Book excerpt: Notes From The Dockside Volume IV will take you from lessons in life to the joys of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Join Mike Yurk as he explores the adventures of fishing. Meet his beloved Bass Queen, his buddy The Commissioner, his faithful mechanic The Boat Doctor along with other friends and family who join him on the water. The seventy- four stories found in this volume will take you to Panama and the Bahamas, to a rainy day in France, as well as the many lakes in Northwestern Wisconsin where Mike lives and fishes. Find the wonder of the outdoors in Northern Minnesota were the last of the original, old pine trees remain from before the days of logging and a Viking relic which could be the first fishing story carved in stone. Equipment, baits, lures all playing an integral part to fishing are part of the stories too. Through these stories Mike explores the many sides of fishing from good luck to bad luck, small and big fish and sometimes few fish. There is much more to fishing than just catching fish as Mike explores new and old lakes, good weather and bad, memories of old friends now gone and young fisher people who are just beginning to find the love of angling. Spend a day on the water with Mike and his fishing buddies, young and old, and experience the passion and excitement which comes with fishing and what makes it so special. “Mike Yurk is a seasoned angler and author who has filled his stringer with stores on water near and far. Pull up a seat and let him share his tales in Notes From The Dockside one pleasing nugget at a time.” Paul Smith, Outdoor Editor, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dockside Reading Isabel Hofmeyr traces the relationships among print culture, colonialism, and the ocean through the institution of the British colonial Custom House. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, dockside customs officials would leaf through publications looking for obscenity, politically objectionable materials, or reprints of British copyrighted works, often dumping these condemned goods into the water. These practices, echoing other colonial imaginaries of the ocean as a space for erasing incriminating evidence of the violence of empire, informed later censorship regimes under apartheid in South Africa. By tracking printed matter from ship to shore, Hofmeyr shows how literary institutions like copyright and censorship were shaped by colonial control of coastal waters. Set in the environmental context of the colonial port city, Dockside Reading explores how imperialism colonizes water. Hofmeyr examines this theme through the concept of hydrocolonialism, which puts together land and sea, empire and environment.

Book excerpt: In the opening pages of Moby Dick, Herman Melville called New Bedford, Massachusetts, “the dearest place to live in, in all of New England.” But the old fishing port and manufacturing center—once one of the richest cities in New England—has withered in the modern economy. Its once-prosperous fishermen now struggle with government regulations and fished-out seas, while its empty factories now offer more work to the Fire Department than anyone else. In Down at the Docks, Rory Nugent tells the “riches to rags” story of this iconic American town through beautifully told and unsentimental portraits of its residents. Their lives inform a eulogy to the distinctive ideas, traditions, and culture that is about to disappear from the waterfront.

Book excerpt: When it comes to urban planning, to what extent and under what conditions should the community’s interest prevail over the rights of private property owners? Public Interest, Private Property addresses this question at a time when pollution, urban sprawl, and condo booms are forcing municipal governments to adopt prescriptive laws and regulations. Case studies focus on spheres in which public values and private property rights collide – expropriation law, natural resources regulation, green development, and water provision – laying the groundwork for more active debates on the issues currently shaping our cities.

Book excerpt: How an alliance of the labor and environmental movements used law as a tool to clean up the trucking industry at the nation's largest port. In Blue and Green, Scott Cummings examines a campaign by the labor and environmental movements to transform trucking at America's largest port in Los Angeles. Tracing the history of struggle in an industry at the epicenter of the global supply chain, Cummings shows how an unprecedented “blue-green” alliance mobilized to improve working conditions for low-income drivers and air quality in nearby communities. The campaign for “clean trucks,” Cummings argues, teaches much about how social movements can use law to challenge inequality in a global era. Cummings shows how federal deregulation created interrelated economic and environmental problems at the port and how the campaign fought back by mobilizing law at the local level. He documents three critical stages: initial success in passing landmark legislation requiring port trucking companies to convert trucks from dirty to clean and drivers from contractors to employees with full labor rights; campaign decline after industry litigation blocked employee conversion; and campaign resurgence through an innovative legal approach to driver misclassification that realized a central labor movement goal—unionizing port truckers. Appraising the campaign, Cummings analyzes the tradeoffs of using alternative legal frameworks to promote labor organizing, and explores lessons for building movements to regulate low-wage work in the “gig” economy. He shows how law can bind coalitions together and split them apart, and concludes that the fight for legal reform never ends, but rather takes different turns on the long road to justice.

This volume begins with a general introduction to the field, followed by six sections: Perspectives: broad overviews engaging fields such as biosemiosis, kinship praxis, and philosophical approaches; Experiments: formal innovations developed by poets in response to planetary crises; Earth and Water: explorations of poetic entanglement with planetary chemical and biological systems; Waste/Toxicity/Precarity: poetics addressing the effects of pollution and climate change; Environmental Justice and Activism: examinations of poetry as an engine of political and cultural change; Region and Place: an international array of traditional and contemporary geographically focused responses to ecosystems and environmental conditions; and Subjectivities/Affects/Sexualities: investigations of gender, ethnicity, and race as they intersect with ecological concerns. Each section includes an overview and summary addressing the specific essays in the section. These previously unpublished essays represent a wide variety of nationalities, backgrounds, perspectives, and critical approaches exploring the interdisciplinary field of ecopoetics. Contributions from leading scholars working across the globe make The Routledge Companion to Ecopoetics a landmark textbook and reference for a variety of researchers and students.
