Book excerpt: At close spacing the rotor bow shock is actually chopped by the stator trailing edge forming a pressure wave on the upper surface of the stator that propagates upstream until it weakens. In the reference frame relative to this pressure wave, the flow is supersonic and a moving shock wave exists that produces an entropy rise. The lower efficiency, pressure ratio, and mass flow rate measured at close spacing is a result of this extra loss. The magnitude of loss production is affected by the strength of the bow shock at the location it interacts with the trailing edge of the stator. Furthermore, the more blades present in the stator the more loss producing interactions take place. At far spacing the rotor bow shock has degenerated into a bow wave where it interacts with the stator trailing edge and is not chopped, therefore no pressure wave forms on the wake generator upper surface.

Book excerpt: Iv In this thesis, numerical solutions of a 2D stator compressor cascade at a given inlet Mach number (0.7) and four values of incidence (49°, 51°, 53° and 55°) are obtained. Reynolds averaged, thin layer, compressible Navier Stokes equations are solved. Different grid types have been generated. Finite differencing approach and LU - ADI splitting technique are used. Three block parallel Euler and Navier Stokes solutions are compared with the experimental results. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is used in the turbulent predictions and boundary layer comparisons and numerical results are in good agreement with the experiment. On the last part of the study, a rotor wake in the inlet flow has been introduced in the steady and unsteady analyses. The influence of this wake and the wake location in the inlet flow, to the total force and pressure is presented. The results have been showed that there is a relationship between the wake position and the incidence value of the case.

Download or read book Rotor-Stator Interaction in Radial Turbomachines written by Giovanna Cavazzini and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction between rotating and stationary parts affects the flow field inside both components, modifying the machine performance in terms of operating stability, structural vibrations, noise and pressure pulsations. The aim of this book is to improve the understanding of the rotor-stator interaction phenomena with an extensive in-depth investigation of their characteristics, origin, development and effects on the machine performance. An unusual acoustical approach, aimed at identifying a possible connection between noise emissions and inner fluid-dynamics, was proposed and combined with a PIV experimental analysis in order to study the unsteady flow phenomena developing inside the pump vaned diffuser. These analysis, coupled with a numerical analysis on the same turbomachine, allowed to analyze in-depth the effects of the rotor-stator interaction on the machine flow field and hence on its performance.

Book Synopsis Numerical Investigation on the Effects of Self-excited Tip Flow Unsteadiness and Blade Row Interactions on the Performance Predictions of Low Speed and Transonic Compressor Rotors by : Daniel H. Lee

Lee and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact blade row interactions can have on the performance of compressor rotors has been well documented. It is also well known that rotor tip clearance flows can have a large effect on compressor performance and stall margin and recent research has shown that tip leakage flows can exhibit self-excited unsteadiness at near stall conditions. However, the impact of tip leakage flow on the performance and operating range of a compressor rotor, relative to other important flow features such as upstream stator wakes or downstream potential effects, has not been explored. To this end, a numerical investigation has been conducted to determine the effects of self-excited tip flow unsteadiness, upstream stator wakes, and downstream blade row interactions on the performance prediction of low speed and transonic compressor rotors. Calculations included a single blade-row rotor configuration as well as two multi-blade row configurations: one where the rotor was modeled with an upstream stator and a second where the rotor was modeled with a downstream stator. Steady-state and time accurate calculations were performed using a RANS solver and the results were compared with detailed experimental data obtained in the GE Low Speed Research Compressor and the Notre Dame Transonic Rig at several operating conditions including near stall. Differences in the performance predictions between the three configurations were then used to determine the effect of the upstream stator wakes and the downstream blade row interactions. Results obtained show that for both the low speed and transonic research compressors used in this investigation time-accurate RANS analysis is necessary to accurately predict the stalling character of the rotor. Additionally, for the first time it is demonstrated that capturing the unsteady tip flow can have a larger impact on rotor performance predictions than adjacent blade row interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel CFD 2000, the Twelfth in an International series of meetings featuring computational fluid dynamics research on parallel computers, was held May 22-25, 2000 in Trondheim, Norway.Following the trend of the past conferences, areas such as numerical schemes and algorithms, tools and environments, load balancing, as well as interdisciplinary topics and various kinds of industrial applications were all well represented in the work presented. In addition, for the first time in the Parallel CFD conference series, the organizing committee chose to draw special attention to certain subject areas by organizing a number of special sessions. We feel the emphasis of the papers presented at the conference reflect the direction of the research within parallel CFD at the beginning of the new millennium. It seems to be a clear tendency towards increased industrial exploitation of parallel CFD. Several presentations also demonstrated how new insight is being achieved from complex simulations, and how powerful parallel computers now make it possible to use CFD within a broader interdisciplinary setting.Obviously, successful application of parallel CFD still rests on the underlying fundamental principles. Therefore, numerical algorithms, development tools, and parallelization techniques are still as important as when parallel CFD was in is infancy. Furthermore, the novel concepts of affordable parallel computing as well as metacomputing show that exciting developments are still taking place. As is often pointed out however, the real power of parallel CFD comes from the combination of all the disciplines involved: Physics, mathematics, and computer science. This is probably one of the principal reasons for the continued popularity of the Parallel CFD Conferences series, as well as the inspiration behind much of the excellent work carried out on the subject. We hope that the papers in this book, both on an individual basis and as a whole, will contribute to that inspiration. Further details of Parallel CFD'99, as well as other conferences in this series, are available at http://www.parcfd.org

Download or read book A Numerical Study of a Transonic Compressor Rotor at Large Tip Clearance written by Louise Florence Merz and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and numerical investigations have shown that flow in the tip region of high-speed, low aspect ratio, transonic compressors is detrimental to aerodynamic efficiency and operating range. Various computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models were compared to determine their influence on off-design predictions and tip flow structures. The models compared were: 1) steady isolated rotor, 2) unsteady isolated rotor, 3) unsteady stage. The?-e and?-? turbulence models were also compared. The near stall predictions were oscillatory in all cases. The largest variation in numerical results occurred due to choice of turbulence model. The inability to obtain a converged steady-state solution at low flow rates indicates the significance of an unsteady phenomenon present in the flow field indicating the need for unsteady flow simulations at off-design conditions. The current investigation has shown that unsteady isolated rotor simulations provide the most practical balance of accuracy in prediction and computational cost.
