Book excerpt: In this "memoir" by Elizabeth I, legendary historical novelist Jean Plaidy reveals the Virgin Queen as she truly was: the bewildered, motherless child of an all-powerful father; a captive in the Tower of London; a shrewd politician; a lover of the arts; and eventually, an icon of an era. It is the story of her improbable rise to power and the great triumphs of her reign--the end of religious bloodshed, the settling of the New World, the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Brilliantly clever, a scholar with a ready wit, she was also vain, bold, and unpredictable, a queen who commanded--and won--absolute loyalty from those around her. But in these pages, in her own voice, Elizabeth also recounts the emotional turmoil of her life: the loneliness of power; the heartbreak of her lifelong love affair with Robert Dudley, whom she could never marry; and the terrible guilt of ordering the execution of her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots. In this unforgettable novel, Elizabeth emerges as one of the most fascinating and controversial women in history, and as England’s greatest monarch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE original conception of this volume dates back a good many years -- namely, to my first acquaintance with Robert Bell's "Songs from the Dramatists". "Why," I said to myself, "has no one brought together the 'Songs from the Novelists'?" No doubt, in the latter case, the field is not so wide as in the former. Our plays of importance, I should say, largely out-number our novels and romances of importance; and, even if that were not so, songs are naturally more common in drama than in fiction. The lyric opportunities of the dramatist are greater than those of the imaginative prose-writer. The former can introduce a song almost where he pleases: the latter has his story to tell, his scenery to describe; and, except in romance, the occasions when dialogue can be broken up by vocal performances are, of necessity, not numerous. Nevertheless, it is noticeable how frequent, after all, are the poetic or rhythmic interludes created by our novelists and Romanists. They occur in the least likely places. From certain of our celebrated fictionists such interludes were, in a sense, to be expected. When a novelist is also a poet -- when he has published poems separately from his novels -- it is not to be wondered at that he should be found "freshening the dusty road" of narrative with "babbling rills of song." Thus, when we remember the sonnets of Sir Philip Sidney, we are not surprised to find songs in his "Arcadia" when we think of "Marmion" and "The Lady of the Lake", we are not astonished to discover lyrics scattered over the broad surface of the "Waverley" series; "King Arthur" and "The Lost Tales of Miletus" prepare us for the verse in "The Last Days of Pompeii" and "Kenelm Chillingly"; "The Saint's Tragedy" and "Andromeda" account, in this way, for the songs in "The Water Babies"; from the author of "The Inn of Strange Meetings" come, naturally, the lyrics in "Frances", and the rest; and, if there were no verse in the novels and romances of such poets as George MacDonald and George Meredith, the fact would surely be remarkable....

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs From the Novelists: From Elizabeth to Victoria This volume is an attempt to bring together specimens of the lyric verse which is to be found scattered over English fiction from the days of Elizabeth till now. For the purposes of the work many hundred novels and romances have been examined, and the collection, as it stands, is the outcome of a long and assiduous study of the subject. The compiler would have liked to have reproduced examples of the poetic work of the younger school of living novelists, but it was necessary to put some limit to the size and scope of the volume, and some attractive songs known to the compiler have been omitted on account of the impossibility of covering the whole field of which they form only a part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a sequence of crises in nineteenth-century print culture and offers an original narrative of what it meant to be a Victorian novelist. Easily dismissed at the beginning of the century as hacks who pandered to the ignorant or indolent, novelists by the end of Victoria's reign could be esteemed among the greatest of artists. Between these extremes stretches a century of ideological contention between alternative representations of authorship. Deane brings new attention in his account to the trends in publishing and the expanding market surrounding Victorian literature, such as the new modes of production, arguments over copyright legislation, and revisions of the criteria of periodical criticism. Combining literary sociology and close readings, The Making of the Victorian Novelist offers an innovative history of the material pressures and rhetorical struggles that produced - and ultimately shattered - the Victorians' understanding of their great novelists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time Ian Watt published The Rise of the Novel. in 1957, it was clear that many women novelists before Jane Austen had been overlooked in critical studies of literature and that some of them had been completely forgotten by the reading public. In this book, Brian Corman explores the question of how and why this came about. Corman provides a systematic survey of the reputations of early women novelists as canons of the novel developed over a period of roughly two hundred years, and, in so doing, suggests reasons for their frequent exclusion. Women Novelists before Jane Austen challenges the view that exclusion from the canon was a simple function of gender and goes deeper to examine potential reasons why certain women writers were overlooked. In the process, it provides an overview of histories of the British novel from the beginning through to the mid-twentieth century, ending with the publication of Watt's famous text. Further, Corman offers a prolegomenon to the important recovery work of the late-twentieth century in which many revised accounts of the history of the novel appeared, essentially improving the scope covered by Watt. This study historicizes the place of early women novelists in the British canon in order to provide an informed context for current views.
