Download or read book Risk assessment and risk management of novel plant foods : concepts and principles written by Ib Knudsen, Inge Søborg, Folmer Eriksen, Kirsten Pilegaard and Jan Pedersen. and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2005-12-30 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel food regulation is already in force in the European Community, Australia/New Zealand and in Canada. These regulations distinguish between traditional plant foods and novel plant foods, as the novel plant foods need to go through a premarket assessment procedure. This report focus on developing a proposal for definitions and criteria for determining if a plant food is traditional or novel and a proposal for an approach for the safety assessment of such plant foods with no or limited documented history of safe consumption. The report recommend to introduce a 2-step management procedure, first to establish the novelty and secondly to define and commit resources for the safety assessment, and recommend to generate and use a worldwide net of global, regional, local and ethnobotanical positive lists for food plants to guide both the decision on novelty and the safety assessment. The report recommends using the "history of use"--Concept and if the data submitted can support the claim that a product has a history of safe use, the approval can be straightforward. In Europe around 300 food plants deliver near 100% of human daily intake of plant food calories while nearly 7,000 other food plant species are used in other parts of the world. This report focuses on the situation when novel food items from these 7,000 plants are to enter the European or other regional market.
Book Synopsis Safety Assessment of Genetically Modified Foods by : Kunlun Huang
Download or read book Safety Assessment of Genetically Modified Foods written by Kunlun Huang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to food safety assessment research on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). As is broadly known, the main concerns about GM foods’ adverse effects on health are the nutrients, toxicity, allergenicity and unexpected effects. Before GMOs can be made commercially available, a comprehensive food safety assessment – taking these concerns into account – must first be performed. Exploring these aspects, the book is divided into two parts: the first part focuses on the safety assessment guidelines of the CAC, while the second highlights new methods used for the evaluation of GMOs’ safety. Offering an essential, practical guide, it will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in the fields of food science and public health.

Download or read book Novel Food and Feed Safety SET 1: Safety Assessment of Transgenic Organisms written by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and published by OECD. This book was released on 2006-07-24 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The books on "Safety Assessment of Transgenic Organisms" constitute a compilation of the OECD Biosafety Consensus Documents. When published, Volume 1 and 2 contained the documents issued before 2006; Volume 3 and 4 are a continuation of the compilation up to 2010. The OECD Biosafety Consensus Documents identify elements of scientific information used in the environmental safety and risk assessment of transgenic organisms which are common to OECD member countries and some non members associated with the work. This is intended to encourage information sharing, promote harmonised practices, and prevent duplication of effort among countries. These books offer ready access to those consensus documents which have been issued on the website thus far. As such, it should be of value to applicants for commercial uses of transgenic organisms (crops, trees, microorganisms), to regulators and risk assessors in national authorities, as well as the wider scientific community. More information on the OECD's work related to the biosafety of transgenic organisms is found at BioTrack Online (http://www.oecd.org/biotrack).
