More recently, new perspectives appeared at the nanoscale, with organic polariton and surface plasmon lasers. After a brief reminder to laser physics, a first chapter exposes what makes organic solid-state organic lasers specific. Covering both background material and advanced topics and including nearly 200 problems, Quantum Theory of Finite Systems has been designed to serve primarily as a text and will also prove useful as a reference in research. The first of the book's four parts introduces the basic mathematical apparatus: second quantization, canonical transformations, Wick theorems and the resulting diagram expansions, and oscillator models. The second part presents mean field approximations and the recently developed path integral methods for the quantization of collective modes. Part three develops perturbation theory in terms of both time-dependent Feynman diagrams and time-independent Goldstone diagrams. A fourth part discusses variational methods based on correlated wavefunctions, including spin correlations. The approximation schemes are formulated for fermions and bosons at eigher zero or non-zero temperature. Although the formalism developed applies to both finite and infinite systems, the book stresses those aspects of the theory that are specific to the description of finite systems. Thus special attention is given to mean field approximations, the ensuing broken symmetries, and the associated collective motions such as rotations. Conversely, some specific features of systems with infinite numbers of degrees of freedom (such as the thermodynamic limit, critical phenomena, and the elimination of ultraviolet divergencies) are deliberately omitted. Jean-Paul Blaizot and Georges Ripka are associated with the Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Saclay.

Book excerpt: Ce travail de thèse concerne le développement d'une source laser femtoseconde compacte dédiée au micro-usinage "athermique". Elle utilise les matériaux solides dopés par l'ion ytterbium (Yb 3+), directement pompés par des diodes laser de puis-sance. Cette source énergétique rassemble deux cavités laser : l'oscillateur impulsionnel et l'amplificateur régénératif, inséré dans un système à dérive de fréquence. L'oscillateur impulsionnel est verrouillé en phase passivement grâce à un absorbant saturable semiconducteur rapide (SESAM). Plusieurs oscillateurs ont été réalisés, avec une même diode laser de pompe (2 W @ 940 / 980 nm), afin de tester les domaines de fonctionnement de différents matériaux laser. Les performances varient essentiellement en durée, selon que l'on utilise l'Yb : verre (200 fs), l'Yb : YAG (570 fs), l'Yb : GdCOB (90 fs) ou l'Yb : KGW (140 fs). L'Yb : KGW permet de générer des impulsions brèves (230 fs) et accordables spectralement (1025 - 1061 nm), et, avec une source de pompe plus puissante (15 W), de disposer d'un oscillateur de forte puissance moyenne (1.5 W, 150 fs). L'amplificateur régénératif est directement pompé par une diode laser continue, et est injecté par l'oscillateur Yb : KGW. Nous montrons que l'énergie extraite est limitée par le seuil de dommage du matériau laser, et dans certaines conditions, par un phénomène de saturation de stockage. Le matériau le plus favorable pour un fonctionnement efficace à haute cadence est l'Yb : KGW, que nous utilisons pour réaliser deux amplificateurs régénératifs, pour deux puissances de pompes différentes (2 et 15 W). Les impulsions délivrées par le système le plus puissant ont une énergie supérieure à 200 uJ jusqu'à 3 kHz, qui aboutissent après recompression à des durées de 420 fs, pour une énergie supérieure à 100 uJ.
