Book excerpt: Numerical solutions of the boundary layer equations with arbitrary initial profiles and an assigned constant wall shear stress were carried out. Results show that after an initial non-similar flow all initial profiles for incompressible flow asymptotically approach similar profiles corresponding exactly to the Falkner-Skan similar solution. The streamwise distance required for any arbitrary initial profile to approach this similar profile depends upon the extent of departure of the initial profile from the beta = 1/2 similar profile (the larger the difference the longer the distance). For compressible boundary layers, constant wall shear stress solutions give rise to asymptotic locally similar profiles, with no particular similar profile having been determined in the present analysis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a numerical solution of turbulent boundary-layer equations for both compressible and incompressible flows. An eddy viscosity concept is used to eliminate the Reynolds shear-stress term, and an eddy-conductivity concept is used to eliminate the time mean of the product of fluctuating velocity and temperature. The turbulent boundary layer is regarded as a composite layer consisting of inner and outer regions, and a separate expression for eddy viscosity is used in each region. The ratio of eddy-viscosity to eddy conductivity is assumed to be constant. An implicit finite-difference method is used in the solution of both momentum and energy equations after they are linearized. (Author).

Book Synopsis The Solution of the Laminar-boundary-layer Equation for the Flat Plate for Velocity and Temperature Fields for Variable Physical Properties and for the Diffusion Field at High Concentration by : H. Shuh

Shuh and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In connection with Pohlhausen's solution for the temperature field on the flat plate, a series of formulas were indicated by means of which the velocity and temperature field for variable physical characteristics can be computed by an integral equation and an iteration method based on it. With it, the following cases were solved: On the assumption that the viscosity simply varies with the temperature while the other fluid properties remain constant, the velocity and temperature field on the heated and cooled plate, respectively, was computed at the Prandtl numbers 12.5 and 100 (viscous fluids). A closer study of these two cases resulted in general relations: The calculations for a gas of Pr number 0.7 (air) were conducted on the assumption that all fluid properties vary with the temperature, and the velocities are low enough for the heat of friction to be discounted. The result was a thickening of the boundary layers, but no appreciable modification in shearing stress or heat-transfer coefficient.

Book Synopsis Exact Solutions of Laminar-boundary-layer Equations with Constant Property Values for Porous Wall with Variable Temperature by : Patrick L. Donoughe
Download or read book Exact Solutions of Laminar-boundary-layer Equations with Constant Property Values for Porous Wall with Variable Temperature written by Patrick L. Donoughe and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exact solutions of the laminar-boundary-layer equations for wedge-type flow with constant property values are presented for transpiration-cooled surfaces with variable wall temperatures. The difference between wall and stream temperature is aussumed proportional to a power of the distance from the leading edge. Solutions are given for a Prandtl number of 0.7 and ranges of pressure-gradient, cooling-air-flow, and wall-temperature-gradient parameters. Boundary-layer profiles, dimensionaless boundary-layer thicknesses, and heat-transfer coefficents are given in both tabular and graphical form. Corresponding results for constant wall temperature and for impermeable surfaces are included for comparison purposes.
