Download or read book Naked Las Vegas written by Greg Friedler and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have always liked John Lennon's idea about violence being grotesque and nudity being beautiful."—Las Vegas cab driver Like Greg Friedler's three previous studies—Naked New York, Naked Los Angeles, and Naked London—where each subject appears first clothed and then without clothes, these seventy-five people both confirm and contradict our assumptions about those who live and work in Sin City. Color photographs echo the gaudy surface of the Strip, but these people—including waitresses, teachers, sex workers, businessmen, transsexuals, taxi drivers, mothers, and homeless men—dare to step outside their protective everyday facades.Unlike traditional nude photography, these portraits are devoid of erotic or sexual overtones. Friedler's work is a kind of anthropological survey. If clothing is a voluntary choice, unclothed we see people in an involuntary state—we see their bodies as we see their faces, unmasked. These images are at once deeply intimate and refreshingly matter-of-fact.

Book Synopsis The Naked Nude by : Frances Borzello
Download or read book The Naked Nude written by Frances Borzello and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2022-08-18 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism or imperfection. In this newly updated study, Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected nude of Kenneth Clarks classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form (1956), with todays depictions: raw, uncomfortable, both disturbing and intriguing. Grittier and more subtle, depicting variously gendered bodies, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time. Borzello explores the role of the nude in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists creating contemporary nudes. Her fascinating text is complemented by a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations. The story begins with a tale of life, death and resurrection an investigation into how and why the nude has survived and flourished in an art world that prematurely announced its demise. Subsequent chapters take a thematic approach, focusing in turn on Body art and Performance art, the new perspectives of women artists, the nude in painting, portraiture and sculpture and in its most extreme and graphic expressions that intentionally push the boundaries of both art and our comfort zone. The final chapter illustrates radical developments in art and culture over the last decade, focusing in particular on artworks by women, trans artists and artists of colour. Borzello links these works to their art-historical and political predecessors, demonstrating the continually unending capacity of the nude to disrupt traditional hierarchies and gender categories in life and art.

Download or read book Feeling Lucky written by Paul Franke and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monte Carlo and Las Vegas have become synonymous with casino gambling. Both destinations featured it as part of a broad variety of leisure and consumption opportunities that normalized games of chance and created emotional atmospheres that supported the hedonistic aspects of gambling. Urban spaces and architecture were carefully designed to enable a rapid growth of the casino industry and produce experiences on previous unimaginable scale. Feeling Lucky, is a “making of story,” about cities which acquired a strange and captivating allure of mystery around them. It is more than a mere descriptive account, however. Combining urban history, the history of consumption, and sociological approaches it presents a compelling comparative history of Monte Carlo and the Las Vegas Strip between the 1860s and 1970s. Paul Franke takes the reader on a journey from arriving at the cities, through the carefully planned urban environments and into the famous casinos. The analysis follows the paths contemporary gamblers would have taken, right to the gambling tables and to the shifting gambling practices across a century. Franke shows that casino entrepreneurs succeeded in producing and selling gambling experiences by controlling spaces, adapt leisure practices and appeal to specific markets. Gamblers on the other hand regarded Monte Carlo and Las Vegas as places to engage in games of chance that would allow them to preserve their political, cultural, and moral identities.
