Book Synopsis Contaminants and the Soil Environment in the Australasia-Pacific Region by : R. Naidu

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australasia-Pacific Region supports approximately 50% of the world's population. The last half-century has witnessed a rapid increase in the regional population, agricultural productivity, industrial activities and trade within the region. Both the demand for increased food production and the desire to improve the economic conditions have affected regional environmental quality. This volume presents an overview of the fate of contaminants in the soil environment; current soil management factors used to control contaminant impacts, issues related to sludge and effluent disposals in the soil environment; legal, health and social impacts of contaminated land, remediation approaches and strategies to manage contaminated land, some of the problems associated with environmental degradation in the Australasia-Pacific Region and steps that we need to take to safeguard our environment.

Book Synopsis Urban Stormwater by : Victorian Stormwater Committee,
Download or read book Urban Stormwater written by Victorian Stormwater Committee, and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1999-10-28 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intense concentration of human activity in urban areas leads to changes in both the quantity and quality of runoff that eventually reaches our streams, lakes, wetlands, estuaries and coasts. The increasing use of impervious surfaces designed to provide smooth and direct pathways for stormwater run-off, has led to greater runoff volumes and flow velocities in urban waterways. Unmanaged, these changes in the quantity and quality of stormwater can result in considerable damage to the environment. Improved environmental performance is needed to ensure that the environmental values and beneficial uses of receiving waters are sustained or enhanced. Urban Stormwater - Best-Practice Environmental Management Guidelines resulted from a collaboration between State government agencies, local government and leading research institutions. The guidelines have been designed to meet the needs of people involved in the planning, design or management of urban land uses or stormwater drainage systems. They provide guidance in ten key areas: *Environmental performance objectives *Stormwater management planning *Land use planning *Water sensitive urban design *Construction site management *Business surveys *Education and awareness *Enforcement *Structural treatment measures *Flow management Engineers and planners within local government, along with consultants to the development industry, should find the guidelines especially useful. Government agencies should also find them helpful in assessing the performance of stormwater managers. While developed specifically for application in Victoria, Australia, the information will be of value to stormwater managers everywhere.

In presenting a holistic, integrated approach to the subject it aims to showcase the world's best practice in river management and so act as a forum for learning and exchange of ideas for river managers, to celebrate achievements in river management, giving full value to social and ecological aspects of rivers, and to increase public attention to issues of river management. In keeping with its goal of addressing all aspects of river management, the 2001 Riversymposium featured several key topics and river management case studies. From the wide-ranging and lively programme 31 articles have been selected for these proceedings. Following the keynote address there are sections covering: Human Impacts on River Health; Rivers as Urban Landscapes - the Renaissance of the Waterfront; The Economics of River Management; Sustainable River Management; Community Involvement in River Management; Environmental Flows. With contributions from around the world, the Riversymposium proceedings present a holistic view of river management, offering scientists, politicians, practitioners, industry and community groups a key resource on current issues relating to the management of rivers.

Book Synopsis Eutrophication Research - State of the Art by : R. Roijackers
Download or read book Eutrophication Research - State of the Art written by R. Roijackers and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 1998-05-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eutrophication is a classic example of a problem that requires a multi-disciplinary, multi-sectorial and multi-focal approach for its solution. Over time many surface waters have become overloaded with nutrients with dire ecological consequences. Initial attempts to tackle excessive algal growths in lakes by crude chemical treatments were superseded by strategies that began to attack what was believed to be the source of the problems: excessive phosphorus in wastewater. Today it is widely accepted that eutrophication is a highly complex phenomenon that can be averted or abated by holistic approaches. The development of a more thorough understanding of eutrophication and of practicable measures to combat it have been prime concerns in the distinguished career of Professor Lambertus Lijklema. It is thus most appropriate that to pay tribute to him on his retirement leading experts from the world of eutrophication research should gather to review our knowledge of all aspects of the phenomenon. The 27 papers selected for these proceedings examine the science of the processes involved and of the whole system, the ecological effects, modelling studies, and the policies and management measures that are being successfully applied. These proceedings will be an exceedingly valuable publication for all those engaged with the problem of eutrophication.
