Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in technology have greatly impacted upon the practice of nuclear medicine in general, and the approach to hepatobiliary diseases in particular. Empha sis is now placed more on non-invasive functional imaging with quantification, a feature unique to nuclear medicine and not available from any other competing diag nostic imaging modality. By providing a measure of severity of disease, quantification aids not only in timing of therapy but also for testing whether or not the chosen therapy has achieved the intended goals and objectives. This is the first textbook of its kind in the new millennium on nuclear hepatology to fully integrate quantitative physiology with morphology in the diagnosis of hepatobiliary diseases. The conception of nuclear hepatology occurred in the late 1940s with the introduc tion of radiocolloids, whose rate of clearance from blood was used as a measure of hepatic blood flow. Radiocolloid imaging of the liver, introduced first in the mid 1950s, was the most popular nuclear medicine imaging procedure in the 1970s and early 1980s, accounting for nearly 50% of the total workload in many nuclear medicine departments.

Book excerpt: A Personal History of Nuclear Medicine is an account of how nuclear medicine developed, and its basic philosophy in the past, present and future. The book outlines the history of the development of nuclear medicine as experienced by the author and describes the hurdles that nuclear medicine has had to face, in view of the perception of risk of radiation. It also explains how nuclear medicine solves medical problems in clinical practice and how it has contributed to a new definition of disease. The book concludes with future projections of the likely developments in this area in the next 50 years. Target market: nuclear medicine professionals as well non-nuclear medicine physicians and the public

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, now in a revised and updated second edition, offers a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in orthopedic nuclear medicine, including the impressive recent advances in the field and the diagnosis of under-recognized conditions on the basis of their imaging patterns. The opening chapters acquaint the reader briefly with anatomic, physiologic, pathologic, and technical concepts crucial to a sound understanding of orthopedic nuclear medicine and its utilization in clinical practice. The imaging diagnosis of skeletal infections, trauma, vascular disorders, metabolic and neoplastic bone diseases, soft tissue calcifications, and joint disorders is then explained in detail. Two entirely new chapters, on bone marrow imaging and hybrid imaging of bone diseases, have been added to this edition. A separate chapter is devoted to the use of radionuclides for the treatment of bone and joint disorders. The book is richly illustrated and amply documents the effectiveness of nuclear medicine in diagnosing bone disease. It will prove invaluable to all with an interest in diagnostic and therapeutic orthopedics, including orthopedists, radiologists, rheumatologists, pediatricians, podiatrists, other clinicians, and all nuclear and molecular imaging professionals.

Book excerpt: This book, now in its fourth edition, aims to promote a deeper understanding of the scientific and clinical basis of nuclear medicine and the new directions in medical imaging. The new edition has been revised and updated significantly to reflect recent changes and to ensure that the contents are in line with likely future directions. In addition to that, chapters have been reorganized in order to simplify the contents and to increase the readability. The book starts by providing essential information on general pathophysiology, cell biology and biologic effects of ionizing radiation followed by the mechanisms of radiopharmaceutical localization in different tissues and cells. This is followed by a series of chapters that covers all relevant organ systems presenting the basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology and relating them to the clinical utilization of various scintigraphic modalities. The final chapter is devoted to the basis of therapeutic applications of nuclear medicine. The book will prove invaluable to all with an interest in the pathophysiologic basis of Nuclear Medicine, including nuclear medicine professionals, radiologists, surgeons, pediatricians and internal medicine physicians.

Both in vivo and in vitro techniques are included. The book was written by an international panel of authors, most, if not all, of whom are the pioneers of the techniques described. Their chapters reflect the universal views in the field of nuclear medicine and oncology. Clinical aspects and technical details are presented for both standard and new nuclear oncological techniques, including breast scintigraphy, receptor imaging, monoclonal antibodies and positron emission tomography. This information will therefore be helpful to those dealing with the diagnosis and therapy of cancer using radionuclides, including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, oncologic surgeons, nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists. Attention is devoted to potential areas of clinical research in nuclear oncology. Therapeutic use of radionuclides is emphasized.

Where before a 5-7 year period was taken for a general surgeon, after which the medic would take a 1 year residency then a fellowship, now they are looking at 3 years core surgery and then going straight to specialise, opening up the discipline to more people. The book is a valuable tool for those revising for board examinations and Fellowship examinations. The text, compiled by expert authors from the USA, Europe and Asia, provides an international perspective on the basic knowledge and clinical management.
