L'auteur, qui a étudié les archives notariales durant plusieurs décennies, a tenté d'évaluer cette influence en longue perspective historique depuis l'apparition du notariat public en France. Il a dégagé les tendances permanentes du notariat jusqu'à nos jours dans la recherche de la protection des intérêts des parties. Il a montré particulièrement que le notariat s'est donné, surtout depuis un demi-siècle, les moyens de perfectionner la formation juridique de ses membres, de maîtriser rapidement l'inflation des textes législatifs et d'y adapter le formulaire, enfin d'intervenir auprès des gouvernants et du Législateur pour répondre aux besoins créés par les profonds bouleversements sociaux.
