutes once a week on the Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon line. His students are a mixed bag: Frieda Cohen, Anna Cantor, and Midge Braverman, housewives all, embrace each other on arrival, and update their running checklists on each other’s kids, husbands, and lawns. Their opening gambit is to tell Aaron in no uncertain terms that they are only there because French Cooking and Flower Arranging are full. The two men in the class, Jack Hassenpflug and Marc Adams, sit silently at their desks. One final student, Joan Dellamond, rushes in late—but she actually does intend to be there. An aspiring writer troubled by a failing marriage, Joan has little in common with her neighbors. And yet, she does seek connection. Maybe this class will bring her, and Aaron, something that neither quite expects.
