Using a quantitative descriptive design, a convenience sample of nursing students, divided into two cohorts, and at different stages of their nursing education, was tested. Previous studies of nurses showed often negative attitude, rooted in perceptions, stigma, frustration, and perceived inabilities to provide care. The attitudes of nursing students have not been previously investigated. The results of this study indicate lower levels of antipathy toward patients with self-injuries displayed by nursing students when compared with experienced emergency room nurses. Further research is needed in order to investigate the effectiveness of educational intervention on improved empathy in nursing students' attitudes.
