Book Synopsis Flowering Plants. Eudicots by : Klaus Kubitzki
Download or read book Flowering Plants. Eudicots written by Klaus Kubitzki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-10 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the tenth in the series, comprises modern treatments for the families and genera of the eudicot orders Sapindales and Cucurbitales. The circumscription of the orders, families and genera conforms to the most recent systematic studies. The family treatments include descriptions of the families and the genera, genera classification keys, discussions of relationships and data on their morphology, reproductive biology, distribution, ecology and economic importance. Sapindales and Cucurbitales, as understood in this volume, comprise 16 families with 637 genera and roughly 9,240 species. Sapindales include large tropical and southern temperate tree families such as the Anacardiaceae, Sapindaceae (these in the modern circumscription, which includes Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae), Meliaceae and Rutaceae, which have long been considered to be closely related. Cucurbitales represent a relatively new ordinal concept; apart from some small woody groups, the order contains two large families, Cucurbitaceae and Begoniaceae, which are predominantly, and likely basically, herbaceous. A detailed treatment of the tropical and southern temperate woody family Myrtaceae (itself comprising 142 genera and 6,700 species) is an addendum to the treatment of the Myrtales in Vol. IX of this series.

Book Synopsis Darwin's Most Wonderful Plants by : Ken Thompson
Download or read book Darwin's Most Wonderful Plants written by Ken Thompson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people, the story of Charles Darwin goes like this: he ventured to the Galapagos Islands on the Beagle, was inspired by the biodiversity of the birds he saw there, and immediately returned home to write his theory of evolution. But this simplified narrative is inaccurate and lacking: it leaves out a major part of Darwin’s legacy. He published On the Origin of Species nearly thirty years after his voyages. And much of his life was spent experimenting with and observing plants. Darwin was a brilliant and revolutionary botanist whose observations and theories were far ahead of his time. With Darwin’s Most Wonderful Plants, biologist and gardening expert Ken Thompson restores this important aspect of Darwin’s biography while also delighting in the botanical world that captivated the famous scientist. Thompson traces how well Darwin’s discoveries have held up, revealing that many are remarkably long-lasting. Some findings are only now being confirmed and extended by high-tech modern research, while some have been corrected through recent analysis. We learn from Thompson how Darwin used plants to shape his most famous theory and then later how he used that theory to further push the boundaries of botanical knowledge. We also get to look over Darwin’s shoulder as he labors, learning more about his approach to research and his astonishing capacity for hard work. Darwin’s genius was to see the wonder and the significance in the ordinary and mundane, in the things that most people wouldn’t look at twice. Both Thompson and Darwin share a love for our most wonderful plants and the remarkable secrets they can unlock. This book will instill that same joy in casual gardeners and botany aficionados alike.

Book Synopsis World Checklist of Myrtaceae by : Rafaël Govaerts
Download or read book World Checklist of Myrtaceae written by Rafaël Govaerts and published by Royal Botanic Gardens Kew. This book was released on 2008 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myrtaceae is the ninth largest flowering plant family; it is economically important in the production of timber, gums, essential oils, fruits and spices, and contains many commonly cultivated ornamentals. The family is particularly rich in large genera, often found in some of the world's most threatened ecosystems, where their fruits comprise an important part of the diet of primates and birds. The similarity of Myrtaceae species is high, and its taxonomic and nomenclatural history is complex, resulting in notorious difficulties in basic identification, inventory compilation and floristic treatment. The World Checklist of Myrtaceae is a much needed work that lists all validly published names in the family, providing the source of their publication and indicating which names are currently accepted and which are synonyms. It will be respected as the standard nomenclatural reference for further research into this important family.
Download or read book Index Kewensis written by R. A. Davies and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1987 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Index Kewensis and its supplements, issued every five years, are concise reference sources for the names of flowering plants. They list the places of publication, authors, and country of origin for each species. The supplements also record the transference of species from one genus to another as taxonomic opinion changes. The work is thus an indispensable reference source, whether the reader is interested in academic or applied aspects of the subject.
