Book Synopsis The Wild World of 4-Manifolds by : Alexandru Scorpan
Download or read book The Wild World of 4-Manifolds written by Alexandru Scorpan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2005-05-10 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What a wonderful book! I strongly recommend this book to anyone, especially graduate students, interested in getting a sense of 4-manifolds. --MAA Reviews The book gives an excellent overview of 4-manifolds, with many figures and historical notes. Graduate students, nonexperts, and experts alike will enjoy browsing through it. -- Robion C. Kirby, University of California, Berkeley This book offers a panorama of the topology of simply connected smooth manifolds of dimension four. Dimension four is unlike any other dimension; it is large enough to have room for wild things to happen, but small enough so that there is no room to undo the wildness. For example, only manifolds of dimension four can exhibit infinitely many distinct smooth structures. Indeed, their topology remains the least understood today. To put things in context, the book starts with a survey of higher dimensions and of topological 4-manifolds. In the second part, the main invariant of a 4-manifold--the intersection form--and its interaction with the topology of the manifold are investigated. In the third part, as an important source of examples, complex surfaces are reviewed. In the final fourth part of the book, gauge theory is presented; this differential-geometric method has brought to light how unwieldy smooth 4-manifolds truly are, and while bringing new insights, has raised more questions than answers. The structure of the book is modular, organized into a main track of about two hundred pages, augmented by extensive notes at the end of each chapter, where many extra details, proofs and developments are presented. To help the reader, the text is peppered with over 250 illustrations and has an extensive index.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Siegel Modular Forms and Dirichlet Series by : Anatoli Andrianov
Download or read book Introduction to Siegel Modular Forms and Dirichlet Series written by Anatoli Andrianov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-17 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago I was invited to an American university to give one-term graduate course on Siegel modular forms, Hecke operators, and related zeta functions. The idea to present in a concise but basically complete and self-contained form an int- duction to an important and developing area based partly on my own work attracted me. I accepted the invitation and started to prepare the course. Unfortunately, the visit was not realized. But the idea of such a course continued to be alive till after a number of years this book was ?nally completed. I hope that this short book will serve to attract young researchers to this beautiful ?eld, and that it will simplify and make more pleasant the initial steps. No special knowledge is presupposed for reading this book beyond standard courses in algebra and calculus (one and several variables), although some skill in working with mathematical texts would be helpful. The reader will judge whether the result was worth the effort. Dedications. The ideas of Goro Shimura exerted a deep in?uence on the number theory of the second half of the twentieth century in general and on the author’s formation in particular. When Andre ` Weil was signing a copy of his “Basic Number Theory” to my son, he wrote in Russian, ”To Fedor Anatolievich hoping that he will become a number theoretist”. Fedor has chosen computer science. Now I pass on the idea to Fedor’s daughter, Alexandra Fedorovna.

Book Synopsis Algebraic Groups and Number Theory by : Vladimir Platonov
Download or read book Algebraic Groups and Number Theory written by Vladimir Platonov and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1993-12-07 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This milestone work on the arithmetic theory of linear algebraic groups is now available in English for the first time. Algebraic Groups and Number Theory provides the first systematic exposition in mathematical literature of the junction of group theory, algebraic geometry, and number theory. The exposition of the topic is built on a synthesis of methods from algebraic geometry, number theory, analysis, and topology, and the result is a systematic overview ofalmost all of the major results of the arithmetic theory of algebraic groups obtained to date.

Download or read book Treatise on Analysis written by J. Dieudonné and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatise on Analysis, Volume 10–VII provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of linear functional equations. This book discusses the problems dealing with functional equations of scalar or of vectors. Comprised of one chapter, this volume begins with a description and study of the primary concepts and tools that have prompted the progress in the study of linear partial differential equations. This text then explains the importance of the integral operators. The reader is also introduced to integral operators that operate not only on vector function, but also on sections of vector bundles. This book discusses as well the applications of the differential operators to spectral theory. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians.

Book Synopsis Noncommutative Geometry, Quantum Fields and Motives by : Alain Connes
Download or read book Noncommutative Geometry, Quantum Fields and Motives written by Alain Connes and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unifying theme of this book is the interplay among noncommutative geometry, physics, and number theory. The two main objects of investigation are spaces where both the noncommutative and the motivic aspects come to play a role: space-time, where the guiding principle is the problem of developing a quantum theory of gravity, and the space of primes, where one can regard the Riemann Hypothesis as a long-standing problem motivating the development of new geometric tools. The book stresses the relevance of noncommutative geometry in dealing with these two spaces. The first part of the book deals with quantum field theory and the geometric structure of renormalization as a Riemann-Hilbert correspondence. It also presents a model of elementary particle physics based on noncommutative geometry. The main result is a complete derivation of the full Standard Model Lagrangian from a very simple mathematical input. Other topics covered in the first part of the book are a noncommutative geometry model of dimensional regularization and its role in anomaly computations, and a brief introduction to motives and their conjectural relation to quantum field theory. The second part of the book gives an interpretation of the Weil explicit formula as a trace formula and a spectral realization of the zeros of the Riemann zeta function. This is based on the noncommutative geometry of the adèle class space, which is also described as the space of commensurability classes of Q-lattices, and is dual to a noncommutative motive (endomotive) whose cyclic homology provides a general setting for spectral realizations of zeros of L-functions. The quantum statistical mechanics of the space of Q-lattices, in one and two dimensions, exhibits spontaneous symmetry breaking. In the low-temperature regime, the equilibrium states of the corresponding systems are related to points of classical moduli spaces and the symmetries to the class field theory of the field of rational numbers and of imaginary quadratic fields, as well as to the automorphisms of the field of modular functions. The book ends with a set of analogies between the noncommutative geometries underlying the mathematical formulation of the Standard Model minimally coupled to gravity and the moduli spaces of Q-lattices used in the study of the zeta function.
