Book excerpt: Natural convective heat transfer from flat plates and short cylinders inclined at an angle to the vertical in laminar and transition flow regions with isothermal or constant heat flux conditions have been numerically and experimentally studied. When the width of the plate is relatively small compared to its height, i.e., the plate is narrow, the heat transfer rate can be considerably greater than that predicted by these two-dimensional flow results. When the narrow plate is inclined to the vertical, pressure changes normal to the plate surface arise and these pressure changes can alter the nature and the magnitude of the edge effects. When two narrow inclined rectangular flat plates of the same size separated vertically or horizontally, the flow interaction between these heated plates can have a significant effect on the heat transfer. When relatively small square and circular cylinders with exposed top surfaces inclined to the vertical are used, the interaction of the flow over the surfaces that make up the cylinder and inclination angle have, in general, a considerable effect on the magnitude of the mean heat transfer rate and on the nature of the flow over the cylinder surfaces. In the present numerical studies it has been assumed that the fluid properties are constant except for the density change with temperature which gives rise to the buoyancy forces, this having been treated using the Boussinesq approach. The numerical solution was obtained by numerically solving the full three-dimensional form of the governing equations, these equations being written in dimensionless form. The solution was obtained using a commercial CFD code, FLUENT. Results were only obtained for a Prandtl number of 0.7; this being approximately the value of air. In the experimental studies, the average heat transfer rates from cylinders were determined by the transient method, which involves heating the model and then measuring its temperature-time variation while it cools. The average heat transfer rates from the flat plates were determined using a steady state method, which basically involved electrically heating the plate. The tests were carried out inside a large enclosure.

Book excerpt: Natural Convective Heat Transfer from Short Inclined Cylinders examines a heat transfer situation of significant, practical importance not adequately dealt with in existing textbooks or in any widely available review papers. Specifically, the book introduces the reader to recent studies of natural convection from short cylinders mounted on a flat insulated base where there is an “exposed” upper surface. The author considers the effects of the cylinder cross-sectional shape, the cylinder inclination angle, and the length-to-cross sectional size of the cylinder. Both numerical and experimental studies are discussed and correlation equations based on the results of these studies are reviewed. This book is ideal for professionals involved with thermal management and related systems, researchers, and graduate students in the field of natural convective heat transfer, instructors in graduate level courses in convective heat transfer.

Book excerpt: "The experimental investigation was conducted to determine temperature distribution and convective heat transfer coefficients in terms of Nusselt number for an inclined heated flat plate in air. The heated surface of the aluminum flat plate was set facing upward and moved through seven positions from the vertical to the horizontal. The investigation shows that the local Nusselt number can be predicted by Kiekus's solution within 12 per cent for inclination angles from the vertical through 75° from the vertical. In the case of the vertical position, Eckert's solution gives a better prediction. For the horizontal position the results show good agreement with the equation which is recommended by McAdams, with 8 per cent"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermofluids, while a relatively modern term, is applied to the well-established field of thermal sciences, which is comprised of various intertwined disciplines. Thus mass, momentum, and heat transfer constitute the fundamentals of th- mofluids. This book discusses thermofluids in the context of thermodynamics, single- and two-phase flow, as well as heat transfer associated with single- and two-phase flows. Traditionally, the field of thermal sciences is taught in univer- ties by requiring students to study engineering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, in that order. In graduate school, these topics are discussed at more advanced levels. In recent years, however, there have been attempts to in- grate these topics through a unified approach. This approach makes sense as thermal design of widely varied systems ranging from hair dryers to semicond- tor chips to jet engines to nuclear power plants is based on the conservation eq- tions of mass, momentum, angular momentum, energy, and the second law of thermodynamics. While integrating these topics has recently gained popularity, it is hardly a new approach. For example, Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot in Transport Phenomena, Rohsenow and Choi in Heat, Mass, and Momentum Transfer, El- Wakil, in Nuclear Heat Transport, and Todreas and Kazimi in Nuclear Systems have pursued a similar approach. These books, however, have been designed for advanced graduate level courses. More recently, undergraduate books using an - tegral approach are appearing.

Modeling and Approximation in Heat Transfer describes the approach to engineering solutions through simplified modeling of the most important physical features and approximating their behavior. Systematic discussion of how modeling and associated synthesis can be carried out is included - in engineering practice, these steps very often precede mathematical analysis or the need for precise results.

Al-Alusi and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convection heat transfer was experimentally investigated for two different geometries. One case had three horizontal cylinders in a vertical plane placed between two vertical walls. The second case had three horizontal cylinders in a vertical plane with only one vertical wall. Several different cylinder center-tocenter spacings were investigated. The wall spacings for the two wall and single wall cases were also varied. The cylinders were placed in a still air medium at atmospheric pressure and were maintained at a constant heat flux. The modified Rayleigh number, based on the diameter of the cylinders, ranged from 6.2 x 104 to 1.2 x 106. A scale analysis was performed to predict the relationship between the Nusselt number and the modified Rayleigh number. A standard finite-difference code was employed to show the temperature distribution and velocity vectors distribution around the cylinders. The results showed that there was a maximum heat transfer from each cylinder at a specific wall-array spacing and a specific center-to-center spacing. Comparisons of heat transfer results with a single free cylinder and a free array of horizontal cylinders were made and discussed. Empirical equations were proposed to predict the effects of the experimental parameters on the heat transfer as expressed by the average Nusselt number of each cylinder or the average Nusselt number of the whole array. Flow visualization was accomplished using laser sheets. The resulting studies showed that the presence of a single wall or the asymmetrical placement of the array between the two walls eliminated the presence of the vortices in the spaces between the cylinders and displaced the stagnation points. The asymmetrical placement of the array between two walls created a reversed current between the two walls.
