Book Synopsis Nurses United by : Krystle Irene Banfield
Download or read book Nurses United written by Krystle Irene Banfield and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: The healthcare landscape is changing and nurses have experienced mergers and reorganizing of their work, negatively impacting their workplace experience and leading to decreased job satisfaction. One means of dealing with these changes has been through collective bargaining, but this, for some nurses, is in contrast to their professional ideology. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the dichotomy between professional and collective bargaining ideologies via a content analysis of National Nurse to discover what role National Nurses United plays in integrating the two. Methods: A content analysis was performed by coding 433 articles published in National Nurse. Results: The findings of this study suggest that the agenda of National Nurses United, via their publication National Nurse, is a strong focus on the collective bargaining ideology. This is consistent with 67% of the articles coded falling under this frame. Implications for Nursing: This research can be used to inform administrators on how to better engage bedside nurses so that collaborative work can be accomplished within the hospital environment. Also, it could benefit faculty to incorporate current trends and the history of collective bargaining into the curriculum to better socialize nurses to understand the complex history of the profession they are entering, potentially encouraging future nurse leaders to be able to weave professional ideologies into the collective bargaining ideologies in order to better compliment each other.

Book excerpt: This is the first practical guide for nurses on how to incorporate the knowledge, skills, and tools of Strength-Based Nursing Care (SBC) into everyday practice. The text, based on a model developed by the McGill University Nursing Program, signifies a paradigm shift from a deficit-based model to one that focuses on individual, family, and community strengths as a cornerstone of effective nursing care. The book develops the theoretical foundations underlying SBC, promotes the acquisition of fundamental skills needed for SBC practice, and offers specific strategies, techniques, and tools for identifying strengths and harnessing them to facilitate healing and health. The testimony of 46 nurses demonstrates how SBC can be effectively used in multiple settings across the lifespan.
