Book excerpt: The main goal of this research was to gain an in-depth understanding of the behavior of buried large-diameter pipes with controlled low-strength material (CLSM). Design equations were developed based on extensive parametric studies that aimed for an optimized design for designers in industry. Both experimental and numerical methods were espoused in the investigating procedure. The pipe-soil structure characteristics of the experimental analysis were: (a) steel pipe diameter of 108 in., (b) steel pipe thickness of 0.47 in., (c) mortar liner applied at the inner surface of the pipe with thickness of 0.5 +1/6 in., (d) CLSM applied around the pipe at a depth of 70% of the pipe's diameter, (e) selected compacted soil applied at a depth of pipe's diameter, and (f) compacted native soil with overall depth of 6 ft. applied until the ground level. The staged construction method was applied, which means that the application of each part was done in a specific order. The stages of the construction were: (a) pipe placement, (b) CLSM applied at a depth of 30% of pipe's diameter (OD), (c) CLSM applied at a depth of 70% OD, (d) compacted select fill layer applied 1 ft. above the pipe's crown, and (e) consecutive compacted soil layers of 12 in. depth until the ground level.Experimental measurements were conducted at the site to measure the deflection of the pipe during the construction stages. Two methods were applied: MOP-119 and video laser profiler (VLP) method. The MOP-119 is a method based on the ASCE Committee on Buried Flexible (Steel) Pipe Load Stability Criteria and Design of the Pipeline Division. The laser profiler method is based on a laser ring projected at the inner surface of the pipe. Due to physical obstacles inside the pipe, for this research, the VLP was modified to the photo laser profiler (PLP) method to bypass the issues raised. A Finite Element Model (FEM) was developed to mimic the experimental conditions of the pipe tested. The geometrical dimensions, boundary conditions, material properties, and construction stages were all applied based on the site conditions. A model-change algorithm was used for an accurate representation of the staged construction method. Geometry, material, and contact nonlinearities were implemented. A Newton-Raphson algorithm was used for the model convergence. Overall, 28 sections were analyzed with the FEA, and the results for the deflection at springline and invert were compared with the experimental data. The material properties of the CLSM were investigated in the Civil Engineering Laboratory (CELB) at the University of Texas at Arlington. Compression, flexure, and triaxial material tests were conducted based on ASTM D4832, C31, and D 4767, respectively. A material law was developed based on the test results. Unique design equations were developed for large-diameter steel pipes with CSLM. A total of 3500 models were run, and a regression analysis was conducted. The dependent variables were horizontal and vertical deflection, moment, thrust, and shear of the pipe; while the independent variables were pipe diameter, pipe thickness, CLSM layer height, backfill material used above the CLSM layer, trench width, and trench wall stiffness.

Book excerpt: Using finite element methods and field tests, an extensive study on selected steel pipes is devised for the Integrated Pipeline Project in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. The project integrates Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) existing pipelines to the Dallas system along 150 miles. Field test of buried pipes, monitoring the pipe in different trench conditions is extremely valuable in predicting the displacement of the pipe during construction stages and during its lifetime. The field instrumentation monitors the circular displacements and strains of a buried steel pipe with an outside diameter (O.D.) of 84 in. and 0.375 in. thickness in three different trench profiles using controlled low strength material. For the first case, the trench width is the O.D. plus 36 in., and CLSM is used as embedment up to 30% of the O.D. In the second case, the trench width is the O.D. plus 36 in., and CLSM is used as embedment up to 70% of the O.D. In the third case, the trench width is O.D. plus 18 in., and CSLM is used as embedment up to 70% of the O.D. From the CLSM to the top of the pipe, ordinary local soil is used and compacted to 95% standard proctor density. Approximately 5ft. of backfilling is added for all cases. For pipe structural monitoring, strain gages are attached inside and outside of the pipe to obtain the circumferential strain, and displacement transducers are installed to record both vertical and horizontal diameter displacement. The deflections of the steel pipes are effectively measured in each of the construction stages: the CLSM embedment, the soil compaction, and during the load of the 5ft. soil on top of the pipe. In addition, the buried pipes are monitored for long term deflection (around 350 days). The tests provide guidance for the finite element modeling and are an important study in predicting the structural performance of buried steel pipes. The finite element analysis developed is a three dimensional (3D) nonlinear finite element model of steel pipe coupled with CLSM and compacted soil. The finite element model consists of the pipe and soil interaction during the staged construction of embedment and backfill. The geometry of the model is created based on the pipe's undeformed shape. Due to the effect of the loads during staged construction (i.e. subsequent layers of soil being added as embedment and/or backfill), the geometry of the pipe distored for each layer of soil around it. The model also consideres the at rest lateral pressure and the lateral effect of soil compaction on the pipe-soil structure. Different trench conditions are modeled by varying in the in-situ soil stiffness for the trench wall, and trench width. The finite element model developed simulates the load-deformation results of a buried steel pipe in different trench conditions and was verified by the field test results. After developing the nonlinear finite element model for steel pipes and verifying the results with field test, the model can be used to predict pipe performance under varying backfill and loading conditions. All parameters that are modified in the models are part of the scope of the pipeline project, and are field situations that might be observed in the construction of the Integrated Pipeline.

