Book Synopsis Human Germline Genome Modification and the Right to Science by : Andrea Boggio
Download or read book Human Germline Genome Modification and the Right to Science written by Andrea Boggio and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of the CRISPR/Cas9 class of genome editing tools is transforming not just science and medicine, but also law. When the genome of germline cells is modified, the modifications could be inherited, with far-reaching effects in time and scale. Legal systems are struggling with keeping up with the CRISPR revolution and both lawyers and scientists are often confused about existing regulations. This book contains an analysis of the national regulatory framework in eighteen selected countries. Written by national legal experts, it includes all major players in bioengineering, plus an analysis of the emerging international standards and a discussion of how international human rights standards should inform national and international regulatory frameworks. The authors propose a set of principles for the regulation of germline engineering, based on international human rights law, that can be the foundation for regulating heritable gene editing both at the level of countries as well as globally.

Book Synopsis Biology of Invertebrate and Lower Vertebrate Collagens by : A. Bairati
Download or read book Biology of Invertebrate and Lower Vertebrate Collagens written by A. Bairati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge in the field of the biology of the extracellular matrix, and in particular of collagen, has made considerable progress over the last ten years, especially in mammals, birds and ln man with respect to very important applied medical aspects. Basic knowledge in the animal kingdom overall has increased more slowly and haphazardly. We, therefore, considered it useful to organize a meeting specifically devoted to the study of the invertebrate and lower vertebrate collagens. The NATO Scientific Division financed an Advanced Research Workshop aimed at bringing together experts qualified in collagen biology (with morphological, biochemical and genetic specialization) with researchers who are currently studying collagenous tissues of invertebrates and lower vertebrates. The Medical-Biology Committee of the CNR-Rome and the University of Milan also supplied interest and support for the organization of this Meeting. The format of the workshop consisted in: 1) main lectures on the most recent aspects of collagen biology; 2) minireviews on the current knowledge of collagenous tissues in the various invertebrate phyla and in fish; 3) contributed papers on particular aspects of research in specific fields; 4) workshops on the methodology of studying collagen. As we had intended, the Workshop gave a comprehensive overview of acquired knowledge and of the present state of research actlvlty. It permitted wide interdisciplinary discussion, enabling collabora tions to be established and new research themes to be chosen. This volume contains the text of all the contributions presented at the Meeting, including posters.

Book Synopsis Anti-ageing Medicine by : Astrid Stuckelberger
Download or read book Anti-ageing Medicine written by Astrid Stuckelberger and published by vdf Hochschulverlag AG. This book was released on 2008 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century technological development is revolutionizing medicine and health care, bringing new hopes to human suffering by offering cures and treatments which were unthinkable a few decades ago. This is where anti-ageing medicine finds its niche. Anti-ageing medicine aims at slowing, arresting, and reversing phenomena associated with ageing by merging biotechnological innovation and engineered solutions. Ideally, by means of the newest medical technology, the "body machinery" should be kept fit and at peak performance all life long. Early detection of age-related dysfunction should thus be "fixed" at any age with interventions such as metabolic fine tuning, enhancement, regeneration, restoration or replacement of "body parts" (i.e. organs, skin, bone or muscle). It covers a vast array of domains: from cell therapy to pharmaceutical interventions, from bio-surgery to aesthetic surgery, from human enhancement to fortified food, from smart housing and robots to toxic-free environments. Anti-ageing medicine holds promises but also significant risks and safety issues which are addressesd in this book. It presents the latest scientific evidence on what works or does not work. It also provides public policy recommendations to ensure the protection of consumers and their rights while encouraging research and development. This book is intended for academics, health professionals, business persons, consumers and policy-makers interested in the latest evidence and ethical issues about anti-ageing medicine.

Book Synopsis Neocortical Grafting to Newborn and Adult Rats: Developmental, Anatomical and Functional Aspects by : Afsaneh Gaillard
Download or read book Neocortical Grafting to Newborn and Adult Rats: Developmental, Anatomical and Functional Aspects written by Afsaneh Gaillard and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-05-20 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanisms that govern the development of the neural circuitry are still largely unknown. Actually, it is not clearly established to what extent areal cortical differentiation depends on environmental or genetic factors. The first part of the present report deals with the findings of several transplantation studies, performed in newborn recipient rats, in which these developmental issues were addressed. In humans, the cerebral cortex can be affected by a variety of diseases and, therefore, several experimental studies have been undertaken to determine to what extent transplantation of cortical neurons could be proved as a useful treatment for cerebral cortical damage. The second part deals with the functional effects of transplantations performed in adult recipient rats.
Book Synopsis Creating Connections by : David Chittenden
Download or read book Creating Connections written by David Chittenden and published by Rowman Altamira. This book was released on 2004-05-17 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science museums are in the business of making science accessible to the public—a public constantly bombarded with new information and research results. How the public understands this information will affect what they expect and take away from a museum's exhibits and programs. Creating Connections looks at the public understanding of research (PUR) and how it affects what science museums do. What are the opportunities and critical issues in PUR? What strategies are working and what are some pitfalls? What can be learned from the media's experiences with PUR? Creating Connections will be an invaluable resource for science museum professionals who want to guide their institutions and their visitors toward a new understanding of and appreciation for current research.

Download or read book Symmetry written by Hermann Weyl and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetry is a classic study of symmetry in mathematics, the sciences, nature, and art from one of the twentieth century's greatest mathematicians. Hermann Weyl explores the concept of symmetry beginning with the idea that it represents a harmony of proportions, and gradually departs to examine its more abstract varieties and manifestations—as bilateral, translatory, rotational, ornamental, and crystallographic. Weyl investigates the general abstract mathematical idea underlying all these special forms, using a wealth of illustrations as support. Symmetry is a work of seminal relevance that explores the great variety of applications and importance of symmetry.
