Throughout her nearly four-decades-long nursing career, Patrice D'Amato has seen the most diverse cross section of the human population inside abortion clinics. A compassionate mosaic memoir, The View from the Clinic humanizes abortion through the multifaceted experiences inside a clinic-from the eyes and heart of a nurse who worked there. You'll discover: A transparent, clinical perspective into abortion services in America. Common myths-and the truth-about the long-term effects of abortions. What happens during an appointment to terminate a pregnancy. The fascinating history of birth control-and how abortion was once a highly visible, accepted aspect of life. Reimagined actual stories of patients' paths to abortion, from a headstrong teen to a heartbroken mom-to-be. Pull the exam room curtain aside, and journey into a new perspective of abortion with The View from the Clinic.

Book excerpt: Abortion is a legal medical procedure that has been provided to millions of American women. Since the Institute of Medicine first reviewed the health implications of national legalized abortion in 1975, there has been a plethora of related scientific research, including well-designed randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews, and epidemiological studies examining abortion care. This research has focused on examining the relative safety of abortion methods and the appropriateness of methods for different clinical circumstances. With this growing body of research, earlier abortion methods have been refined, discontinued, and new approaches have been developed. The Safety and Quality of Abortion Care in the United States offers a comprehensive review of the current state of the science related to the provision of safe, high-quality abortion services in the United States. This report considers 8 research questions and presents conclusions, including gaps in research.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between maternal-child nurses' knowledge about elective abortion and their attitude toward patients undergoing an elective abortion. The hypothesis stated that: There will be a positive correlation between maternal-child nurses' knowledge about elective abortion and a positive attitude toward this type of abortion. The Pearson's Correlation Coefficient for Abortion Knowledge and Attitude showed there was little or no correlation between these two variables. The T-test showed that the hypothesis was not significant at the .05 level of significance. Therefore, this hypothesis was not supported. It was recommended that the study be repeated using a larger sample of maternal-child nurses, a comparison study be done using medical-surgical nurses and maternal-child nurses to see if there is a correlation between these two groups, and be repeated using a sample of doctors and nurses to see if there is a correlation between their knowledge and attitude toward elective abortion. This study could be repeated using a population of lay people in comparison to registered nurses working in the maternal-child area.

