From the present point of view, the future is not fixed: while there is arguably only one past, the future is largely open and/or indeterminate. Reference to the future has thus become one of the most hotly-debated topics in contemporary linguistics: the interactions of future tense with future time, and of future tense with the semantics of possible worlds, are crucial to any satisfactory account of temporal linguistics. This book considers and seeks a resolution to outstanding issues in the field by uniting linguistic and philosophical perspectives on future reference in natural language. Scholars from different parts of the world approach these issues from a variety of theoretical perspectives, including those of linguistic typology, formal semantics, pragmatics, and philosophy of language. In the process they question the very validity of the traditional notion of a specific marker for future tense. The book shows the close connections between linguistic, logical, metaphysical, ontological, and epistemological issues concerning the future and reveals the value of linking linguistic considerations of tense and aspect to philosophical approaches to modality and time.

Additionally, Quirk points out that there is no morphological future form in English. While, for example,-edis added to regular verbs in order to form the Simple Past and-sis added in order to form the 3rdperson singular in the Simple Present Tense, there is no such rule for the future time in English. Consequently, future time is not formed by verb inflection. Therefore, according to Quirk there is no future tense in English. However, linguists and teachers argue about this problem and thus two main views can be distinguished (Quirk 1985:176): a) As already mentioned tense can only be achieved by verb inflection. Hence, English has no future tense. b) A future reference can be achieved by using an auxiliary verb construction, such aswill+ infinitive, for example. It appears evident that despite the fact that English has no future tense, it must be capable of expressing future time, namely by the use of auxiliaries. According to Quirk (1985:120)auxiliariescan be divided into primary verbs (be,have, do)or modal verbs (can,may, will, shall, could, might, would, should, must).The latter category is also calledmodal auxiliaries.As it was already indicated above, modal auxiliaries, especiallywillandshall, play an important role in terms of future time in English. For that reason, this term paper deals with an analysis of the modal auxiliarieswillandshalland their future time reference. This analysis is based on the Chemnitz Translation Corpus of the Chemnitz Internet Grammar.1Barnbrook (1996:168) defines acorpusas “a collection of texts, selected to represent a particular type of language and held incomputer-readableform”. The Chemnitz Translation Corpus consists of four main types of texts:policy documents, academic writing, tourist brochuresand ofpolitical and public speeches.All example sentences for the analysis ofwillandshallwhich appear in this paper were taken from this corpus and by that, from the above-mentioned types of text.2By analysing a lot of example sentences with different contexts, i. e. for example biblical, political or tourist backgrounds, the aim of this paper is to find hypotheses for future or non-future uses ofwillandshalland by that, to develop grammar rules.

In order to analyse the different forms and meanings of the various future concepts, there are several English Grammar books providing useful theoretical information. The first part of the paper serves as a theoretical overview. In this section the different future concepts are analysed and the meaning of the different tenses is dissected. The second part consists of the practical part. It illustrates where and why the different future concepts are used in different examples. It also shows how the rules in the theoretical part apply to the practical examples like dialogues and full texts. In English, like in all Germanic languages, there is no simple future tense. The futurity of an action is expressed either by using a word which expresses a future action, e.g. I drive to London in two days, or by utilising an auxiliary construction that combines a definite present tense verb with the stem of this verb which illustrates the actual action of the sentence. The English future tense was established during the period of 300 years, between 1066 and 1350. During that time, Anglo-Norman was the official language of the British Isles. Unlike English, Norman is a Romance Language, which does have a simple future tense. In the course of the study of the English future concepts, one has to make a difference between spoken and written language. As spoken language is used more often than written language, the used future tense differs.
