Book Synopsis Political Economy and Religion by : Gilbert Faccarello
Download or read book Political Economy and Religion written by Gilbert Faccarello and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Antiquity, reflections about economic problems have always been intertwined with questions relating to politics, ethics and religion. From the 18th century onwards, economic thought seemed to have been gradually disentangled from any other field, and to have gained the status of an autonomous scientific discipline, especially with the later use of mathematics. In fact, the growth of economic knowledge never broke off any ties with these other fields, and, especially with religion and ethics, even though the links with them became less obvious, they only changed shape. This is what this book illustrates, each chapter dealing with different periods and authors from the Middle Ages to the present times. Focusing in turn on the thought of the Scholastics, Ibn Rushd (Averroes), John Calvin, the French liberal Jansenists, Dugald Stewart, David Ricardo, Henri de Saint-Simon, Charles de Coux and French Christian Political Economy, Auguste Comte and Émile Durkheim, Henry Sidgwick, Arthur Cecil Pigou, and finally John Maynard Keynes, the studies collected here show how religious themes played an important role in the development of economic thought. This book was originally published as a Special Issue of The European Journal of the History of Economic Thought.
Book Synopsis The Problem of War by : Edmund Silberner
Download or read book The Problem of War written by Edmund Silberner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a sober consideration of the relationship between war and economics as reflected in the history of economic thought of the 19th century. It is divided into three parts: the first examines the ideas of the classical school on the economic causes and consequences of war. The conceptions of Malthus, Ricardo, the Mills, as well as those of Say, Bastiat and Molinari, are analyzed and discussed. The second part is devoted to the study of Friedrich List, the German historical school and the partisans of the historical method outside Germany. The third deals with socialism. Saint-Simonism, Owenism, Fourierism and historical materialism are examined. A special chapter is given over to Marx and Engels. The study will be helpful not only to economists but to sociologists and historians, as well as to the general reader interested in the development of Western thought. Originally published in 1946. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Synopsis Economics and Capitalism in the Ottoman Empire by : Deniz T. Kilinçoğlu
Download or read book Economics and Capitalism in the Ottoman Empire written by Deniz T. Kilinçoğlu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to generate "capitalist spirit" in a society, where cultural, economic and political conditions did not unfold into an industrial revolution, and consequently into an advanced industrial-capitalist formation? This is exactly what some prominent public intellectuals in the late Ottoman Empire tried to achieve as a developmental strategy; long before Max Weber defined the notion of capitalist spirit as the main motive behind the development of capitalism. This book demonstrates how and why Ottoman reformists adapted (English and French) economic theory to the Ottoman institutional setting and popularized it to cultivate bourgeois values in the public sphere as a developmental strategy. It also reveals the imminent results of these efforts by presenting examples of how bourgeois values permeated into all spheres of socio-cultural life, from family life to literature, in the late Ottoman Empire. The text examines how the interplay between Western European economic theories and the traditional Muslim economic cultural setting paved the way for a new synthesis of a Muslim-capitalist value system; shedding light on the emergence of capitalism—as a cultural and an economic system—and the social transformation it created in a non-Western, and more specifically, in the Muslim Middle Eastern institutional setting. This book will be of great interest to scholars of modern Middle Eastern history, economic history, and the history of economic thought.
