Book Synopsis The Selected Letters of Nikos Kazantzakis by : Nikos Kazantzakis
Download or read book The Selected Letters of Nikos Kazantzakis written by Nikos Kazantzakis and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Nikos Kazantzakis—the author of Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ—was as colorful and eventful as his fiction. And nowhere is his life revealed more fully or surprisingly than in his letters. Edited and translated by Kazantzakis scholar Peter Bien, this is the most comprehensive selection of Kazantzakis's letters in any language. One of the most important Greek writers of the twentieth century, Kazantzakis (1883–1957) participated in or witnessed some of the most extraordinary events of his times, including both world wars and the Spanish and Greek civil wars. As a foreign correspondent, an official in several Greek governments, and a political and artistic exile, he led a relentlessly nomadic existence, living in France, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Soviet Union, and England. He visited the Versailles Peace Conference, attended the tenth-anniversary celebration of the Bolshevik Revolution, interviewed Mussolini and Franco, and briefly served as a Greek cabinet minister—all the while producing a stream of novels, poems, plays, travel writing, autobiography, and translations. The letters collected here touch on almost every aspect of Kazantzakis's rich and tumultuous life, and show the genius of a man who was deeply attuned to the artistic, intellectual, and political events of his times.
Book Synopsis The Origins of Science by : Ernest H. Hutten
Download or read book The Origins of Science written by Ernest H. Hutten and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1962 The Origins of Science tries to explain scientific thought from its historical and psychological origins. The depth of psychology of today rather than traditional epistemology is needed in order to understand the problems of knowledge. Reality is the first problem of the scientist; it is exemplified by the idea of object, or of matter. The development of this idea from its Greek beginnings is traced and the unconscious mechanisms that underlie our thought processes -of abstraction, generalisation, etc.- are made manifest. The second problem is that of truth; it is illustrated by examples from the history of mathematics and of logic. Again, the ‘psychology’ of what we accept as truth is made explicit. Scientific method is the intellectual safeguard for the criteria of truth and reality. Instead of traditional induction, the creative view of scientific activity must be accepted. This book is a must read for scholars and researchers of philosophy of science and philosophy in general.

Book Synopsis Coinage and Money in Medieval Greece 1200-1430 (2 vols.) by : Julian Baker
Download or read book Coinage and Money in Medieval Greece 1200-1430 (2 vols.) written by Julian Baker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 1839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coinage and Money in Medieval Greece 1200-1430, by Julian Baker, is a monetary history of medieval Thessaly, mainland Greece and the Peloponnese, Epiros, and adjacent islands. The central focus of the book is the record of coin finds and coin types, which this study presents in a fully developed political, socio-economic, military, and archaeological/topographical context. In medieval Greece there is a strong symbiosis between monetary and historical developments. The general level of documentation is also vastly superior to the preceding middle Byzantine period. Volume Two presents and evaluates these data. Volume One offers analyses on major historical themes, which demonstrate that the monetary sources can hold narratives in their own rights, complementing and at times contradicting the established accounts. This volume was awarded the Médaille Allier de Hauteroche de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 2021: "MCette médaille a été décernée à M. Julian Baker pour son ouvrage en 2 vol. intitulé : Coinage and Money in Medieval Greece 1200-1430 (Leyden, Brill, 2020)." For more information, please visit Palmarès 2021
