Book excerpt: Deposition of particles on a wall plays a significant role in fluid-solid processes such as inclusions recovery from liquid steel in ladle furnace, that controls inclusion cleanliness upstream from solidification. The aim of this work is to study the turbulent deposition and capture of particles on a wall, in a situation where turbulence in the boundary layer originates both from wall shear and from agitation in the external flow. In a ladle furnace, such an agitation would result from bubble injection. A framework for simulations at mesoscopic scale in which particles are represented as points but the turbulence is fully resolved has been developped using an in-house solver, where a Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) solves flow dynamics and linear isotropic forcing generates artificial turbulence. Lagrangian Particle Tracking (LPT) is used to achieve one way coupling between particle motions and turbulent flow. These numerical methods were applied to Direct Numerical simulation (DNS) of a fully developed turbulent boundary layer in which particles smaller than the Kolmogorov length scale are introduced. The deposition mechanisms in aerosol conditions have been analyzed and quantified into a statistical law for deposition velocity in terms of Stokes number, and validated against data from the literature. Such simulations have provided a better understanding of deposition and capture mechanisms, depending on the turbulent flow in a wall boundary layer and on particle physical properties. Also, preliminary simulations in hydrosol conditions that match actual ladle operation have shown that the framework developed in this work can be applied to investigate inclusion behavior in secondary steel-making although statistical analysis in this work focused on aerosols.

Book excerpt: The motivation for the present work is to investigate particle-laden turbulent flows using accurate numerical simulations. In the present work, the carrier phase is modeled using direct numerical simulations (DNS) and the particles are tracked in a Lagrangian sense. Investigations of both one-way and two-way coupled particulate flows in homogeneous isotropic turbulence have been carried out. The phenomenon of interest in one-way coupled simulations is preferential accumulation, which refers to the tendency of heavy particles in isotropic turbulence to collect in regions of high strain and low vorticity. Several measures and mechanisms of accumulation have been reported in the literature often showing conflicting scaling with particle and fluid parameters. In the present study, accumulation has been quantified using several indicators to give a unified picture. The present work addresses the scaling of preferential accumulation with Reynolds number and suggests that while the spacing between particle clusters does exhibit a dependence on Reynolds number, the structure of particle clusters as viewed by individual particles shows little dependence on Reynolds number. The effect of adding a gravitational settling force on the particles has also been explored. While the gravity force tends to homogenize the particle distribution at low Stokes numbers, at high Stokes numbers it tends to arrange the originally random distribution into streaks in the direction of gravity. The ability of the Lorentz force to limit preferential accumulation has been the focus of the next part of the study. Charges are placed on particles to produce an electric field when the particles are inhomogeneously distributed. The electric field and thereby the Lorentz force tend to homogenize the particle distribution. It is interesting to note that the particle distribution attains a stationary state determined by the total amount of charge contained in the domain. It is demonstrated that in the presence of gravity, less amount of charge is required to homogenise particle distribution. Good agreement is observed for simulations of settling charged particles with experimental work. The modification of carrier phase turbulence by particles is studied formono-sized particles. The non-uniform modification of the fluid energy spectrum by particles has been demonstrated. It is seen that there is an increase in energy at high wave numbers for microparticles (St k

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of transverse strain on an initially two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer are studied in a direct numerical simulation of a planar channel flow with impulsively started transverse pressure gradient. Consistent with experiments in three-dimensional boundary layers, the simulation shows a decrease in the Reynolds shear stress with increasing transverse strain. Also, the directions of the Reynolds shear stress vector and the mean velocity gradient vector were found to differ. In addition, the simulation shows a drop in the turbulent kinetic energy. Terms in the Reynolds stress transport equations were computed. The balances indicate that the decrease in turbulent kinetic energy is a result of a decrease in turbulence production, along with an increase in turbulent dissipation. The effects of the transverse pressure gradient on the instantaneous flow structures were investigated.

Book excerpt: Turbulent boundary layer separation was studied numerically using a special code to integrate the model equations for transient two-dimensional turbulent flow. For three calculations, separation was induced by interaction of a boundary layer with oblique shock waves; for three others, separation was caused by flow into the compression corner formed by an adiabatic flat-plate and ramp. In every case the free-stream Mach number was 2.96, the Reynolds number based on boundary layer thickness just upstream of the interaction region ranged from 1/4 to 1 million, and the static pressure rose by a factor of either 3.7 or 5.1.

Book excerpt: Experimental investigation in turbulent boundary layer flows represents one of the canonical geometries of wall bounded shear flows. Utmost relevance of such experiments, however, is applied in the engineering applications in aerospace and marine industries. In particular, continuous effort is being imparted to explore the underlying physics of the flow in order to develop models for numerical tools and to achieve flow control. Flow control experiments have been widely investigated since 1930's. Several flow control technique has been explored and have shown potential benefit. But the choice of control technique depends largely on the boundary condition and the type of application. Hence, friction drag of subsonic transport aircraft is intended to be reduced within the scope of this Ph. D. topic. Therefore, application of active control method such as microblowing effect in the incompressible, zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer was investigated. A series of experiments have been performed in two different wind tunnel facilities. Wind tunnel from Department of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics (LAS) was used for the measurements for moderate Reynolds number range in co-operation with the wind tunnel from Laboratoire de M ́ecanique de Feiret Lille for large Reynolds number range. Measurements are conducted with the help of state-of-the-art techniques such as Laser Doppler Anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry and electronic pressure sensors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted on a turbulent boundary layer near a smooth surface with pressure gradients sufficient to cause flow separation. The Reynolds number was high, but speeds were entirely within the incompressible flow range. The investigation consisted of measurements of mean flow, three components of turbulence intensity, turbulent shearing stress, and correlations between two fluctuation components at a point and between the same component at different points. Results are given in the form of tables and graphs. The discussion deals first with separation, and then with the more fundamental question of basic concepts of turbulent flow.
