Alongside the conversation which offers various reflections on Kuzucan’s life and his artistic inclinations that have evolved over time, the publication compiles newly-commissioned essays authored by Duygu Demir, Tarkan Okçuoğlu, Asuman Suner and Hakan Tüzün Şengün, providing new perspectives across the artist’s oeuvre. Designed by Ayşe Bozkurt, the publication also features photographs taken by Hadiye Cangökçe and flufoto (Barış Aras & Elif Çakırlar). Nuri Kuzucan’s solo exhibition Passage brings together a selection of the artist’s earlier works and new productions within a site-specific architectural setting. The exhibition centres on both cognitive and perceptual fluidity and transitivity by featuring works that revolve around dualities such as chaos/order, light/shadow, emptiness/fullness, surface/depth, and interior/exterior. Taking place at Arter’s 1st-floor gallery between 1 June–31 December 2023, Passage creates associations between the transitional space the exhibition resides in and the pictorial space through the architectural, literary, and metaphorical connotations of the word ‘passage’.

Rauch is widely celebrated for his captivating compositions that bring together figurative painting and surrealism into an entirely new kind of visual encounter. They often hint at broader narratives and histories—seemingly reconnecting with artistic traditions of realism—but they remain dreamlike and impossible to reduce to a single story. Though his art is highly refined and executed with great technical skill, Rauch himself stresses the intuitive, deeply personal nature of how he works. As the artist notes, “My process is far less a reflection than it is drawing from the sediments of my past, which occurs in an almost trance-like state.” Eight large-scale canvases and seven smaller, more intimately scaled works continue the artist’s exploration of figuration and the ambiguous nature of meaning in visual art. In some of the larger works, the saturation of the canvas with characters, objects, and, forms, all rendered at different scales and in conflicting arrangements, creates a collage-like quality—a figurative scrapbook of Rauch’s personal iconography. The publication features a short story by acclaimed novelist and playwright Daniel Kehlmann, which was inspired by the paintings in this book. The fantastical text moves between present-day New York and an unknown time of enchanted forests, knights, and witches, exploring the many layers found in Rauch’s canvases. Published on the occasion of the artist’s solo exhibition at David Zwirner, Hong Kong in 2019, Neo Rauch: PROPAGANDA is available in both English-only and bilingual English/traditional Chinese editions.

The Close-Up series starts its journey with Sarkis’s iconic work Çaylak Sokak - an artwork that is deemed to be one of the turning points in the history of contemporary art in Turkey. The artwork, which was first exhibited at the Maçka Art Gallery in 1986, and then took part in the Wizards of the Earth exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1989, bears the same name as the street in the Talimhane district of Istanbul where Sarkis was born and raised. Authored by Emre Baykal, the chief curator of Arter, Çaylak Sokak offers not only a multilayered reading of Sarkis’ work in different contexts intertwined with political and cultural history but also provides a personal journey constructed around the work itself. Book excerpt: Despite the strictures of the extreme Behaviourists, psychologists have been taking an increasing interest in the development of theories concerning the 'mechanisms' internal to humans and animals which permit perceptual, memory, and problem solving behaviour. One consideration which has enormously stimulated an interest in theories of internal cognitive represen tation has been progress in the theory and the technology of computing machines, which has opened the promising prospect of computer simulation of human and animal psychological functions. What has developed is the possibility of constructing models of human psychology, realizing them in computer hardware, and testing the resultant machine performance against that of the human subject. A second consideration which helps motivate the construction of models of internal representation is the considerable advances in experimental and theoretical knowledge of the human brain understood from the neuro-anatomical view. The likely profit of adopting a narrowly Behaviourist methodology shrinks in the face of our growing, fine-grained knowledge of cerebral 'wetware'. The purpose of this volume is selectively to exhibit some of the proposals concerning theories of internal representation which have been put forward in recent years. The area of central concern is the resurgence of interest in the role of imagery in cognition which has taken place in the last fifteen years.
