Book excerpt: A numerical simulation has been performed of turbulent flow near and through a two-dimensional array of rectangular buildings (bluff bodies) in a neutrally stratified background flow. The model used for the simulation was the steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with an isotropic, linear eddy viscosity formulation for the Reynolds stresses; and, the eddy viscosity was determined using a high-Reynolds number form of the kappa-epsilon turbulence-closure model with the boundary conditions at the wall obtained with the wall-function approach. The resulting system of partial differential equations along with the concomitant boundary conditions for the problem was solved using the SIMPLE algorithm in conjunction with a non-orthogonal, collocated, cell-centered, finite volume procedure. The predictive capabilities of the numerical simulation of urban flow are validated against a very detailed and comprehensive wind tunnel data set. Vertical profiles of the mean streamwise and vertical velocities and the turbulence kinetic energy are presented and compared to those measured in the wind tunnel simulation. In addition to the comparison between modeled and measured results, the numerical simulation is used to aid in the interpretation of certain features of the flow observed in the wind tunnel simulation. it is found that the overall performance of the model is good--most of the qualitative features in the disturbed turbulent flow field in and near the building array are correctly reproduced, and the quantitative agreement is also generally fairly good (especially for the mean velocity field). The underestimation of the turbulence energy levels may arise from the inability of the model to capture the subtle effects of secondary strain, especially those associated with curvature, on the turbulence.

Book excerpt: A study of the neutrally-stratified flow within and over an array of three-dimensional (3-D) buildings (cubes) was undertaken using simple Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) flow models. These models consist of a general solution of the ensemble-averaged, steady-state, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, where the k-E turbulence model (k is turbulence kinetic energy and E is viscous dissipation rate) has been used to close the system of equations. Two turbulence closure models were tested; namely, the standard and Kato-Launder k-E models. The latter model is a modified k-E model designed specifically to overcome the stagnation point anomaly in flows past a bluff body where the standard k-E model overpredicts the production of turbulence kinetic energy near the stagnation point. Results of a detailed comparison between a wind tunnel experiment and the RANS flow model predictions are presented. More specifically, vertical profiles of the predicted mean streamwise velocity, mean vertical velocity, and turbulence kinetic energy at a number of streamwise locations that extend from the impingement zone upstream of the array, through the array interior, to the exit region downstream of the array are presented and compared to those measured in the wind tunnel experiment. Generally, the numerical predictions show good agreement for the mean flow velocities. The turbulence kinetic energy was underestimated by the two different closure models. After validation, the results of the high-resolution RANS flow model predictions were used to diagnose the dispersive stress, within and above the building array. The importance of dispersive stresses, which arise from point-to-point variations in the mean flow field, relative to the spatially-averaged Reynolds stresses are assessed for the building array.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this translation of the German edition, the authors provide insight into the numerical simulation of fluid flow. Using a simple numerical method as an expository example, the individual steps of scientific computing are presented: the derivation of the mathematical model; the discretization of the model equations; the development of algorithms; parallelization; and visualization of the computed data. In addition to the treatment of the basic equations for modeling laminar, transient flow of viscous, incompressible fluids - the Navier-Stokes equations - the authors look at the simulation of free surface flows; energy and chemical transport; and turbulence. Readers are enabled to write their own flow simulation program from scratch. The variety of applications is shown in several simulation results, including 92 black-and-white and 18 color illustrations. After reading this book, readers should be able to understand more enhanced algorithms of computational fluid dynamics and apply their new knowledge to other scientific fields.

Eta, η, the 7th letter of the Greek alphabet, is scrupulously used to denote efficiency and this is what ETA2023 strives for. In context, efficiency, η, is about avoiding waste, may this be energy, time, money, or material, in accomplishing something useful. As such, ETA2023 aims at bringing experts and future leaders together to forge more efficient ways to engineer and live. In other words, ETA2023 strives to synergise and catalyse all stakeholders, enthusiasts, and experts from academia, industry, policy arenas, and the general public, to formulate novel ways to improve tomorrow. This symposium will disseminate recent progress and promote collaborations to maximize opportunities for innovative integrated solutions. Topics of interest include resource and energy efficiency, waste reduction, and eco-friendly agriculture, architecture, engineering, and living.

Book excerpt: This book contains twenty-one original papers and one review paper published by internationally recognized experts in the Atmosphere Special Issue "Recent Advances in Urban Ventilation Assessment and Flow Modelling", years 2017–2019. The Special Issue includes contributions on recent experimental and modelling works, techniques, and developments mainly tailored to the assessment of urban ventilation on flow and pollutant dispersion in cities. The study of ventilation is of critical importance, as it addresses the capacity with which a built urban structure is capable of replacing the polluted air with ambient fresh air. Here, ventilation is recognized as a transport process that improves local microclimate and air quality and closely relates to the term “breathability”. The efficiency with which street canyon ventilation occurs depends on the complex interaction between the atmospheric boundary layer flow and the local urban morphology. The individual contributions to this Issue are summarized and categorized into four broad topics: (1) outdoor ventilation efficiency and application/development of ventilation indices, (2) relationship between indoor and outdoor ventilation, (3) effects of urban morphology and obstacles to ventilation, and (4) ventilation modelling in realistic urban districts. The results and approaches presented and proposed will be of great interest to experimentalists and modelers, and may constitute a starting point for the improvement of numerical simulations of flow and pollutant dispersion in the urban environment, for the development of simulation tools, and for the implementation of mitigation strategies.
