Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Medical Treatment of Disease The aim of this little work is to impress upon the student and young practitioner the broad principles of the medical treatment of the sick, and to urge the importance of method in dealing with patients. In the teaching of clinical medicine, the need of system in physical examination is fully recognized - thus the student is early taught to work in the order of inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation - but this system is sometimes lacking when one comes to treatment. No attempt is made here to discuss all treatment of all diseases. This would be manifestly impossible in the space, and, moreover, would defeat the end in view. In a volume of this kind, details and special treatments must be largely omitted or only hinted at. The student will get much minute instruction during his courses in the special branches of medicine, but it is hoped that what is here given may serve as a foundation upon which he may build that which he will gain from teachers and writers specially qualified to impart such information. All along, the effort will be made to impress upon the reader that we are not in practice dealing with disease, but rather with diseased individuals, which is quite a different thing. The question should not be, "what is the treatment of (let us say) pneumonia?" but rather, "how can we best care for the patient so that he may weather the pneumonic storm?" The ever-growing importance of the science of pharmacology is evident, and drug therapy is based upon it almost as much as is medicine upon physiology and pathology. At the same time, it must be conceded that we are still ignorant of how many of our best remedies act and, while always hoping and striving after a reasonable explanation of their modus operandi, we can only in the meantime use them because they have been found to do good. If a treatment called "X" tends to relieve a condition called "Y," it is the duty of the physician to employ it even if he cannot yet give the values of "X" and "Y." Much of our best therapy is still empirical and must necessarily remain so for long. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Symptoms and Treatment of All Diseases The best physicians at present, consider Feyer a disease of the whole system: and seem to have but little confidence, in any theory that has been suggest ed respecting its nature. There is, however, a gem eral belief, that the reaction of the heart and arteries, is an effort of nature to throw off. Disease, but they think the attempt to ascertain the first link in the chain of diseased act1on, is vain. The inference drawn by the Thomsonians, from this theory, is, that Feve and inflammation are friends, and should be treated as such; but they are such fuénds as often destroy life, by their too Violent efforts to restore. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of the Medical Treatment of Diseases and Symptoms The sequence of the chapters in this work rests chie y on an anatomical and physiological basis, but occasionally sections have been inserted dealing with symptoms of frequent occurrence. Under the heading of the different diseases those symptoms only are mentioned which afford indications for treatment. Similarly, with regard to the causes and complications of certain morbid conditions, stress is laid upon those which call for prophylactic or remedial measures. To present a complete account of the various diseases, including questions relating to pathology, diagnosis, and prognosis, would have been beyond the Scope and purpose of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Diseases of the Skin: With Notes of Diagnosis and Treatment The object of this small volume is to provide illustrations and a Short description of some of the commoner diseases of the Skin, with a few lines on differential diagnosis and methods of treatment. NO one appreciates better than the author that dermatology can only be properly taught from clinical material, but this is not always within reach of the student and illustra tions can in a measure replace it. The book is not intended to take the place of the larger works on dermatology, but the necessarily comprehensive nature of such works makes them at times a source of confusion to the student, whose lack of knowledge renders it difficult for him to identify one disease among the descriptions of a number of somewhat similar, but perhaps rare, ones. Graduates of the Faculty of Medicine of mcgill University will recognize that - the views enunciated closely follow the teaching of the former Professor Of Dermatology, Dr. Francis J. Shepherd, whose almost uncanny astuteness in diagnosis and simple methods of treatment the writer had the advantage of following for twenty years as his assistant in the Montreal General Hospital clinic. In choosing the diseases which Should be included in a work of this scope, the writer has based his selection on the statistics of the hospital clinic with which he is connected, thereby, possibly, admitting some not properly classed as common, because of the large proportion of aliens in his clientele. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Diseases of the Skin: With Special Reference to Their Diagnosis and Treatment, Including an Analysis of 11, 000 Consecutive Cases In my endeavor to keep the book within reasonable limits, I have abstained from entering upon the structure of the skin in a state of health, which can be studied in most works on anatomy, and, partly for the same reason, I have in many instances touched but lightly upon the anatomical lesions, while fully discussing them in those cases in which their study has yielded practical results. But, with all its imperfections, I would fain hope that it will, in some measure at least, supply to the student and to the practitioner a reliable guide to the diagnosis and treatment of a most important branch of medicine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Favorite Prescriptions of Distinguished Practitioners: With Notes on Treatment Surrounded by the voluminous medical publications of the times, the busy practitioner is often at a loss to select from the mass of material at his disposal, without monopolizing time that he can ill afford to spend in this way, that combination of therapeutical agencies which the experience of the most learned, successful and best trained medical minds of the age has proven is best adapted to meet the indications for treatment in well known conditions of disease. The author has striven, in this presentation of favorite prescriptions and practical points in treatment, to place before the profession for constant reference, in a condensed, readily accessible way, matter that could only be gleaned from careful study and association with the medical writers and teachers of the times. No pretence of originality is made. The book is essentially a compilation. It is, however, a book which it is believed will be eminently useful. The design of the writer will have been accomplished if he succeeds by his offering in rendering more available for every-day use and guidance the practical treasures of medical wisdom which have been gathered from the earnest labors and careful observations of the most distinguished practitioners of the age. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cause, Cure, and Prevention of Disease MY only object in the writing of this book is to tell what I know to be the truth. I have endeavored to make my criticism independent of my prejudices, understanding as I do that prejudice never knows the Value of a fact. While my criticism of the medical profession, and of all those engaged in the treatment of disease, may seem somewhat severe, yet I have said nothing that 1 have not myself verified. Here it may be well to state that in the medical profession there are many noble and useful men, whose gen ius and skill in surgery are only surpassed by their honest ambition to accomplish good. It has been my intention for Some time to write a book which, from my personal experience, I knew would be of great importance and benefit to the human race. Yet I know that upon this subject of disease much glistening eloquence has been squandered in the hope of personal gain.
