This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Energy Sciences, grade: 20 out of 20, University of St Andrews, course: Sustainable Development, language: English, abstract: In the face of growing concerns about climate change, the calls for a shift away from fossil fuels as the dominant source of the world's energy are becoming more pronounced. Ultimately, the goal is energy production without further pollution. One option that has been proposed as a possible alternative is nuclear energy. However, debates continue to rage, especially in the field of sustainable development, about the suitability of nuclear power to replace fossil fuels. Using France and Japan as case studies, this essay argues that in the quest for sustainable development, nuclear energy will solve more problems than it will create, and it must be embraced as a vital part of the energy mix going forward.

This book was released on 2002-09-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of a study of long-term perspectives for energy development of the world and its main regions, performed at the Siberian Energy Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Energy Systems Institute since 1998). The methodological approach, the 10-regional Global Energy Model (GEM-10R) of the world energy system, energy demand forecasts, data on energy resources and energy technologies, and results of calculations based on mathematical models are described. Particular attention is given to determination of energy requirements and peculiarities of its technological structure that are caused by mankind's necessary transition to sustainable development. Economic and ecological consequences of constraints on greenhouse gas emissions and scales of nuclear energy production, as well as assistance of developed countries to developing ones are investigated. Problems of cheap oil, gas and uranium resources depletion, fuel price growth, synthetic fuel production and new energy technology implementation are analysed. The book is intended for specialists in energy and economics, as well as students and postgraduate students of technical high schools and universities. ac

Book Synopsis Nuclear Power, Economic Development Discourse and the Environment by : Manu V. Mathai
Download or read book Nuclear Power, Economic Development Discourse and the Environment written by Manu V. Mathai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear power is often characterized as a "green technology." Technologies are rarely, if ever, socially isolated artefacts. Instead, they materially represent an embodiment of values and priorities. Nuclear power is no different. It is a product of a particular political economy and the question is whether that political economy can helpfully engage with the challenge of addressing the environmental crisis on a finite, inequitable and shared planet. For developing countries like India, who are presently making infrastructure investments which will have long legacies, it is imperative that these investments wrestle with such questions and prove themselves capable of sufficiency, greater equality and inclusiveness. This book offers a critique of civilian nuclear power as a green energy strategy for India and develops and proposes an alternative "synergy for sustainability." It situates nuclear power as a socio-technical infrastructure embodying a particular development discourse and practice of energy and economic development. The book reveals the political economy of this arrangement and examines the latter’s ability to respond to the environmental crisis. Manu V. Mathai argues that the existing overwhelmingly growth-focused, highly technology-centric approach for organizing economic activity is unsustainable and needs to be reformed. Within this imperative for change, nuclear power in India is found to be and is characterized as an "authoritarian technology." Based on this political economy critique the book proposes an alternative, a synergy of ideas from the fields of development economics, energy planning and science, technology and society studies.

Book Synopsis Energy, Policy, and the Environment by : Marja Järvelä
Download or read book Energy, Policy, and the Environment written by Marja Järvelä and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets the questions of energy and the environment in the North in the global context and further addresses historical developments, views on energy taxation and tariffs, and effects of EU energy policy. Climate change appears more frequently than ever on the top of global and national policy agendas. In the current situation traditional environmental concern and environmental policy may not suffice in the face of the global challenge as manifested by climate change and the depletion of fossil energy resources. But as new data comes to light, new energy policies and changes in economic structures are crucial for putting into action global climate policy. Crucial tasks in environmental policy are the sustainable utilisation of natural resources and the conservation of natural and human-made habitats. One of the areas of the world where this comes into play the most is in the Nordic countries. Northern societies are predominantly high tech, high consumption and high energy supply societies. And with the transition from older energy sources (wood for heating and stream water for power production) to newer ones (oil and nuclear energy) discussions on the environmental impact have led to public and corporate action. The Northern countries have been at the forefront in finding sustainable alternatives to solve conflicts arising from the rise in energy needs. However, these countries have taken different pathways with different policies in attempting to achieve this. As the needs and concerns from climate change arise, a Northern dimension, involving policies that contrast to European and global trends, emerges. Energy, Policy, and the Environment: Modeling Sustainable Development for the North explores that dimension.
Book Synopsis Energy for a Sustainable World by : Vincenzo Balzani
Download or read book Energy for a Sustainable World written by Vincenzo Balzani and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easy read, balancing the pros and cons, this book surveys the energy issue from a broad scientific perspective while considering environmental, economic, and social factors. It explains the basic concepts, provides a historical overview of energy resources, assesses our unsustainable energy system based on fossil fuels, and shows that the energy crisis is not only a tough challenge, but also an unprecedented opportunity to become more concerned about the world in which we live and the society we have built up. By outlining the alternatives for today and the future, it gives an extensive overview on nuclear energy, solar thermal and photovoltaics, solar fuels, wind power, ocean energies and other renewables, highlighting the increasing importance of electricity and the long-term perspectives of a hydrogen-based economy. An excellent source of updated and carefully documented information on the entangled aspects of the energy issue, this book is a guide for scientists, students and teachers looking for ways out of the energy and climate crisis, and the problems and disparities generated during the fossil fuel era.
