This book was released on 2013-04-29 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing feeling that standard cognitive science has not fulfilled many of the expectations which were initially attached to it. At least two critical approaches lend themselves to those who are looking for new perspectives to understanding the human mind. For the first, there is the critique which has been inspired by recent natural science, especially by quantum theory and neuroscience. For the second, continental philosophers, especially postphenomenological and postmodern thinkers, have been critical of some of the main goals which cognitive science pursues. The underlying idea of this publication is that the fragmentation of the prevailing philosophical scene can be overcome only by a freely evolving dialogue between all these different points of view. In this volume we can see a whole variety of responses to this invitation to dialogue. These responses cover, among others, the following areas: quantum physical perspectives to the study of mind, cognitive neuroscience, cognitive musicology and postmodern visions. Topics covered include: non-conceptual experience and content, quantum, brain dynamics, collective thinking, implicate order, mindware and neural anomalies.

Book excerpt: Alexander Bogdanov was a co-founder, with Lenin, of the Bolshevik faction of the Russian Social Democratic Party in 1904. His ideas on the sociology of culture led to the founding of the Proletkult in 1917 and during the 1920s these ideas were taken up, adapted and often distorted in the course of the 'Cultural Revolution'. Bogdanov's textbooks in sociology and economics were widely used during the 1920s. This bibliography of Bogdanov's works takes advantage of the opening of the Party and State archives and provides references to the principal relevant archives in Europe and the United States. Its publication is a landmark in the history of Bolshevism and in the history of Russian social thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available for the first time in English and freshly adapted as the acclaimed documentary Burning Out, Pascal Chabot's polemic treatise - Global Burnout - takes the phenomenon we call burnout as not just an individual problem that affects a few exhausted people, but rather 'a disease of civilization', connected to concepts of progress, technology, and desire, which are the hallmarks of this era of experimentation. First analysing the archaeology of the concept, Chabot distinguishes three main types of burnout: the first, specific to professions who help others, appears to be the exhaustion of their humanism; the second, a trouble of adaptation and perfectionism; and the third, which is a consequence of the struggle for recognition. The philosophical implications of each of these three states is identified, allowing Chabot to buck the trend towards a negative, nearly fatalistic outlook, something not surprising considering the intrinsic gravity of the subject matter. An excellent story teller as well as an adequate elaborater of complex theories, Chabot's Global Burnout presents an introduction to the topic and therapy for the modern reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A newly updated edition of this classic, hugely influential account of how the Romans defended their vast empire. At the height of its power, the Roman Empire encompassed the entire Mediterranean basin, extending much beyond it from Britain to Mesopotamia, from the Rhine to the Black Sea. Rome prospered for centuries while successfully resisting attack, fending off everything from overnight robbery raids to full-scale invasion attempts by entire nations on the move. How were troops able to defend the Empire’s vast territories from constant attacks? And how did they do so at such moderate cost that their treasury could pay for an immensity of highways, aqueducts, amphitheaters, city baths, and magnificent temples? In The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire, seasoned defense analyst Edward N. Luttwak reveals how the Romans were able to combine military strength, diplomacy, and fortifications to effectively respond to changing threats. Rome’s secret was not ceaseless fighting, but comprehensive strategies that unified force, diplomacy, and an immense infrastructure of roads, forts, walls, and barriers. Initially relying on client states to buffer attacks, Rome moved to a permanent frontier defense around 117 CE. Finally, as barbarians began to penetrate the empire, Rome filed large armies in a strategy of “defense-in-depth,” allowing invaders to pierce Rome’s borders. This updated edition has been extensively revised to incorporate recent scholarship and archeological findings. A new preface explores Roman imperial statecraft. This illuminating book remains essential to both ancient historians and students of modern strategy.