Book excerpt: This study investigates the structural integrity of large diameter (108 inch) steel pipes with mortar lining embedded with Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) during installation. Field tests were carried out in the prove-out section of line J which is a 2 mile (3.21 km) section of an Integrated Pipeline network (IPL) that will ultimately run a length of 150 mile (241.4 km) from Lake Palestine to Lake Benbrook. The prove-out is a section of line J that was used for experimental research for the use of CLSM as an embedment material and calibrate Finite Element Method (FEM) model for the rest of the pipeline. The prove-out section is comprised of 11 pipes, varying in length from 24 ft. to 50 ft. (7.3-15.2 m), with a total length of 518 ft. (157.8 m). The project integrates existing Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) pipelines to Dallas systems to provide 350 million gallons per day (1.32 Billion liters per day) of raw water supplies to more than 1.8 million people in 11 counties in North Texas. Three methods were used to check for deflection measurements: Manuals and Reports on Engineering Practice No.119 (MOP-119) method, Laser Photo Profile and Laser Video Profile. The MOP-119 method is utilized from American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Buried Flexible Steel Pipe (2009). The deflections of the steel pipes were effectively measured in each of the installation stages. The installation stages considered for this research were pipe placement, CLSM embedment at 30% pipe diameter, CLSM embedment at 70% pipe diameter, and backfill with and without stulls. Forty-three (43) sections were measured using the MOP-119 and Laser Photo Profile methods (about 12 feet or 3.65 meters a section) per installation stage. The laser video profile method was run continuously on one site visit for the entire prove-out section. The MOP-119 method was compared to the Laser Photo Profile method while stulls were present in the pipeline and later with both the Laser Photo and Video Profile method when stulls were removed. For large diameter steel pipes with mortar lining the recommended limit for deflection is set at 2% of the pipes diameter according to American Water Works Association (AWWA M11). Material tests were conducted in the Civil Engineering Laboratory Building (CELB) to check for flexural and compressive strength of CLSM based on ASTM C78/C78M-10 (Standard Test Method for Flexural Strength of Concrete) and ASTM D4832-10 (Standard Test Method for Preparation and Testing of CLSM Test Cylinders). It was observed after processing the field measurement data that the MOP-119 method yielded a higher deflection limit than the Laser Photo Profile and Laser Video Profile methods which were within the deflection limit of two percent (2%) as per AWWA specification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A buried pipe was installed using controlled low strength material (CLSM) as backfill as part of a study of installation procedures for buried pipe. A laboratory evaluation of mix designs was undertaken prior to the field test to determine the suitability of the component materials and establish a mix with acceptable flow characteristics and a 28 day compressive strength of less than 1000 kPa (145 psi). The mix selected developed an average compressive strength of 334 kPa (48 psi) at 7 days and 600 kPa (87 psi) at 28 days, and Young's moduli of 120 MPa (17 ksi) at 7 days and 190 MPa (28 ksi) at 28 days. The field installation was in a trench with a width equal to the pipe outside diameter plus 600 mm. One length each of 900 mm nominal inside diameter concrete, corrugated steel and corrugated HDPE pipe was elevated on bags of gravel to allow the CLSM to flow under the pipe. The plastic and metal pipes were weighted with bags of gravel to minimize flotation. The CLSM was placed to the springline in two lifts, two hours apart. The metal pipe floated slightly while the second lift was being placed. Backfilling above the CLSM with a native clay commenced about 16 hours after installation of the CLSM. The CLSM provided excellent support for the pipe in especially hard to reach areas underneath the pipe. Pipe deflections were small and similar to those for the same pipe and high quality crushed stone backfill carefully placed and well compacted. Re-excavation of the installation about three weeks later showed that the CLSM backfill provided excellent support; however, excavation was difficult, even at that early age. A lowering of the target strength for the CLSM mix design to between 200 kPa and 400 kPa (30 psi and 60 psi) at 28 days is recommended for providing more excavatable backfill.
