If one feels that he is occasionally ineffectual, because he was groping for a literary form which his youth had not yet achieved, one is never unaware of the charm with which his groping naturally invests itself. And so, if it served no other purpose, this collection of reviews by a youthful fellow-craftsman, now among the august dead, might, if studied seriously by re viewers of to-day in America, tend to revive a well-nigh extinct art; for these papers, whatever their faults, are the expression of an alert spirit, a discriminating intelligence, ardently devoting it self with rare singleness of purpose to a service the rewarding beauty of which it never doubts. Yet, after all, the chief function which this collec tion will perform, and one most welcomed by James's own faithful circle of readers, is that of self-portraiture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Reviews: Selected and Edited With Introductory Notes Though probably there is no form of literature more widely practised, and less organised, than the review, it would be safe to say that every example stands somewhere between a critical essay and a publisher's advertisement. We need not, however, consider here the many influences which may corrupt newspaper criticism to-day, nor concern ourselves with those legitimate notices of books which only aim at telling the story or otherwise offering guidance for an order from the library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reviews, Essays and Other Writings, Vol. 1: With Introduction and Notes The Pipe Roll Society has so far printed Nos. 1, 3, 4, and there are good reasons for attributing all the fifteen to this reign or to the first year Of John. Palgrave apparently printed those which were exactly dated in the R011 itself. But N O. 1 is Obviously, Of the date given, containing the earlier stages Of suits which continue in N O. 2; and the others may be plausibly dated by means of names and suits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Poems and Reviews Certain poems of mine, it appears, have been impugned by judges, with or without a name, as indecent or as blasphemous. To me, as I have intimated, their verdict is a matter of infinite indifference: it is of equally small moment to me whether in such eyes as theirs I appear moral or immoral, Christian or pagan. But, remembering that science must not scorn to investigate animalcules and infusoria, I am ready for once to play the anatomist. Instead of in December may now be said to be established. The valuable reviews in the monthly periodicals do not, however, all appear in time to be included even under this new arrangement. Where additional criticisms of 1915 books are deemed of' sufficient importance, they will be entered in the 1916 Digest. This year has seen a change in the editorial staff. Miss Clara E. Fanning, under whose editorship the Digest has been published since 1905, left in September to take a position in the Minneapolis Public Library, and Miss Margaret Jackson, formerly with The Century Company and the New York Public Library, assumed editorial charge at that date. The descriptive notes for September were written by Justina Leavitt Wilson, who has also contributed occasional notes to other numbers during the year. The Dewey classification numbers, a new feature of the 1915 Digest, have been assigned by Miss Corinne Bacon, editor of the forthcoming Standard Catalog. Miss Bacon is one of the advisory committee appointed by the with the cordial approval of Mr. Dewey, to' make recommendations for the expansion of the Dewey classification. The Digest and the Standard Catalog will, therefore, have the benefit of the recommendations of this advisory boar d.
