Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nursery Rhymes of England: Obtained Principally From Oral Tradition If the indulgence of the public should be so far ex tended to my efforts in this very humble walk of literature, as to enable me at some future period to attempt a more complete collection, I shall hope to render the classification less Open to criticism than it is at present. The difficulties of doing so in many cases must be my apology and it is evident that the correct nomenclature cannot always be obtained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Rhymes and Nursery Tales: A Sequel to the Nursery Rhymes of England IT were greatly to be desired that the instructors of our children could be persuaded how much is lost by rejecting the venerable relics of nursery traditional literature, and substituting in their place the present cold, unimaginative, - I had almost said, unnatural, prosaic good-boy stories. In the latter case, oh serves Sir Walter Scott, their minds are, as it were, put into the stocks, like their feet at the dancing-school, and the moral always consists in good conduct being crowned with success. Truth is, I would not give one tear shed over Little Red Riding Hood for all the benefit to be derived from a hundred histories of J emmy Goodchild. I think the selfish tendencies will be soon enough acquired in this arithmetical age; and that, to make the higher class of character, our own wild fictions - like our own simple music - will have more effect in awakening the fancy and elevating the disposition, than the colder and more elaborate compositions of modern authors and composers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traditional Nursery Songs of England: With Pictures by Eminent Modern Artists The Pictures, though made especially for the benefit of my young audience, will not, I feel pretty sure, be uninteresting to more advanced connoisseurs. I am not at liberty to mention the names of the artists who in their kind sympathies for children have obliged me with them. It is a mystery to be unravelled by the little people themselves, who, as they advance in a knowledge and love of beauty, will not fail to recognize in the works of some of the best of our painters of familiar life, the pencils of those who gave them early lessons in genuine art. LD King Cole Was a merry old soul, And a merry old soul was he; He called for his pipe, And he called for his bowl, And he called for his fiddlers three. Every fiddler, he had a fiddle, And a very fine fiddle had he; Twee tweedle dee, tweedle dee, went the fiddlers. Oh, there's none so rare, As can compare With King Cole and his fiddlers three! [The traditional Nursery Rhymes of England commence with a legendary satire on King Cole, who reigned in Britain, as the old chroniclers inform us, in the third century after Christ. According to Robert of Gloucester, he was the father of St. Helena, and if so, Butler must be wrong in ascribing an obscure origin to the celebrated mother of Constantine. King Cole was a brave and popular man in his day, and ascended the throne of Britain on the death of Asclepiod, amidst the acclamations of the people, or, as Robert of Gloucester expresses himself, the "fole was tho of this lond y-paid wel y-nou." At Colchester there is a large earthwork, supposed to have been a Roman amphitheatre, which goes popularly by the name of "King Cole's kitchen." According to Jeffrey of Monmouth, King Cole's daughter was well skilled in music, but we unfortunately have no evidence to show that her father was attached to that science, further than what is contained in the foregoing lines, which are of doubtful antiquity. The following version of the song is of the seventeenth century, the one given above being probably a modernization: - Good King Cole, He call'd for his bowl, And he call'd for fidlers three: And there was fiddle fiddle, And twice fiddle fiddle, For 'twas my lady's birth-day; Therefore we keep holiday, And come to be merry.] II. When good king Arthur ruled this land, He was a goodly king; He stole three pecks of barley-meal, To make a bag-pudding. A bag-pudding the king did make, And stuff'd it well with plums: And in it put great lumps of fat, As big as my two thumbs. The king and queen did eat thereof, And noblemen beside; And what they could not eat that night, The queen next morning fried. Book excerpt: Children's Rhymes, Children's Games, Children's Songs, Children's Stories: A Book for Bairns and Big Folk was authored by Scotsman Robert Ford This example of Ford's work is an effort to document and collate the wealth of popular children's nursery rhymes and games. Ford presents the rhymes, stories, and songs in their entirety, often alongside a detailed entry by the author. The book begins with an examination of nursery rhymes, which includes entries for many of the most popular rhymes. Ford's commentary is extensive in this section, as the author attempts to add context and history to these works. From there, he examines counting out rhymes, rhyme games, children's songs, schoolroom facts and children's stories. The section on rhyme games is significant and includes a detailed breakdown of the actions that should be completed alongside each rhyme. Robert Ford is an author who loves children's stories - that much is clear when reading this text. The level of detail Ford provides is impressive as he has clearly carried out significant research into children's rhymes and stories, and presents an almost overwhelming amount of information about the origins of these rhymes. Ford handles the subject matter seriously and with rigour. Children's Rhymes, Children's Games, Children's Songs, Children's Stories: A Book for Bairns and Big Folk is a notable collection and analysis of children's rhymes and stories. Author Robert Ford has gone to great lengths in researching his subject, and the result is an enjoyable and surprisingly hefty book about this light-hearted topic.
