Book excerpt: Challenging problems involvrllg jet and plume phenomena are common to many areas of fundamental and applied scientific research, and an understanding of plume and jet behaviour is essential in many geophysical and industrial contexts. For example, in the field of meteorology, where pollutant dispersal takes place by means of atmospheric jets and plumes formed either naturally under conditions of convectively-driven flow in the atmospheric boundary layer, or anthropogenically by the release of pollutants from tall chimneys. In other fields of geophysics, buoyant plumes and jets are known to play important roles in oceanic mixing processes, both at the relatively large scale (as in deep water formation by convective sinking) and at the relatively small scale (as with plume formation beneath ice leads, for example). In the industrial context, the performances of many engineering systems are determined primarily by the behaviour of buoyant plumes and jets. For example, (i) in sea outfalls, where either sewage or thermal effluents are discharged into marine and/or freshwater environments, (ii) in solar ponds, where buoyant jets are released under density interfaces, (iii) in buildings, where thermally-generated plumes affect the air quality and ventilation properties of architectural environments, (iv) in rotating machinery where fluid jet~ are used for cooling purposes, and (v) in long road and rail tunnels, where safety and ventilation prcedures rely upon an understanding of the behaviour of buoyant jets. In many other engineering and oceanographic contexts, the properties of jets and plumes are of great importance.

The particle image velocimetry (PIV) and laserinduced fluorescence (LIF) techniques are developed to measure two-dimensional velocity and concentration fields of multiphase plumes. The developed measurement techniques are applied to bubble plumes in different ambient conditions. The problems and errors in the two-phase PIV application to a bubble plume case are addressed through a comparative study between the optical separation method using fluorescent particles and a new phase separation method using vector postprocessing. The study shows that the new algorithm predicts well the instantaneous and time-averaged velocity profiles and has errors comparable to those for image masking techniques. The phase separation method developed in the previous section is applied to study the mean flow characteristics of a bubble plume in quiescent and unstratified condition. The entrainment coefficients representing the mixing properties of a bubble plume are calculated to lie between 0.08 near the plume source and 0.05 in the upper region, and to depend on the non-dimensional quantity us/(B/z)1/3, where us is the bubble slip velocity, B is the initial buoyancy flux, and z is the height from the diffuser. Further, the LIF technique is investigated to measure the scalar concentration field around a bubble plume in quiescent, unstratified condition. This new application to bubble plumes accounts for light scattering by bubbles using an attenuation coef- ficient that is proportional to the local void fraction. Measured scalar concentration fields show similar trend in concentration fluctuation to turbulent plume cases. Finally, the velocity and concentration field measurements using the developed two-phase PIV and LIF methods are applied for a bubble plume in a density-stratified ambient. The turbulent flow characteristics induced by a bubble plume in a stratified ambient water are studied. The plume fluctuation frequency is measured as about 0.1 Hz and compares well to plume wandering frequency measured in unstratified plume cases.

Book excerpt: With major implications for applied physics, engineering, and the natural and social sciences, the rapidly growing area of environmental fluid dynamics focuses on the interactions of human activities, environment, and fluid motion. A landmark for the field, this two-volume handbook presents the basic principles, fundamental flow processes, modeling techniques, and measurement methods used in the field, along with critical discussions of environmental sustainability related to engineering aspects. The first volume provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals, and the second volume explores the interactions between engineered structures and natural flows.

Book excerpt: The Science & Applications of Heat and Mass Transfer: Reports, Reviews, & Computer Programs, Volume 6: Turbulent Buoyant Jets and Plumes focuses on the formation, properties, characteristics, and reactions of turbulent jets and plumes. The selection first offers information on the mechanics of turbulent buoyant jets and plumes and turbulent buoyant jets in shallow fluid layers. Discussions focus on submerged buoyant jets into shallow fluid, horizontal surface or interface jets into shallow layers, fundamental considerations, and turbulent buoyant jets (forced plumes). The manuscript then examines a turbulence model for buoyant flows and its application to vertical buoyant jets, including mathematical model, calculation of vertical buoyant jets, and explanation of velocity and temperature spreading in pure jets and pure plumes. The publication is a dependable reference for scientists and readers interested in turbulent buoyant jets and plumes.

Book excerpt: Flows where a narrow body of fluid, carried by initial momentum or buoyancy, entrains an ambient fluid are common in the environment. Volcanoes, smoke exiting a chimney or rising from a forest fire, tornadoes and deep water oil spills are just a few examples. If the main driving force is momentum we term such a flow a jet. On the other hand, if the main driving force is buoyancy we typically refer to the flow as a plume. Perhaps more common, initial momentum and buoyancy are both present in which case we can refer to the flow as either a buoyant jet or a forced plume. Forced plumes can be either single phase, where buoyancy is caused by either a difference in temperature or some other scalar phenomenon, or multiphase where buoyancy is due to the injection of particles, bubbles or drops of material other than the ambient fluid into the flow. In this study single and multiphase jets and plumes will be examined. A laminar study will be presented which examines the effect of the addition of a small amount of nonzero angular momentum to jets and plumes. The results of direct numerical simulations of a pure jet, a pure plume and a forced plume, in the turbulent, moderate Reynolds number regime are presented and compared. Each simulation was run long enough so that time averaged third order statistics converged, allowing each term of the turbulent kinetic energy equation and Reynolds stress transport equations to be calculated directly. The results of laboratory experiments of a pure jet and multiphase plume, conducted at Ecole Nationale Superieure De Mecanique et D'Aerotechnique (ENSMA) located in Poitiers, France will be presented. Preliminary results of multiphase plume simulations using the Equilibrium-Eulerian technique will be discussed.

Book excerpt: Over the last two decades environmental hydraulics as an academic discipline has expanded considerably, caused by growing concerns over water environmental issues associated with pollution and water balance problems on regional and global scale. These issues require a thorough understanding of processes related to environmental flows and transport
