Book Synopsis The Contest of the Century by : Geoff A. Dyer
Download or read book The Contest of the Century written by Geoff A. Dyer and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From former Financial Times Beijing bureau chief Geoff Dyer, a balanced and far-seeing analysis of the emerging competition between China and America. Global politics is shifting rapidly. After decades of rising, China has entered a new and critical phase, seeking to turn its economic heft into global power. In this deeply informed book, Geoff Dyer argues that China and the United States are now embarking on a great power-style competition that will dominate the century. Tensions in the South China Sea and East China Sea are a foretaste of the broader competition to come. With keen analysis based on a deep local knowledge—offering the reader visions of coastal Chinese beauty pageants and secret submarine bases, lockstep Beijing military parades and pigeons caged from the sky—Dyer explains why the U.S. also has a real chance to come out on top and can retain a central role in the world. The Contest of the Century is essential reading at a time of great uncertainty about America’s future and about Asia’s emerging disputes.

Book Synopsis Why Cats are Assholes by : Liz Miele
Download or read book Why Cats are Assholes written by Liz Miele and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people love cats. They’re fluffy, playful, and can be a joy to have as a companion. However, they can also be huge assholes. So what can you do? How do you deal with a roommate who always seems to be plotting to kill you? While we all love sharing adorable photos of kittens, these frisky felines are known more for marching to the beat of their own drum than abiding by the rules. From running around your home at two in the morning, knocking everything off your shelves, or taking up most of your bed, these furry critters can be immensely selfish and disrespectful to those who give them endless love and affection. Why Cats Are Assholes is up for such a challenge. From studying their history all the way back to ancient Egypt, comedian Liz Miele—the daughter of veterinarians—digests the cat psyche to try and understand why they do the things they do, and how we, as their loyal servants, can handle domestic bliss with them around. With the help of her cat Pasta, Miele breaks down the common behaviors of cats in an attempt to try and better understand their plan of attack (if there is one), as well as what we can do to better prepare ourselves. Whether you have one, two, or twelve fur babies, Why Cats Are Assholes is the ultimate guide to better understanding your pet’s behavior while taking back your home from these domesticated terrorists.

Book Synopsis A Contest of Ideas by : Nelson Lichtenstein
Download or read book A Contest of Ideas written by Nelson Lichtenstein and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-09-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years Nelson Lichtenstein has deployed his scholarship--on labor, politics, and social thought--to chart the history and prospects of a progressive America. A Contest of Ideas collects and updates many of Lichtenstein's most provocative and controversial essays and reviews. These incisive writings link the fate of the labor movement to the transformations in the shape of world capitalism, to the rise of the civil rights movement, and to the activists and intellectuals who have played such important roles. Tracing broad patterns of political thought, Lichtenstein offers important perspectives on the relationship of labor and the state, the tensions that sometimes exist between a culture of rights and the idea of solidarity, and the rise of conservatism in politics, law, and intellectual life. The volume closes with portraits of five activist intellectuals whose work has been vital to the conflicts that engage the labor movement, public policy, and political culture.

Book Synopsis The Contest for Time and Space in the Roman Imperial Cults and 1 Peter by : Wei Hsien Wan
Download or read book The Contest for Time and Space in the Roman Imperial Cults and 1 Peter written by Wei Hsien Wan and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-17 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wei Hsien Wan builds on the work of David Horrell and Travis Williams for his argument that the letter of 1 Peter engages in a subtle, calculated form of resistance to Rome, that has often gone undetected. Whilst previous discussion of the topic has remained largely focused on the letter's stance toward specific Roman institutions, such as the emperor, household structures, and the imperial cults, Wan takes the conversation beyond these confines and examines 1 Peter's critique of the Roman Empire in terms of its ideology or worldview. Using the work of James Scott to conceptualize ideological resistance against domination, Wan considers how the imperial cults of Anatolia and 1 Peter offered distinct constructions of time and space-that is, how they envisioned reality differently. Insofar as these differences led to divergent ways of conceiving the social order, they acquired political power and generated potential for conflict. Wan thus argues that 1 Peter confronts Rome on a cosmic scale with its alternative construal of time and space, and examines the evidence that the Petrine author consciously, if cautiously, interrogated the imperial imagination at its most foundational levels, and set forth in its place a theocentric, Christological understanding of the world.
