Book excerpt: The shortage of teachers, especially in specialized areas, such as special education, has prompted a shift in policy to expand the type of teacher preparation programs. Where once there existed only higher education preparation programs, today there are alternative routes to preparation and certification. The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions and feelings of professional preparedness of alternatively certified special education teachers, as reflected in their initial years of practice. This study uses a mixed-methods research design and includes a survey and semi-structured interviews as the methodologies of choice. Findings from this study are: (1) novice traditionally certified teachers felt more thoroughly prepared to teach in the theoretical aspects of the profession (student learning pace, teaching to student multiple modalities, and student pedagogical knowledge) and making a direct positive impact on student learning and development; (2) novice alternatively certified novice teachers felt more prepared for the practical impact to student learning of the profession (multiple methods of assessment, instructional strategies, teaching a specialized curriculum, and using a core curriculum); and (3) overall, both sets of teachers felt that their initial program prepared them with the basic knowledge of the profession

Book excerpt: This quantitative dissertation examined the differences in special education teacher preparation programs and their association with novice teachers' self-efficacy in the areas of classroom management, student engagement, and instructional strategies while teaching students with moderate to severe disabilities. Tschannen-Moran and Woolfolk Hoy's Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale was used to measure self-efficacy while demographic variables such as initial teacher certification style and student teaching experiences were also considered. One hundred and six special education teachers voluntarily participated in this study. This study investigated whether different state models for special education teacher certification influenced the self-efficacy of novice teachers. Three models exist in the United States; however, the analyses of their differences did not result in strong associations for influencing self-efficacy. This suggests state leaders can use different teacher certification models to prepare special education teachers as the model itself does not influence self-efficacy. Results of this study provide opportunities for future research related to self-efficacy and special education teacher preparation.

Book excerpt: Students with disabilities are a specific group of the student population that are guaranteed rights that allow them to receive a free and unbiased education in an environment with their non-disabled peers. The importance of this study relates to providing students with disabilities with the opportunity to receive instruction from the most efficient and prepared educators. The purpose of this study is to determine how specific factors influence special education belief systems. In particular, educators who provide science instruction in whole group or small group classrooms in a large metropolitan area in Georgia possess specific beliefs about their ability to provide meaningful instruction. Data was collected through a correlational study completed by educators through an online survey website. The SEBEST quantitative survey instrument was used on a medium sample size (approximately 120 teachers) in a large metropolitan school district. The selected statistical analysis was the Shapiro-Wilk and Mann-Whitney in order to determine if any correlation exists among preservice training and perceived self-efficacy of secondary special education teachers in the content area of science. The results of this study showed that special education teachers in the content area of science have a higher perceived self-efficacy if they have completed an alternative certification program. Other variables tested did not show any statistical significance. Further research can be centered on the analysis of actual teacher efficacy, year end teacher efficacy measurements, teacher stipends, increased recruitment, and special education teachers of multiple content areas

Book excerpt: Special education teachers leave the field at rates higher than other teachers, with the highest rates demonstrated by beginning special education teachers (Boe, Cook & Sunderland, 2008; Jones, Youngs, & Frank, 2013; White & Mason, 2006). This high turnover rate requires school systems to invest significant amounts of time, energy, and resources into the continual retraining of special education teachers (Thornton et al., 2007). Increasing novice special education teacher self-efficacy may be one way of improving teacher performance, resilience, and willingness to remain in the field (Ruble, Usher & McGrew, 2011). This mixed-method action research study examined the influence an induction and mentoring program may have on self-efficacy levels of novice special education teachers, which may, in turn, led to higher rates of desired special education teacher retention. The action research team also explored components of mentor support and training that may influence the development of increased teacher self-efficacy in novice special education teachers. Findings indicated that special education mentor teachers provide a significant amount of support to new special education teachers, including modeling instruction, observing instruction and providing immediate feedback, supporting the implementation of effective instructional strategies, supporting behavior management, and offering encouragement and moral support. As a result of this mentoring support, new special education teachers adjust their classroom practices in the areas of providing instruction, behavior management, teaching district standards, and reflection. While mentoring provides benefits to new special education teachers, many new special education teachers continue to feel overwhelmed. Special education mentor teachers highly valued ongoing face-to-face training that targeted effective mentoring skills, best instructional practices for students with disabilities, and included dedicated time to collaborate with other special education mentors. Special education mentors require ongoing support to continue successfully navigating the challenges of being a special educator as they support new teachers, especially in the areas of managing job demands, role confusion, and navigating relationships with general education colleagues.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to describe the perceptions of intermediate special education teachers regarding the factors that influence their self-efficacy toward teaching writing to students with disabilities. Students with learning disabilities rank at the bottom of national test scores for writing, resulting in a dire need for increased writing instruction (Institute of Education Sciences, 2011). Special education teachers may struggle to provide adequate writing instruction because of a lack of training, resources, support, or low self-efficacy (Graham, 2019; Hodges et al., 2019; Risko & Reid, 2019). Teacher self-efficacy influences student self-efficacy and positive student outcomes (Bandura, 1997). This study addressed the central research question relating to how special education teachers described the factors that influence the development of their self-efficacy towards teaching writing to students with learning disabilities. A purposeful sampling of teachers participated in this study. Data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, audio journals, and online focus groups. Data was viewed through Bandura's theoretical framework of self-efficacy. Moustaka's (1994) modification of the Van Kaam method of data analysis was applied. Data were initially read and reread through horizonalization and then coded using NVivo 12 qualitative research software. The following themes emerged: learning to write, teacher training, mentors and models, experiences teaching writing, and feedback. Special education teachers noted fewer experiences that developed high levels of self-efficacy toward teaching writing, creating a need for the development of teacher training and professional development opportunities specific for special education teachers for writing.

Book excerpt: This qualitative case study examined teachers' perceptions of self-efficacy and its effects upon job performance, job satisfaction, and variables that affect job retention. The study site was a special education center located in the southeastern region of Pennsylvania. Participants included 32 special education teachers who were employed at the selected site. Participants completed three surveys, the Educators Demographic Data Sheet, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey, and the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale. In addition, 17 of the participants were individually interviewed and observations were conducted throughout the site during a two-week period. Results of this study indicate a relationship between perceived self-efficacy and job performance, job satisfaction, and variables that affect job retention. It was found that, although the participants felt themselves to be efficacious in classroom management, student engagement, and instruction strategies, they perceived an overall lack of efficacy in completing all the duties of their job due to an abundance of paperwork and lack of time. Results indicate that these low feelings of efficacy are perceived to have a negative impact upon job performance and satisfaction. Conversely, the participants perceived feelings of efficacy in areas that relate to job retention.

This study incorporated two instruments, the Occupational Stress Inventory Revised, and the Collective Teacher Self Efficacy scale. Multiple regression was employed to estimate the relatedness of the two constructs. Statistical significance was found between Collective Teacher Self Efficacy and Psychological Strain as well as Vocational strain. Counselors may use these results to help select appropriate interventions with school faculties to help raise collective efficacy or to reduce stress. Suggestions for related future studies are presented.
