Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s one of education’s greatest challenges: How do we shape our youngest students, who often are just learning how to hold a pencil, into capable writers within the span of a single school year? Text Structures from Nursery Rhymes offers the solution: a clear and actionable framework for guiding young students to write successfully in any style, from narrative to descriptive to persuasive. The key to the strategy lies in using familiar text structures to break down a story into its main components — for example, "Where I was," "Who I saw," and "What I thought" — in order to immediately thrust students into the role of the writer. This groundbreaking book provides 53 lessons, each centered around a classic nursery rhyme, and all the tools you’ll need to Capitalize on the story’s rhythm and rhyme to make an instant connection with your students Convey the story’s text structure using the lesson’s whimsical illustrations, providing a visual model that resonates with children Lead the classroom in creating new stories — in words, pictures, or both — utilizing the text structure you’ve defined Put each nursery rhyme to work as a springboard for important language-arts topics Fine-tune your approach at every step based on your preferred teaching style and students’ progress Put Text Structures from Nursery Rhymes to work in your classroom and discover how text structures, already a remarkable success in later grades, can also have a profound impact on younger students’ progress. Bonus! Includes eight downloadable paper dolls—1 man, 1 woman, 1 girl, 1 boy, and 4 animals. Your students can use the paper dolls to retell the nursery rhymes, illustrate their own stories based on a nursery rhyme, or even to act out stories from other books in your classroom library.

Book excerpt: From the very first chapter of this informative and inspiring book, a clear picture emerges of how even three- and four-year-olds' capacities for serious authorship can and should be supported. - Lillian G. Katz Coauthor of Young Investigators: The Project Approach in the Early Years By the time they reach preschool or kindergarten, young children are already writers. They don't have much experience, but they're filled with stories to tell and ideas to express - they want to show the world what they know and see. All they need is a nurturing teacher like you to recognize the writer at work within them. All you need to help them is Already Ready. Taking an exciting, new approach to working with our youngest students, Already Ready shows you how, by respecting children as writers, engaged in bookmaking, you can gently nudge them toward a lifetime of joyful writing. Katie Wood Ray and Matt Glover guide you through fundamental concepts of early writing. Providing numerous, helpful examples of early writing - complete with transcriptions - they demonstrate how to: make sense of children's writing and interpret how they represent sounds, ideas, and images see important developmental signs in writers that you can use to help them grow further recognize the thinking young children engage in and discover that it's the same thinking more experienced writers use to craft purposeful, thoughtful pieces. Then Ray and Glover show you how little ones can develop powerful understandings about: texts and their characteristics the writing process what it means to be a writer. You'll learn how to support your writers' quest to make meaning, as they grow their abilities and refine their thinking about writing through teaching strategies such as: reading aloud working side by side with writers sharing children's writing. Writing is just one part of a busy early childhood classroom, but even in little doses, a nurturing approach can work wonders and help children connect the natural writer inside them to a life of expressing themselves on paper. Find that approach, share it with your students, and you'll discover that you don't have to get students ready to write - they're Already Ready.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nursery Lesson Book: A Guide for Mothers in Teaching Young Children In making a young child begin to write words as soon as he reads them, my experience has been that it is not wise to allow printing, which at best is but a makeshift, and is liable to form habits which the child must get rid of later on. In writing, the slate, or the sand-table, as suggested by Richter, will be found invaluable the latter is simply a board with ridges at each side, holding a few quarts of sand spread out in a thin layer. With a splint of wood a child can make endless letters and figures. In writing, as in reading, words and not letters are to be aimed at; and while the child may have an alphabet for reference, it is not necessary to memorize the special order in which letters are placed in the alphabet. With drawing, attempts, even of the crudest kind, are required, and there is nothing that a child Of three or four years of age will work at more persistently than the drawing of simple figures. The object lesson must be left largely to the intelligence of the mother, as it is not within the Scope of this book to do more than suggest an outline in this direction. As an illustration of what an object lesson can be made to teach, I cannot do better than give the following sketch of a lesson upon cotton which it was my privilege to hear recently. The children were Older than those in the nursery, but the principle will apply even in nursery teaching. The pupils were asked to take out their handkerchiefs and examine them. A few questions by the teacher made it clear that while some Of the children knew that their handkerchiefs were made of cotton, Very few had any notion as to what cotton was, where it came from, and how it had become a handkerchief. Then the teacher described the cotton fields, and pointed out the Cotton States on the map; there was a picture of a cotton field in bloom, with the negroes gathering the cotton; 3 dried cotton plant, with the boll about to burst, the cotton sticking out, was passed around the class. Then a miniature gin was put upon the teacher's table, and each child worked it so as to understand exactly how the cotton was separated from the seed; a spinning-machine, very crude, but showing the principle, was next brought into use, and some thread was manufactured by the class; finally, this thread was woven by a little loom, and a bit of very rough cotton cloth was turned out, each child having had an Opportunity to do part of the work and. To see how it was done. It was then Shown that this bit Of stw manufactured by the class was really Of the same kind as the handkerchiefs Of the children. It is safe to say that every one of those children knew more about cotton cloth at the end of that lesson than half the graduates Of our high schools. The time and labor required to Obtain the material for this lesson - the dried cotton plant, the toy gin, spinning machine, and loom, were insignificant as compared with the results achieved. Every mother would find it the easiest thing in the world to make a collection for nursery teaching, which would be a source Of constant delight and instruction to the children; every walk might produce something for the collection.
