Book excerpt: Atmospheric thermal convection on the cumulus scale is investigated by numerical solution of the appropriate equations of hydrodynamics and thermodynamics. Initial conditions are based on real or synthetic atmospheric soundings. The one case of synthetic data studied was included to compare the model with a previous simpler model. The other cases are based on actual tropical maritime soundings, two of which correspond with conditions studied by the Naval Research Laboratory by means of instrumented aircraft. The simulated clouds are found to agree in many respects with the real clouds, and in those details in which they disagree possible explanations in terms of limitations of the model and of techniques of aerial observation are discussed. Among the features discussed in some detail are eddy transfer mechanism and the effects of multiple impulses. Recommendations are made for further improvement to the model and for additional field observations. It is concluded that this type of numerical study combined with aerial observation of real clouds offers a very effective method for the study of cumulus dynamics. (Author).

Book excerpt: Air pollution remains a major environmental issue despite many years of study and much legislative control. In rec~nt times, pollution on a global scale has become of particular concern. The gradually changing con centration of trace gases in the global troposphere due to man's activity is becomming a matter of serious concern. No scientist would dare to pre dict in detail the consequences of this gradual change due to its immense complexity involving social and economic factors and near countless chemical and phjsical cycles in our biosphere. In this chain of processes, the transport of pollution is an important factor, but only a factor. Therefore, I would like to emphasize that the mOdelling of atmospheric transport is becoming more and more an activity which fits into larger frameworks and can no longer be exercised as a single step, which bridges the gap between emissions and policy measures. This is also reflected in the topics and papers which were presented at this conference. The topics were: - emission invetories for and source treatment in air pollution dispersion models; - modelling of accidental releases; - regional and global scale dispersion mOdelling; including boundary layer-free troposphere exchange processes and subgrid scale parameter isations; - model verification and policy implications; - new developments in dispersion modelling and theory. 56 papers were presented in these sections. While many posters were dis cussed in a special session.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling atmospheric processes in order to forecast the weather or future climate change is an extremely complex and computationally intensive undertaking. One of the main difficulties is that there are a huge number of factors that need to be taken into account, some of which are still poorly understood. The Factor Separation (FS) method is a computational procedure that helps deal with these nonlinear factors. In recent years many scientists have applied FS methodology to a range of modeling problems, including paleoclimatology, limnology, regional climate change, rainfall analysis, cloud modeling, pollution, crop growth, and other forecasting applications. This book is the first to describe the fundamentals of the method, and to bring together its many applications in the atmospheric sciences. The main audience is researchers and graduate students using the FS method, but it is also of interest to advanced students, researchers, and professionals across the atmospheric sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical model for moist atmospheric thermal convection on the cumulus scale is developed and solved on a digital computer. The Boussinesq approximation and reversible thermodynamic processes are assumed. The momentum equation is solved in the Eulerian sense, but a quasi-Lagrangian scheme is used for the temperature and moisture equations. With the assumption of realistic initial temperature and moisture distributions and an initial perturbation of temperature (corresponding to solar heating) to trigger the mechanism, model clouds are grown whose features are compared with those of other types of models or of clouds in nature. Results show that if conditions of humidity and lapse rate are favorable a swelling cumulus will grow into a towering cumulus by vertical stretching of the convective cell, the resulting circulation bearing some resemblance to a ring vortex. When the cell penetrates into a layer with strong static stability and little moisture, the cell diminishes in size and strength, and an oscillatory regime is established. A form of large-scale entrainment is permitted by the model with the result that the mature cloud takes on a mushroom-like shape. The height of the base and top of the model cloud agree well with predictions from the parcel method. (Author).

Book excerpt: A case of shallow cumulus and precipitating cumulus congestus sampled at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program Southern Great Plains (SGP) supersite is analyzed using a multi-sensor observational approach and numerical simulation. Observations from a new radar suite surrounding the facility are used to characterize the evolving statistical behavior of the precipitating cloud system. This is accomplished using distributions of different measures of cloud geometry and precipitation properties. Large-eddy simulation (LES) with size-resolved (bin) microphysics is employed to determine the forcings most important in producing the salient aspects of the cloud system captured in the radar observations. Our emphasis is on assessing the importance of time-varying vs. steady-state large-scale forcing on the model's ability to reproduce the evolutionary behavior of the cloud system. Additional consideration is given to how the characteristic spatial scale and homogeneity of the forcing imposed on the simulation influences the evolution of cloud system properties. Results indicate that several new scanning radar estimates such as distributions of cloud top are useful to differentiate the value of time-varying (or at least temporally well-matched) forcing on LES solution fidelity.
