Book excerpt: Total phosphorus (P) in broiler manure has been reduced by decreasing dietary non phytate P (NPP) in combination with added phytase or low phytate (LP) grains. However, few studies have investigated the effects of diet amendment on performance and P excretion from broiler breeders, while the reported effects on water soluble P (WSP) from broilers have been inconsistent. To address this, broiler breeders were fed reduced NPP diets and phytase during the rearing (10-21 wk) and laying (22-64 wk) phase (Chapter 1). Decreasing dietary NPP below 0.37% reduced fertility, which was hypothesized to result from insufficient P intake during rearing. Decreasing NPP in breeder laying diets to 0.19% (no phytase) or 0.09% (with phytase) had no effect on eggs or chicks produced, but reduced manure total P and WSP by 39 to 42%, respectively. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 investigated reduced available P (AvP), phytase, phytate level, and the calcium (Ca):AvP or Ca:NPP ratios in broiler diets on ileal P and amino acid (AA) absorption, P retention, and total P and WSP in manure. Reduced AvP and phytase decreased manure total P. However, manure WSP and the ratio of WSP:total P were controlled by the dietary Ca:AvP ratio. Effects of Ca:AvP on WSP were dependent on the initial dietary phyate level and were mediated by altered phytate hydrolysis, precipitation of CaP complexes and urinary P output. Including LP soybean meal (SBM) in diets decreased total P and WSP by 49% and 56%, respectively, while phytase increased the WSP:total P ratio in manure. Maximum P retention and minimum total P output occurred when the dietary Ca:NPP ratio was 2.34:1 and 2.53:1 in LP and high phytate (HP) SBM diets, respectively. Dietary Ca had no effect on amino acid (AA) absorption in HP SBM but decreased AA absorption in LP SBM diets when Ca was>0.93%. Therefore, while a wider Ca:NPP ratio could decrease manure WSP, this may negatively affect AA absorption when diets contain LP SBM.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a changing climate, livestock production is expected to exhibit dual roles of mitigation and adaptation in order to meet the challenge of food security. This book approaches the issues of livestock production and climate change through three sections: I. Livestock production, II. Climate change and, III. Enteric methane amelioration. Section I addresses issues of feed quality and availability, abiotic stress (heat and nutritional) and strategies for alleviation, livestock generated nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, and approaches for harnessing the complex gut microbial diversity. Section II discusses the effects of climate change on livestock diversity, farm animal reproduction, impact of meat production on climate change, and emphasising the role of indigenous livestock in climatic change to sustain production. Section III deals with the most recent approaches to amelioration of livestock methane such as breeding for low methane emissions, reductive acetogenesis, immunization/vaccine-based concepts and archaea phage therapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of broiler breeder diet modifications to reduce phosphorus (P) excretion have evaluated bird performance, but no studies have quantified the effects of P in the manure and the impacts to soil and plant availability once soil-applied. Four diets were formulated by factoring two levels, 0.40 and 0.22% available P (NRC, Low, respectively), with or without phytase during the breeder laying phase (wk 22 to 64). Breeders fed phytase produced manures with 15% lower total P concentration, but did not change manure water-soluble P (WSP). However, P in the breeder manures was> 92% orthophosphate. The incubation of the four unique manures in samples of Portsmouth (Typic Umbraquult) and Wagram (Arenic Kandiudult) series generally did not differ in concentrations of Mehlich-3 P, soil WSP, total inorganic P, and total P. Phosphorus-based applications of breeder manures (NRC, Low) and triple superphosphate (TSP, Ca[H2PO4]2 H2O) were applied to a P-deficient, Portsmouth soil in the greenhouse to determine the response of corn (Zea mays). Corn growth was equal among P sources in the initial study, but it tended to be greater in the soils amended with breeder manures in the residual study due to the P applied and the apparent liming effect of the soil. The NRC and Low breeder manures were applied at 39 kg P ha-1 in 2007 at Salisbury (Typic Rhodudult), Lewiston (Aquic Paleudult), and Plymouth (Typic Umbraquult), which ranged in soil P levels. Plymouth included TSP and an untreated control. Corn growth was equal among soils amended with the breeder manures NRC and Low in all site-years and grain P removal was equal five out of six site-years. Grain production, grain P removal, and applied P recovery were equal among P sources in 2007, but the breeder manure treatments were greater than TSP in 2008. Breeder manures should be considered equivalent to TSP in P impacts to the soil and plant availability.
