Book excerpt: Truth and reconciliation commissions and official governmental apologies continue to surface worldwide as mechanisms for coming to terms with human rights violations and social atrocities. As the first scholarly collection to explore the intersections and differences between a range of redress cases that have emerged in Canada in recent decades, Reconciling Canada provides readers with the contexts for understanding the phenomenon of reconciliation as it has played out in this multicultural settler state. In this volume, leading scholars in the humanities and social sciences relate contemporary political and social efforts to redress wrongs to the fraught history of government relations with Aboriginal and diasporic populations. The contributors offer ground-breaking perspectives on Canada’s ‘culture of redress,’ broaching questions of law and constitutional change, political coalitions, commemoration, testimony, and literatures of injury and its aftermath. Also assembled together for the first time is a collection of primary documents – including government reports, parliamentary debates, and redress movement statements – prefaced with contextual information. Reconciling Canada provides a vital and immensely relevant illumination of the dynamics of reconciliation, apology, and redress in contemporary Canada.

Book excerpt: The Leamington Italian Community intertwines personal and family stories with both empirical and intuitive writing to offer new historical insights into the complex social, economic, and psychological causes and effects of the migration phenomenon. Walter Temelini meticulously reconstructs the history of immigration and settlement in Leamington, Ontario, of Italians from the southern regions of Lazio, Molise, and Sicily. He explains how, despite their regional differences, three generations between 1925 and the 1990s forged a cohesive, socially conscious, and unique agricultural community by balancing their inherited values and their newly adopted Canadian economic opportunities. Temelini's groundbreaking research draws on testimonial and documentary evidence gathered from in-depth interviews with hundreds of residents, as well as on original archival information and Italian-language histories translated by the author and previously unavailable to English-speaking readers. He concludes his study with an investigation into the award-winning novel Lives of the Saints by Nino Ricci, one of the community's most celebrated descendants. Drawing parallels between Ricci's narrative and the development of the community, Temelini demonstrates that ethnicity can be transformed successfully into a powerful universal archetype, and a creative force of identity. A pioneering and authoritative work, The Leamington Italian Community creates an intimate portrait within a global framework, delving into issues both timely and timeless, that will interest and inform the general and specialized reader alike.

Book excerpt: Shifting the Ground of Canadian Literary Studies is a collection of interdisciplinary essays that examine the various contexts—political, social, and cultural—that have shaped the study of Canadian literature and the role it plays in our understanding of the Canadian nation-state. The essays are tied together as instances of critical practices that reveal the relations and exchanges that take place between the categories of the literary and the nation, as well as between the disciplinary sites of critical discourses and the porous boundaries of their methods. They are concerned with the material effects of the imperial and colonial logics that have fashioned Canada, as well as with the paradoxes, ironies, and contortions that abound in the general perception that Canada has progressed beyond its colonial construction. Smaro Kamboureli’s introduction demonstrates that these essays engage with the larger realm of human and social practices—throne speeches, book clubs, policies of accommodation of cultural and religious differences, Indigenous thought about justice and ethics—to show that literary and critical work is inextricably related to the Canadian polity in light of transnational and global forces.

Part I: Academic Reading introduces students to the conventions of academic discourse and to critical thinking. Part II: Academic Writing begins with an overview of college/university essays and then discusses reports, critical analyses, summaries, and research essays. Part III: The Active Reader features thirty-nine diverse and cross-disciplinary readings that are organized into five thematic sections. Features * The essays--most of which are less than five years old--have been chosen specifically for their currency and relevance to students' lives. * Suggested activities for the individual essays will initiate class discussions and encourage students to work collaboratively as well as individually. * Diverse and cross-disciplinary, the readings focus on problems and/or solutions applicable to today's world. * A variety of rhetorical patterns are illustrated within a problem-solving framework, enabling instructors to use a more traditional rhetorical approach if they choose. * In "The Active Voice" features--which speak directly to students--experts offer their perspectives on particular issues or writing points. * The rhetoric and handbook section is integrated with the essay section, thus reinforcing all the principles outlined in the first two sections as students work through the essays.

Book excerpt: Racial profiling and border security have become characteristic features of governance in Western liberal democracies during the twenty-first century. This new collection provides an important multi-national perspective on an issue of great and growing concern, particularly but not exclusively in the context of corporate globalization and neo-liberal governance. Despite the growing significance of regimes of racial profiling, surveillance and tightened border controls in the post-9/11 period, there have been very few extended analyses of racial profiling in different eras and contexts, particularly at borders. The work examines the issue from a transborder perspective, with comparisons, connections and intersections of policy and practice. Chapters examine a range of topics including racial profiling and implications for inter/national and human security, racial profiling along borders in the US and the construction of "terrorists" and "illegal aliens," racial profiling and problems of proof and movements opposing racial profiling, among others. Overall, the chapters in this collection reframe racial profiling as a human rights rather than civil rights issue, making an important contribution to analyses of this important topic. About the editor: Jeff Shantz teaches critical theory, elite deviance, community and human rights in the Department of Criminology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Metro Vancouver, Canada. He is the author of the book Living Anarchy: Theory and Practice in Anarchist Movements. His writings have appeared in leading international journals including Critical Sociology, Critique of Anthropology, Feminist Review and New Politics as well as numerous anthologies. A longtime community organizer, he has been a member of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty and host of the weekly "Anti-Poverty Report" on radio stations CHRY and CKLN in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Shantz received his Ph.D. from York University in Toronto.

Book excerpt: Over the past thirty years, political scientist Alan Cairns has become recognized as perhaps the leading authority on the evolving Canadian constitution and its relationship to government actors (political leaders, the judiciary, the bureaucracy) and to ordinary citizens. In this third volumeof his essays, Cairns examines how Canada and Canadians have changed in recent years and why this change has been both traumatic and halting. As he writes in the Introduction, "In nearly every essay, the past is a brooding visitor, shaping the issues we confront, influencing the criteria andprocessess by which we respond, defining the communities that struggle for constitutional living space, or surviving as memories in the minds of the constitutional participants." And those participants have changed greatly in less than a generation from the eleven male political leaders of executivefederalism to include women, Aboriginals, the disabled, "third-force" ethnic Canadians, and yet others, such as gays and lesbians, who are knocking on the doors of the state for constitutional recognition. Divided into six parts - "The Past, Present, and Future of the Canadian State," "Where WeHave Come From," "The New Constitutional Culture," "Citizenship and the Constitution," "Constitutional Reform," and "The Constitutional Future" - the thirteen essays in Reconfigurations, while never veering too far away from the tremendous impact of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and of the tworecent failures at constitutional renewal (Meech Lake and Charlottetown), consider how constitutional change has affected and not affected the embedded state and its burgeoning bureaucracy, Aboriginal Canadians, third-force Canadians, and our political leaders. Also prominent in these extendeddiscussions is the inescapable fact of the English and French "founding peoples," and in the concluding chapter, written expecially for this volume, Cairns looks at Canada's constitutional future through the lens of the September, 1994, Quebec provincial election.
