Book excerpt: Because of excessive computation time, solving the parabolic equation in higher dimensions by means of implicit finite difference schemes seems to be impracticle even if the scheme is unconditionally stable. To economize the computation time and computer storage, a stable explicit finite difference scheme is introduced for the solution of the parabolic equation of the Schroedinger type. This explicit scheme involves five spatial points and is conditionally stable by introducing and additional dissipative term. The complete theory with respect to the stability is proved. An application to a three-dimensional ocean acoustic propagation problem is included to demonstrate its validity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior level/graduate level text/reference presenting state-of-the- art numerical techniques to solve the wave equation in heterogeneous fluid-solid media. Numerical models have become standard research tools in acoustic laboratories, and thus computational acoustics is becoming an increasingly important branch of ocean acoustic science. The first edition of this successful book, written by the recognized leaders of the field, was the first to present a comprehensive and modern introduction to computational ocean acoustics accessible to students. This revision, with 100 additional pages, completely updates the material in the first edition and includes new models based on current research. It includes problems and solutions in every chapter, making the book more useful in teaching (the first edition had a separate solutions manual). The book is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate students of acoustics, geology and geophysics, applied mathematics, ocean engineering or as a reference in computational methods courses, as well as professionals in these fields, particularly those working in government (especially Navy) and industry labs engaged in the development or use of propagating models.

Book excerpt: Underwater Acoustic Modeling and Simulation examines the translation of our physical understanding of sound in the sea into mathematical models that can simulate acoustic propagation, noise and reverberation in the ocean. These models are used in a variety of research and operational applications to predict and diagnose the performance of complex sonar systems operating in the undersea environment. Previous editions of the book have provided invaluable guidance to sonar technologists, acoustical oceanographers and applied mathematicians in the selection and application of underwater acoustic models. Now that simulation is fast becoming an accurate, efficient and economical alternative to field-testing and at-sea training, this new edition will also provide useful guidance to systems engineers and operations analysts interested in simulating sonar performance. Guidelines for selecting and using available propagation, noise and reverberation models are highlighted. Specific examples of each type of model are discussed to illustrate model formulations, assumptions and algorithm efficiency. Instructive case studies demonstrate applications in sonar simulation.

This book was released on 1984 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses various aspects of the numerical solution of underwater acoustic wave propagation problems. In the first part of the report, a model propagation problem based on the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation with a variable sound speed is considered. A finite element computer code for solving such problems was implemented at NRL on the VAX 11/780. A distinctive feature of the code is the implementation of a recently developed iterative method for solving the resulting large, sparse, indefinite, non-self-adjoint system of equations. This allowed for the efficient solution of over 35,000 complex equations on a relatively small computer. Some of the results obtained after applying this code to the model problem are described. Furthermore, additional modifications that can be made to the code to improve its efficiency and extend its applicability to more general propagation models are discussed. In the second part of this report, the general situation of the coupled acoustic/elastic wave equation in two and three dimensions is considered. For example, this may correspond to an ocean environment in which there is ice on the surface as well as an irregularly shaped bottom structure. Finite difference and finite element methods for solving both the time harmonic and time dependent models are discussed. Various issues are considered that are important in determining the size of the problem that can be adequately treated. This includes the computer power as well as the mathematical and modeling techniques available. (Author).

Book excerpt: Underwater Acoustic Modeling and Simulation, Fourth Edition continues to provide the most authoritative overview of currently available propagation, noise, reverberation, and sonar-performance models. This fourth edition of a bestseller discusses the fundamental processes involved in simulating the performance of underwater acoustic systems and emphasizes the importance of applying the proper modeling resources to simulate the behavior of sound in virtual ocean environments. New to the Fourth Edition Extensive new material that addresses recent advances in inverse techniques and marine-mammal protection Problem sets in each chapter Updated and expanded inventories of available models Designed for readers with an understanding of underwater acoustics but who are unfamiliar with the various aspects of modeling, the book includes sufficient mathematical derivations to demonstrate model formulations and provides guidelines for selecting and using the models. Examples of each type of model illustrate model formulations, model assumptions, and algorithm efficiency. Simulation case studies are also included to demonstrate practical applications. Providing a thorough source of information on modeling resources, this book examines the translation of our physical understanding of sound in the sea into mathematical models that simulate acoustic propagation, noise, and reverberation in the ocean. The text shows how these models are used to predict and diagnose the performance of complex sonar systems operating in the undersea environment.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes the physics of fully three-dimensional low frequency acoustic interaction with internal waves, bottom sediment waves and surface swell waves that are often observed in shallow waters and on continental slopes. A simple idealized model of the ocean waveguide is used to analytically study the properties of acoustic normal modes and their perturbations due to waves of each type. The combined approach of a semi-quantitative study based on the geometrical acoustics approximation and on fully three-dimensional coupled mode numerical modeling is used to examine the azimuthal dependence of sound wave horizontal reflection from, transmission through and ducting between straight parallel waves of each type. The impact of the natural crossings of nonlinear internal waves on horizontally ducted sound energy is studied theoretically and modeled numerically using a three-dimensional parabolic equation acoustic propagation code. A realistic sea surface elevation is synthesized from the directional spectrum of long swells and used for three-dimensional numerical modeling of acoustic propagation. As a result, considerable normal mode amplitude scintillations were observed and shown to be strongly dependent on horizontal azimuth, range and mode number. Full field numerical modeling of low frequency sound propagation through large sand waves located on a sloped bottom was performed using the high resolution bathymetry of the mouth of San Francisco Bay. Very strong acoustic ducting is shown to steer acoustic energy beams along the sand wave's curved crests.
