Book excerpt: This collection of original essays comprises an international who's who of women theologians writing on a topic that impacts the lives of women everywhere. In December 1994, forty-five outstanding feminist theologians from around the world met in Costa Rica to discuss the impact of violence against women. For a full week these theologians dialogued on the many forms of violence: economic, military, cultural, ecological, domestic, and physical violence. From this multivoice dialogue, 'Women Resisting Violence' offers a truly global, truly cutting-edge resource on the implications of violence against women.

Book excerpt: A forceful, scholarly call to return to the solid ground of the ancient creeds of Christianity. Dr. Montgomery's incisive observations on Barth, Bultmann, Tillich, de Chardin, Pike and others may rankle some readers on occasion. But there can never be any question about the mental acumen he brings to bear upon his subject or the skill with which he pens his views. Montgomery is so obviously at home in the area of the theological, and so conversant with the convictions of his fellow theologians that he certainly must be reckoned with. Not content with only analyzing the suicide of theology, the author also gives a proposal for its resurrection.

Book excerpt: "A magical novel on the theme of androgyny. Funny, subtle, poignant..." - Nadine Sautel, Magazine littéraire "Jacqueline Harpman drags us into one of those sexual phantasmagorias that are her own secret. She displays incredible confidence in juggling identities and meshing together yearnings and phobias, fantasies and frustrations" - T G, L'Express How would it be to jump into the skin of another? To be both a man and a woman at once? And what would happen if you found yourself attracted to yourself? Beneath a mousy exterior, 35-year-old college lecturer Aline seethes with frustration. Sick of being bullied by her mother and treated like a piece of furniture by Albert, her live-in lover, one day Aline leaps from her own skin into the far more attractive body of Lucien, whom she spots in a café at the Gare du Nord. From here this brilliantly imaginative story runs on parallel lines. While Aline sensibly catches the train back to her orderly life, Aline-Lucien - or Orlanda, as her bold new composite self is called in homage to Virginia Woolf - follows, dragging chaos in his wake. Jacqueline Harpman, herself once a psychoanalyst, revels in the confusion, as ego falls for alter ego and mothers, sisters and lovers begin to ask awkward questions in this unusual perceptive comedy of double selves and bisexuality. "Undoubtedly this is a novel to breathe life into characters through the unfettered use of the imagination. It offers a pretext for a great deal of humour and fantasy that stirs up the old myths' - André Brincourt, Figaro Winner of the Prix Médicis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a continuation of the development of thought begun by the author in his Creation and Law, published in 1961. Together the two books cover most of the great themes usually considered in a work of dogmatics. Though this book is not organized and written as a dogmatics in the formal sense, the author treats in it the major doctrines of the Christian faith: the relation of law and gospel, the two natures of Christ, sin, grace, sacraments, the Word of God, etc. Running through and informing the discussion of these and other doctrines is one major theme: the relation between creation and redemption. Taking his cue from Irenaeus, Wingren defines this relation in a variety of ways. Because he takes the relation between creation and redemption so seriously, Old Testament Prehistory comes to its own. The first article of the Creed is more than that the stress on the humanity of Christ rules out all docetism: the church is understood as the body of Christ fulfilling its mission through preaching, and the parousia is not merely the end but the fulfillment of creation. In the final analysis, however, Wingren's dogmatics has an ethical thrust of profound significance for our understanding of living a Christian life in our workaday world. His careful analysis of the relation between creation and redemption, as epitomized for the Christian in baptism, prevents an unambiguous affirmation of the church as completely redemptive, or of creation as wholly good or wholly evil. The eschatological dimension of life - life lived between the beginning and the end - becomes a dominant feature of the Christian's posture in the world until Christ is all in all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this hard-hitting book, Richard V. Pierard examines the growing affinity between evangelical Christianity and political and economic conservatism that was occurring in the 1960s, and eloquently appeals for a dissolution of these unwarranted ties. The Christian faith stresses love for one's neighbor, selflessness, humility, and peacemaking, virtues which are at variance with the practices of the right. Pierard's critique of the linkage of Christianity with American nationalism, militarism, and capitalism is as relevant today as it was 35 years ago. By bringing this unfortunate situation into the open, he hopes to encourage evangelical leaders to break this unequal yoke and unleash the spiritual forces of American evangelicalism for meaningful participation in the growth of world Christianity.