Book excerpt: This book contains a foreword by Ann Thompson, Professor of Midwifery, University of Manchester. This illuminating book describes young people's thoughts and feelings before and after an abortion, and includes their experiences in the long term. It increases understanding and stimulates discussion of abortion issues without bias, and incorporates political, religious, social, physical and mental considerations in its wide-ranging approach. The personal narratives from both women and men make the issues particularly powerful. "Memories After Abortion" offers thought provoking ideas for all health and social care professionals involved in pregnancy issues. Undergraduate and postgraduate health and social care students, counsellors, therapists, teachers and youth/religious leaders will also find it invaluable. 'Consideration of abortion causes a lot of distress, anxiety and debate within society. This book should be read by women and men so that they can debate and understand each others' views and experiences in their relationships. It should also be read by nurses, midwives, doctors, health-service administrators and those providing social care.' - Ann M Thomson, in the Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Few studies have focused on college students' attitudes concerning abortion. No published studies were found that addressed baccalaureate nursing students' attitudes. This is an initial effort to investigate nursing students' attitudes concerning abortion. The research questions were:1) what are baccalaureate nursing students' attitudes concerning abortion? and 2) is there a difference between the attitudes concerning abortion of sophomore, junior, and senior level students? A cross-sectional, cohort comparison, descriptive design was used to study a sample of baccalaureate nursing students at Ohio State. After obtaining exemption from the IRB, a cover letter and survey, developed by the investigator, were placed in the mailboxes of the 418 baccalaureate students in the College of Nursing. The actual sample was 110 students who returned completed surveys. The Abortion Attitude Survey instrument is comprised of 17 Likert-type items and 10 questions pertaining to background information of the participants. The sample was predominantly white, females under 25 years of age, which is representative of the baccalaureate study body in the College of Nursing. Based on 13 of the 15 items in the survey, the findings indicated that the sample had an overall pro-life attitude concerning abortion. The two items for which the participants' scores indicated a pro-abortion attitude were if the female's health was in danger or if she had been raped. The only difference found between the three levels of students was for the item pertaining to including the male responsible for the pregnancy in the decision to terminate the pregnancy. Sophomore students had a significantly higher mean for this item than the junior level participants, while the senior level students' item mean did not differ from that of the sophomore and junior level participants. Overall the sophomore, junior, and senior students were similar in regard to their primarily pro-life attitudes concerning abortion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever reproductive choices women make--whether they opt to end a pregnancy through abortion or continue to term and give birth--they are considered to be at risk of suffering serious mental health problems. According to opponents of abortion in the United States, potential injury to women is a major reason why people should consider abortion a problem. On the other hand, becoming a mother can also be considered a big risk. This fine, well-balanced book is about how people represent the results of reproductive choices. It examines how and why pregnancy and its various outcomes have come to be discussed this way. The author's interest in the medicalization of reproduction--its representation as a mental health problem--first arose in relation to abortion. There is a very clear contrast between the construction of women who have abortions, implied by moralized argument against abortion, and the construction that results when the case against abortion focuses on its effects on women's mental health. Lee argues that claims that connect abortion with mental illness have been limited in their influence, but this is not to suggest that they have not become a focus for discussion and have had no impact. The limits to such claims about abortion do not, by any means, suggest limits to the process of the medicalization of pregnancy more broadly, that is, a process of demedicalization. The final theme of Ellie Lee's book is the selective medicalization of reproduction. Centering on the claim that abortion can create a post abortion syndrome, the author examines the "medicalization" of the abortion problem on both sides of the Atlantic. Lee points to contrasts in legal and medical dimensions of the abortion issue that make for some important differences, but argues that in both the United States and Great Britain, the post-abortion-syndrome claim constitutes an example of the limits to medicalization and the return to the theme of motherhood as a psychological ordeal. Lee makes the case for looking to the social dimensions of mental health problems to account for and understand debates about what makes women ill. Ellie Lee is research fellow in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Southampton, Highfield, United Kingdom.

Book excerpt: This study examined the attitudes toward abortion in pre-medicine student and what influences, if any, current medical school policies and practices on abortion training have on their decision to apply, or pursue a medical career. It explored the differences between routine (mandatory barring religious or moral objection), and elective (opt out option) training on abortion procedures, and whether or not pre-medicine students plan to participate in either. Participants were taken from James Madison University athletic training, diet, health science, and health services administration pre-medicine concentrations. Willing participants were surveyed on their attitudes toward abortion. It was determined that most students do not base their decision to apply to medical school on the school's current policies on abortion training. This research will provide valuable information regarding abortion training in medical schools and what influences, if any, it has on students' decision to apply.

Book excerpt: Understanding the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is important for a greater understanding of the current state of sexual and reproductive rights of Palestinian women. Constant military occupation has been a determining factor hindering the development of comprehensive and coherent health policies and programmes. As a result of the Oslo Accords and the Israeli-Palestinian Interim Agreement in 1994, the Palestinian National Authority was granted limited authority over portions of the West Bank and Gaza. In 2007-2008 a multi-national, multi-disciplinary study team undertook a national study to assess the reproductive health content of nursing education and identify gaps in curricular coverage and implementation. One component of this project included exploring final year nursing and midwifery students' attitudes toward a range of sexual and reproductive health issues. This thesis analyzes these data and explores the demographic factors, including gender, region, and residence, associated with nursing and midwifery students' attitudes toward abortion and contraception-related laws and policies. Our findings suggest that there is a considerable need to incorporate values clarification exercises as well as structured sessions dedicated to laws and policies governing sexual and reproductive health into the formal curricula of programs in both the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Our results also shed further light on the dynamics shaping abortion and contraception attitudes among health professions students in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
