Book excerpt: "Not Another Second" tells the stories of 12 LGBT+ seniors. It details the years they lost to societal constraints, years where they were not able to be their authentic selves or openly express their love. It also tells of the triumphs they experienced over these constraints. This book acknowledges and celebrates the sacrifices, bravery and contributions of these seniors and offers wisdom to future generations in the hopes that not one person will lose another second. LGBT+ seniors born in the 1930s, '40s and '50s are the brave pioneers who stood up and pushed back, refusing to be treated as social outcasts, criminals and sinners or seen as mentally ill. Their living legacy includes hard-won federal rights for LGBT+ members to legally marry, adopt, work and seek housing and health care without discrimination. Now in their sixties, seventies and eighties, the 3 million LGBT+ seniors currently living in the United States want subsequent generations to learn from their living history, to be inspired to stand on their shoulders and to continue to fight for what's right. A collaboration between the trailblazing nonprofit SAGE and Watermark Retirement Communities, this book gives readers a candid glimpse into the private and public lives of Pearl, Nick, Mark, Paul, Paulette, Pat, Lujira, Ellie, Reverend Kennedy, Ronnie, Ray and Richard. They are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Their generation led the Stonewall Uprising, founded Act Up and helped end "don't ask, don't tell." These seniors are presented through a series of more than 100 portraits interspersed with stories of their experiences as members of the LGBT+ community. Each moving portrait, captured by noted German photographer Karsten Thormaehlen, is accompanied by the number of years lost, years when they could not live as their true self beyond their inner circle of trusted friends and family. All proceeds collected from the sale of this book will be donated to Watermark for Kids, a nonprofit organization, in support of LGBT+ young people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why on earth would two history nerds use their own free time to write another US history textbook? Well, that, intelligent human, is the right question. This work breaks from the traditional memorization of who, what, when, where, and focuses on why and how. The former is popular in schools due to its efficiency in quantification for testing. You're either right or wrong about remembering facts. But it's so boring that most students turn off their brains once they set foot in the class, and that habit continues well into old age, if not recognized and corrected. Why and how are more subjective, therefore harder to grade. But with their asking, people become re-centered in our collective story, where they belong. Only then can proper context be understood, and criticism and perspective be applied. We believe this approach to be the missing link in our education and understanding of current issues, norms, and discussion points. Hopefully, after reading this work, each reader's critical thinking will activate around all history permanently. That will certainly aid humanity's evolution and communication. Wait, does that mean this book can be categorized as self-help? Argue away!

Book excerpt: Considered a poor but blessed family, I remember living in a one bedroom house with no bathroom and no running water, in a small town called White Plains in Alabama; later we moved to Valley, Alabama. As a teenager I began lip syncing and participating in a number of skits at the skating rink and disco clubs. After being converted from worldliness to righteousness and transformed by the renewing of my mind, I no longer thought or saw things the same. I realized that writing songs, poems and performing arts were gifts from God. Once I gave the gifts that God had given me back to Him and allowed Him to use me for His glory and not mine, I saw how God began to give me more of His wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of how to minister to His people according to what I’d been through and the words of my testimony. My constant prayer every day is, “if you can use anything Lord, you can use me”.

Book excerpt: The sexy Doms from the Prairie Winds Club are back; and so are their sassy, trouble magnet subs! The 8th book in Avery Gale’s wildly popular Masters of the Prairie Winds Club series is full of humor and unexpected turns. Oh…and Lilly West has a new shotgun…what could possibly go wrong? *** Guinevere Colbert-Lister’s blood is as blue as her sparkling eyes, but she’s never been interested in her role as a debutante. Her interest in mechanics and sports car racing is a constant point of contention between Guinevere and her parents. When she accepts a last-minute invitation to fill in for a mechanic at a local race track, her life is forever changed. Forced into witness protection when she helps free a group being held for sex slave auction in London, Guinevere is reborn as Colbie Clark. She finds herself under the protection of the Prairie Winds team in Texas, but Colbie has never been able to stop thinking about two MI6 agents who whisked her from the local police station in London, interrogated her before escorting her to their headquarters, and then walked away without ever looking back. Agents James and Ford stormed in, and then out of her life within a few hours…but they still haunt her dreams and fuel all of her sexual fantasies. *** Walking away from Colbie was the hardest thing either Liam or Bode had ever done. They’re on Kent and Kyle West’s Prairie Winds team now, and they’ve spent the past year watching and waiting to bring her into their lives. But, Colbie proves herself every bit as challenging as the Wests' feisty wife, Tobi. Liam and Bode’s carefully cultivated plans are tossed aside when it appears the head of the sex trafficking ring bent on making an example of her have finally found their petite target. Can they keep her safe despite her penchant for being in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forty Days of Musa Dagh is Franz Werfel's masterpiece that brought him international acclaim in 1933, drawing the world's attention to the Armenian genocide. This is the story of how the people of several Armenian villages in the mountains along the coast of present-day Turkey and Syria chose not to obey the deportation order of the Turkish government. Instead, they fortified a plateau on the slopes of Musa Dagh"€"Mount Moses"€"and repelled Turkish soldiers and military police during the summer of 1915 while holding out hope for the warships of the Allies to save them. The original English translation by Geoffrey Dunlop has been revised and expanded by translator James Reidel and scholar Violet Lutz. The Dunlop translation, had excised approximately 25% of the original two-volume text to accommodate the Book-of-the-Month club and to streamline the novel for film adaptation. The restoration of these passages and their new translation gives a fuller picture of the extensive inner lives of the characters, especially the hero Gabriel Bagradian, his wife Juliette, their son Stephan"€"and Iskuhi Tomasian, the damaged, nineteen-year-old Armenian woman whom the older Bagradian loves. What is more apparent now is the personal story that Werfel tells, informed by events and people in his own life, a device he often used in his other novels as well, in which the author, his wife Alma, his stepdaughter Manon Gropius, and others in his circle are reinvented. Reidel has also revised the existing translation to free Werfel's stronger usages from Dunlop's softening of meaning, his effective censoring of the novel in order to fit the mores and commercial contingencies of the mid-1930s. In bringing The Forty Days of Musa Dagh back into print and revising the English translation, we aim to make this new Verba Mundi edition more faithful to the book Thomas Mann read "with pleasure and profit" in German.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A woman’s tortured past is reawakened when a twisted murderer strikes close to home in this “original, spellbinding, and horrifying read” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). Kate is a young woman whose mother is dying of cancer. Gillian is an oversexed, hyper-intellectual who looks like Kate—and is sleeping with Kate’s loathsome stepfather. Jonah is Gillian’s odd but devoted stepbrother—who increasingly matches the description of the rampaging serial killer known as the Doll Collector. Though Kate desperately tries to keep herself together and shut out unwelcome memories, snippets of her family legacy keep resurfacing as the Doll Collector’s body count grows. Are the depraved murders connected to her family’s sordid history? And will Kate be able to confront the horrors of her own past before it’s too late to stop the slaughter? A “haunting and wholly engrossing story of uncommon moral complexity, with prose bright and swift as lightning,” Follow Me into the Dark is a complex, dark expression of a deprived heart and an exploration of the desperate lengths children will go to in order to create family in the wake of abuse (Laura van den Berg, author of Find Me).

This basis ought to guarantee the very existence and the validity of metaphysics, while given this science at the same time its formal object and a solid foundation. But if metaphysics is bound up with the study of a universal unity or of the totality of things, and if then, our inquiry ought to be concerned with the whole, how can we determine the choice of a point of departure?
