Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inductive plasmas are simulated by using a one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation including Monte Carlo collision techniques (pic/mcc). To model inductive heating, a non-uniform radio-frequency (rf) electric field, perpendicular to the electron motion is included into the classical particle-in-cell scheme. The inductive plasma pic simulation is used to confirm recent experimental results that electric double layers can form in current-free plasmas. These results differ from previous experimental or simulation systems where the double layers are driven by a current or by imposed potential differences. The formation of a super-sonic ion beam, resulting from the ions accelerated through the potential drop of the double layer and predicted by the pic simulation is confirmed with nonperturbative laser-induced fluorescence measurements of ion flow. It is shown that at low pressure, where the electron mean free path is of the order of, or greater than the system length, the electron energy distribution function (eedf) is close to Maxwellian, except for its tail which is depleted at energies higher than the plasma potential. Evidence supporting that this depletion is mostly due to the high-energy electrons escaping to the walls is given. A new hybrid simulation scheme (particle ions and Boltzmann/particle electrons), accounting for non-Maxwellian eedf and self-consistently simulating low-pressure high-density plasmas at low computational cost is proposed. Results obtained with the 'improved' hybrid model are in much better agreement with the full pic simulation than the classical non self-consistent hybrid model. This model is used to simulate electronegative plasmas and to provide evidence supporting the fact that propagating double layers may spontaneously form in electronegative plasmas. It is shown that critical parameters of the simulation were very much aligned with critical parameters of the experiment."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical Simulations of Physical and Engineering Process is an edited book divided into two parts. Part I devoted to Physical Processes contains 14 chapters, whereas Part II titled Engineering Processes has 13 contributions. The book handles the recent research devoted to numerical simulations of physical and engineering systems. It can be treated as a bridge linking various numerical approaches of two closely inter-related branches of science, i.e. physics and engineering. Since the numerical simulations play a key role in both theoretical and application oriented research, professional reference books are highly needed by pure research scientists, applied mathematicians, engineers as well post-graduate students. In other words, it is expected that the book will serve as an effective tool in training the mentioned groups of researchers and beyond.
Book Synopsis Numerical modelling of low temperature plasma by : Craig Stewart MacLachlan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this thesis is to gain a better understanding of basic physical processes occurring in low temperature plasmas. This is achieved by applying both analytic and numerical models. Low temperature plasmas are found in both technological and astrophysical contexts. Three different situations are investigated: an instability in electronegative plasmas; electron avalanches during plasma initiation; and a phenomenon called the Critical Ionisation Velocity interaction. Industrial plasma discharges with electronegative gases are found to be unstable in certain conditions. Fluctuations in light emission, particle number densities and potential are observed. The instability has been reproduced in a variety of experiments. Reports from the experiments are discussed to characterise the key features of the instability. An, as yet un-considered, physical process that could explain the instability is introduced. The instability relies on the plasma s transparency to the electric field. This mechanism is investigated using simple zero-dimensional numerical and analytic models. The results from the models are compared to experimental results. The calculated frequencies are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. This shows that the instability mechanism described here is relevant. For the remaining two problems a three-dimensional particle model is constructed. This model calculates the trajectories of each individual particle. The potential field is solved self-consistently on a computational mesh. Poisson s equation is solved using a Multigrid technique. This iterative solution method uses many grids, of different resolutions, to smooth the error on all spatial scales. The mathematical foundation and details of the components of the Multigrid method are presented. Several test cases where analytic solutions of Poisson s equation exist are used to determine the accuracy of the solver. The implemented solver is found to be both efficient and accurate. Collisions are vitally important to the evolution of plasmas. The chemistry resulting from collisions is the reason why plasmas are so useful in technological applications. Electron collisions are included in the particle model using a Monte-Carlo technique. A basic method is given and several improvements are described. The most efficient combination of improvements is determined through a series of test cases. The error resulting from the collision selection process is characterised. Technological plasmas are formed from the electrical breakdown of a neutral gas. At atmospheric pressure the breakdown occurs as an electron avalanche. The particle model is used to simulate the nanosecond evolution of the avalanche from a single electron-ion pair. Special attention is paid to the inelastic collisions and the creation of metastables. The inelastic losses are used to estimate the photon emission from the electron avalanche. The Critical Ionisation Velocity phenomena is investigated using the particle model. When a neutral gas streams across a magnetised plasma the ionisation rate increases rapidly if the speed of the neutrals exceeds a critical value. Collisions between neutrals and positive ions create pockets of unbalanced negative charge. Electrons in these pockets are accelerated by their potential field and can reach energies capable of ionisation. The evolution of such an electron overdensity is simulated and their energy gain under different density and magnetic field conditions is calculated. The results from the simulation may explain the discrepancy between laboratory and space experiments.

Book Synopsis Numerical Simulation of Plasmas by : Юрий Николаевич Днестровский
Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Plasmas written by Юрий Николаевич Днестровский and published by Springer. This book was released on 1986-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to mathematical modeling of tokamak plasma. Since the appearance in 1982 of the first edition (in Russian), a considerable amount of experimental and theoretical material on tokamak research has been accumu lated. The new-generation devices, viz. , TFTR, JET and JT-60 were put into operation. The first experiments on these units have confirmed the correctness of the basic physical concepts underlying their construction. Experiments on plasma heating with the help of neutral beams and high-frequency (HF) waves on previous generation devices made it possible to obtain high-P plasmas. The number of "medium-size" tokamaks in operation has increased. New experi mental results and advances in the theory have led to more complicated and perfected models of high-temperature plasma. Rapid progress in computer hardware and software has played an important role in the further development of mathematical modeling. While preparing the English edition of the book, we have revised the text considerably. Several new models which have undergone significant advance ment in recent years are described. A section devoted to models of RF (radio frequency) current drive has been added to Chap. 2. The reduced magneto hydrodynamic (MHD) equations for high-P plasma are now considered in detail in Chap. 3. Chapter 4 contains the latest results on anomalous thermal conductivity, diffusion coefficient and pinching. Two new sections are added to Chap. 5.

Book Synopsis Electron Kinetics and Applications of Glow Discharges by : Uwe Kortshagen
Download or read book Electron Kinetics and Applications of Glow Discharges written by Uwe Kortshagen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book resulted from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on “Electron Kinetics and Applications of Glow Discharges,” held in St. Petersburg, Russia, on May 19-23, 1997. Glow discharges have found widespread applications in many technological processes from the manufacture of semiconductors, to recent developments in na- technology, to the traditional fields of gas lasers, and discharge lamps. Consequently, the interest in the physics of glow discharges has experienced yet another resurgence of interest. While the non-equilibrium character of glow discharges is widely accepted, the opinion still prevails that the main features can be captured by fluid models, and that kinetic treatments are only required for the understanding of subtle details. The erroneousness of this belief is demonstrated by the failure of fluid models to describe many basic features of glow discharges such as, for instance, electrode phenomena, striations, and collisionless heating effects. An adequate description of glow discharges thus has to be of kinetic nature.
